New pup, need tips for shed hunting training

Like the topic says.....
Girlfriend got a new puppy, im not a dog person, not at all. (dont hate me) The only saving grace for this dog is if I can train it to find sheds, so I am asking members if they have any tips> I have read a few on here, but am searching for a bit more. I will also check google and youtube, but thought any personal tips from the huntwa members would be awesome.

Dog is part lab, part retriever (50 50). Her name is Cabela.

I was just about to post this same topic. I have tought my dog to track (a little) but I want to teach him how to look for sheds as I plan to do a lot of hiking in the future.

I just started playing fetch with a "bone" when my pup was younger, after she knew to retrieve them I starte hiding them in VERY easy to find spots, after that I started making it more and more difficult. I can't say it's been the best method as she is still training but she's doing quite well finding planted ones on my grandpas 6 acre plait of land.

You're on the right track. The next thing you will need to do is buy some rack wash to remove your human scent from the antlers you're hiding and apply some rack wax which puts the natural antler smell back on.

I've also heard that a dog could follow your scent to where you plant them, I usually plant and wait a week. Would that be long enough or should I really wait at all?

I would think that a week should be fine as long as you keep your scent off of the antlers

Your best bet is to de-scent your rubber boots with any scent killer of your choice, de-scent your antlers, re-apply scent to antlers with rack wax and then hide your sheds wearing de-scented rubber gloves. If you do it this way you won't have to wait before you and your pup can get to work in the field.
