Post by: Vo2max on August 11, 2012, 10:35:06 AM
Need some help... Nikon Monarch 10x50 BDC reticle or Leupold VX 3 10x50? Im mounting this on a custom 7mm Mag. Struggling with this decision. Thanks for the help.

I prefer Leupold. I can't seem to get the eye relief right with a Nikon. Every one has a preference, go compare them side by side, and pick the one you like best.

I like the Nikon; I have one on my savage 30-06 had me putting three in a fifty cent piece at 300 yards from the shoulder no rest. I also really liked the redfields.

Every hunting rifle I own except one, has a Leupold sitting on it.  The one that doesnt has a Weaver K4 because it will always be as great grandpa carried it. Good products for the price and they are durable.

Leupold for me....however I have been hearing great things about the vortex and the warrenty is amazing.  Then again Leupolds warrenty is amazing as well, but you will pay more for the leupold.

Nikon ProStaff from Wally World is good.  Nikon has always given me excellent customer service as well whether it be cameras or scopes.

I have several nikons and they are pretty good scopes but I have been buying leupolds for everything the last 5 years or so.  I order them from the custom shop. They can put any reticle you want in there (i like a very fine crosshair, aim small miss small) or they can custom build you a bdc reticle for your gun and load.  Top notch folks over there!

leupold all the way... I once broke a leupold scope (fell on it bear hunting) a week before deer season so i called leupold on monday and sent it overnight my scope was fixed and back in my hands by thursday no charge.. I was amazed i will never have anything other than leupolds on my guns... I own 6 of thier scopes..

I prefer to avoid 50mm objective rifle scopes. Too big. Spend more and get a better quality scope that will collect as much light with less glass.

I'm a fan of both. I went with a Nikon on my last gun and it's been good to me. Leupolds are great and I've got two binos that are almost 30 years old and still working decently for their age. I've heard that Nikon makes the glass for Leupold from a salesman but I'm not positive on that note. Wouldn't surprise me.

Would I be left wanting if I purchased a Redfield (made by Leupold)? I want a 50 rather than the 40 for light gathering capabilities in low light situations so that where I will stand firm. I do not have the coin to drop $1k on a scope as the custom rifle is costing me enough ;). Good optics are key, this I know, but just wanted a few opinions and for them I thank you all.

I recently got a NIKON Monarch. Sent in an old NIKON under warranty and they sent me a new one at no charge. Pleased with their customer service. Just need to get my scope on and put to use.

I would not put a Redfield on an expensive custom rifle. The Nikon Monarch or Leupold should be just fine. I wouldn't go with anything less.

I guess I look at it this way, Leupold and Nikon both make good optics and both have good customer service, but Leupold is made here in the good old USA by American workers. Need you look any further?  :twocents:

Leupold.... Made in USA.... Is a great product.... And really no reason for BDC reticles...... If you can't hit it with a standard scope what's the point of shooting....   :twocents:

In the past I bought Nikon and have loved the higher quality than Leupold with lower price.  Saying this I will never buy either one again.  Vortex is the only way to go.  Optics are just as good or better and price is lower.  But most important is the warrenty.  They will warrenty it for ever no matter what happens to it.  If you where to find a vortex scope, bino's, or rangefinder in the gutter and you took a sledge hammer to it for fun and than returned it to Vortex, they would fix it or give you a new one with no questions asked.  Dont need proof of purchase or be the original owner.  Just try that with the other big names!

Nikon makes Leupolds glass................there you have it.  Fully multi coated versus just multi coated has more to do with light gathering than size of objective lense.

I can shoot and kill with one shot from my 243 at 400+ yards..... With my 7mm Weatherby 700+..... Standard Simmons or Leupold scope..... BDC is a waste of time..... Learn to shoot your weapon and judge distance.....  :twocents:

:) :) I like the Leupold, I have VX3 in 3.5X10X40 and 50 on different rifles, I can see no difference in light gathering, Have compared many times in different conditions. All my hunting rifles run Leupold VX3's. I can drive to the factory in 2 hours. I am not a fan of BDC scopes either. I have some leupolds that I have used for over 40 years.  my 2.

May want to check out Vortex scopes also.  I pciked up a  4 x 12 x 40 for my son at the Sportsman show in Puyallup with a red dot recticle for only $149.  One awesome scope for the price.......My Buddy went back on the last day and picked up the same scope for $119.  Just a thought and same lifetime warranty and Leopold

I keep saying I will buy a nice Vortex for my next gun but I never do.  I have some of their Viper binos and they have been great.

That being said I just really like the VX-3 scopes.  I honestly can't tell the difference once the dollar amount gets up there.

I like dealing with Leupold and feel good about supporting them.

I too LOVE Leopold.  My go too rifle has a 3 x 9 x 40 from about 1970 that is too old for their database.  Fogged up about 2 years ago and sent it back to them.  "No Problem Sir"  got it back and set it back in the rings.  Only had to aadjust 2 clicks up and 3 clicks right.  Dead on!  Just when the kids spent their own money the Vortex was a bit cheaper.
