Got a Couple Hides Back
« on: January 16, 2012, 10:51:36 PM »
We didn't want to spend the money on rugs so we just had them tanned. Turned out pretty cool! I shot the one on the left August 2nd and another on August 7th. My dad shot the one on the right September 2nd.

Sounds like a great way to preserve memories of the hunt and stick to your budget doing so

Mind sharing what it cost to get them done?

I think the look of tanned bear hides look cool, even if the hides aren't really any good they are still worth tanning in my opinion.

They were 150 a piece, but I think you might find them cheaper somewhere.

How much would it have been to turn them into rugs?

Depends on what taxidermist you take it to.  It ranges from around $140- $200 per Linier Foot (nose to base of tail).

I shot a bear with my bow a few years ago.  First bear I have ever walked up to that had serious ground shrinkage.  It was a little chocolate sow about 105 pounds.  I was sitting on a stump and it was standing briadside at about 10 feet.  I would have swore it was a 200 pound bear.  Way to small for a rug, plus I already had two rugs, so I got it tanned and it is very cool looking.  Could have used a large coon form and done a full body mount.  :):):)

That's funny Machias! I've had a few come thru the shop and I refer to them as "toilet seat covers". I had one customer that brought in a cub about 75 lbs and wanted a half lifesize with it's arms out and a wide open mouth. I just laughed and told him to take it somewhere else. He agreed with my reasoning and we settled on a closed mouth standing on a rock. :)
