Good luck on tracking the deer (if inded you shot one) now at dark with the rain. Go ahead and look in the morning, and I hope the antlers are still good, because thats the only thing that will be..Make sure you get a nice warm showerand a good nights sleep  and a real hardy breakfast before you go looking..Damn I just love the infuance these hunting shows have

From the info he is giving you guys I don't see how you can validate to go now, later tonight or tommorrow.... Some situations you are by far better off leaving the animal overnight or at least a couple hours.... I have made the decision to leave animals overnight and almost every time it payed dividend, and was the right thing to do. But it depends on how u feel the hit was and if there's blood that represents a good shot... My 2cents, I'm sure he will do the right thing!
-
It is quite possible the hunter is a young lady. Female for sure so back off a little!

the meat wont go bad overnight. :dunno:

I would at least look around for the arrow or some blood before deciding not to look tonight. If it's raining where you are like it is here you may not find any blood in the morning. Keep us updated, good luck.

On the Decatur island feel free to pay 30$ to get out hear

Thank you I am a GIRL we will look in the morning and I used a sst :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash:

Who cares if the hunter is male or female. Don't take a shot you cant make. I cant stand people that dont know their limits in the woods and then never find the animal they made a poor shot on. I am guessing that she wont find the deer tomorrow or any sign of a wounded deer because the rain will wash everything clean tonight. I guess she should just chalk it up to a good ol' fashion miss!
The bottomline is a hunter should know their limits and not take a shot that they are unsure of.
-
I'm really so glad Hunt Wa is full of all seeing all knowing know it alls. Sometimes, it does not pay to go stomping around at night.
-
OK for one I new I could take the shot so I did it was a big deer and I was 65 yards away I shot it and it took off it was my first deer and I am confident in my shot :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL:
-
Thanks where we r at we should find it soon
-
It just sounds weird to me if it looked like you made a good shot why wouldn't you at least go look for blood... Just sounds like a weird story to me and doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I realize giving an animal some time is needed sometimes but you seem confident in your shot...
SST at 65 yards? The deer shouldnt have went more than 30 yards if you made a good shot. Good luck and I hope you find him in the morning.
-
might try some of the tracking spray that will indicate where blood is. For night tracking, there are small uv flashlights. Maybe even try hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle.

The antlers will taste fine, as will the meat! It was raining hard enough at the time that there would be no blood trail within ten minutes anyways, I would assume you would wait at least ten minutes to look....? If the buck was hit, he's in a 2-3 acre woods where they have permission to go. If pushed, he could run into a 20 acre wooded area where there is no access, even for a wounded animal.
As far as it looking like this...
This is the real hunting world! Not tv!!!!!!! If it was hit good then go get it! If you don't this is what it could look like in the morning!
You obviously know nothing about where this young lady is hunting. Unless a batalion of raccoons and mink descend on it in the dark, it will be just fine in the morning as there are no bears, coyotes, wolves or cougar here.
The gun/scope is plenty accurate, the shooter was steady and on sticks. If she hit where she thinks she did, he'll be there in the morning. If it was a bit back, then... he'll be there in the morning.
So, unless you have something encouraging or constructive to add, STFU. Thanks to those supporting this young hunter.

I shot a buck 3 years ago, same gun, same bullets, double lunged and that deer ran 123 yards, paced off, so not sure you know what you are talking about.
-
my shot on my buck this year was less than perfect unfortunately, and if i didnt go out at night to track him i doubt i ever would have found him. head lamp, get on the trail, if hes dying slow and you bump him then back off until morning, but at least take a look tonight and get an idea what happened?
-
This is a kid, and she probably isnt calling the shots, maybe we should secure our arm chairs and give her a break.

gOOD LUCK bUGABOO25............Sorry...I had cap lock on. :chuckle:

:yeah: Get out their, and bump him into someone's yard or further from where she shot
-
yeah i actually did bump him onto other property, at which time i called the landowner to get permission, then waited until morning to recover him. still fact remains if i didnt find his trail that night and know where he went i never would have found him im certain
-
thanks gearhead, i didnt post my comment...
repeat after me: MOM AND DAD, GET UP!! LETS GO FIND MY DEER!!
-
Deer can take a good hit and go a long way. I have shot the heart out of a couple and they can make it over 100 yards before they lose enough blood pressure to go down. This year i shot a doe in the heart with a 444 marlin with a 270 grain speer golddot and it went 130 yards. Best of luck finding your deer in the morning the meat will be fine.

thank you GEARHEAD. I don't like it when people get all up on there high horses it is raining hard hear and my dad and lokidog are calling the shoTS
-
goodluck to you! looking forward to the pics!

Good luck with that on this site. ;)
bugaboo25, I hope you find your deer and post pics

I will find it and thanks too all who support me to those who don't **

Lokidog,
I bet I have killed more deer than you, so maybe you should re-read my post and take the time to comprehend others posts before responding.
If you double lung a deer at 65 yards, with an SST in any caliber gun, then there is no reason the deer should have went over 30 yards. I'm not saying that he might have not went further, but it's likely that he didn't go that far from were she shot him. I think that the young lady, presumably your daughter due to your defensive nature, will find the buck in the morning. Her original post was pretty vague and as more information has came out, I think that she made a good ethical kill shot.
Me personally, I would have went and got him tonight and not worried about bumping him if I was confident in my shot. Post some pictures after you guys find him in the morning!

Umm...I helped track a deer that my brother-in-law shot directly in the brain. That thing went 1/2 a mile, and yes, it was directly in the brain! We almost had no blood to track it at all.......luckily there was snow
-
I guess I have to apologize for calling you a young man! Sorry! Everything else I said is a fact!!
-
I personally never left an animal in the woods over night :dunno: If you could not find any sign of blood then I may understand but I think I would be looking as we speak ! :twocents: :yeah:

That is very plausible, but a deer isn't going a half mile after being double lunged....even if you do bump him. May I have been lucky, but I have never had to track any of my animals over 100 yards. I have helped several others track animals over 100 yards, but all were less than stellar shots.
Again, I think she will find the deer early in the morning and not far from where she took the shot based on the information that was posted in the later posts.

You are the SST god I guess, do you work for the company that makes these? Sounds like exaggerated advertising to me? Come on out and I'll show you where the buck was standing and where he died....
So, how many deer have you shot? You know nothing about me, probably can't even figure out how old I am on my profile. I'd be willing to bet some money that I've shot more deer than you have in the past 6 years. I'm 9 for six years in WA, how about you??
What part of bumping him into a huge NON-ACCESSIBLE area didn't you get?
-
Don't overlook the crows when you look for it--if you see them sitting in a tree and then dropping down or hear a lot of squaking--sometimes they will help you out. Good luck.
-
Would love to see some pics and a story once you find him. Good luck out there.
Just listen to your dad and respect his decision. That's way more important in than the advise from strangers on the internet. :twocents: ...Just realized what an oximoron that was. Forget it. Good luck finding your deer. :chuckle:

Just stating a fact. I don't appreciate a guy telling me that I don't know what I'm talking about, when it seems that he is the one that truly doesn't have a clue. I have spent a lot of time in the woods in this state as well as many other states, so I do know what I am talking about.
Sure a deer can get double lunged and go 123 yards. I would bet that there are 10 deer that are double lunged that go less than 30 yards for every double lunged deer that goes 123 yards. If he would have actually taken the time to comprehend my post, he would understand that I was suggesting that a SST at 65 yards = dead dear!

Not quite sure I see where that was said, I indicated that they can indeed run farther than 30 yards with a well placed double lung SST. It wasn't until later when you challenged my personal score card that I stepped it up. BTW, you still haven't said how many you have gotten in the last six years.... Girl scouts and tree huggers "spend a lot of time in the woods" as well but it doesn't mean they know it all or much for that matter. :dunno: :chuckle:

Just a thought. My wife shot her first deer with a .243 using Remington Core lock ammo (I think 100 grain). It was broad side at 70 yards and she hammered it behind the shoulders a little high. I had the bino's on it and saw the tuft of hair on impact. It buckled and then walked off. We were in Eastern Washington in the wide open, so we climbed a small rock bluff and watched the deer just walk away. I figured 50 yards and it was dead. Well at 200 yards I told her to shoot it again. Needless to say she was pretty flustered and missed. I watched that deer walk till I couldn't see it anymore. I ranged the rock it walked behind and it was just shy of 500 yards. After we got assistance I marked that rock and walked over to and we found the deer dead 50 yards beyond it. I guess 550-600 yards that deer walked with a double lung shot that was just above the halfway mark on the body. Gutting it confirmed the shot placement. It also confirmed the bullet did not expand properly as the exit wound was smaller than it should have been.
Needless to say, even a perfect double lung shot means nothing sometimes. I am all for waiting til the next morning if you don't know. Why push a deer in the dark, especially this time of year where it is plenty cool enough to not damage the meat.
Good Luck Guys...and Gals.

Thanks, I think most people have had at least one double lunged deer go more than 30 yards. :dunno: I've seen two deer missing large chunks of their hearts go over 100 yards as well.

Yes, about two and a half weeks ago. Shot at 40 yds with a .338 with over 5,000 ft-lbs; through both lungs and it ran a little over 50 yds.

hey bugaboo when you get a pic of your deer dont post it on this mess of a poop storm, start a new thread, cant wait to see it

My very first deer that I shot was on a doe with 180 grain core-lokts 30-06. I shot it, and it put out both its front legs, and that tough sucker ran 50-60 yards with NO front legs (it ran with its head, neck, and chest in the dirt) :yike: When I gutted it, the heart was totally wasted.

Good not to push the deer. You and loki will find him in the morning. Cant wait to see pic.

Good luck Bug.

Hoping to see some pics by now! Come on, where are they?
Good luck finding the deer. Hope no meat is wasted.

I'm sorry and don't mean to offend anyone but it doesn't take an expert to figure out heavy rain will wipe out any blood trail if left over night. Hope they found the deer and I hope the meat was still good.
-
I just hope for the sake of the animal and the young girl that they were able to find it and salvage the meat. Just sounded like a goofy story to me, sorry if some of you feel I may have helped to ruin her experience.
-
I am not sure anyone intended to ruin anyone hunting experience, especially a young hunter. I do however believe that this sight has gotten a little out of control with such strong personalities and just down right rude comments. If you want to state your opinion take a step back and think about HOW you are stating that opinion before you hit POST. You can just about say anything and if constructively written not have be offensive.
Two things to remember:
1. You were not there and don't know all the circumstances: Post your opinion, but remember unless you are / were there your opinion is based off your experiences and not others. Just because you experienced something at some point in your life doesn't make it right for every circumstance that other face. Like I tell the people I work with and train, "there is 1000 ways to skin a cat; and 999 of them are correct ways."
2. I've been teaching my 5 year old daughter this one. The GOLDEN RULE; if you don't want to be treated or talked to a certain way, then don't do it to others. I notice a lot of you want to dish out the criticism, but when someone else criticized you you get offended. Guess what....the is the GOLDEN RULE and KARMA at work.
Please be nice or for heavens sake, don't post at all.
Sorry for the rant, but I like others have noticed this site going down hill lately.
Johnny

this person needs to remember how many perfect people are on here and never make a bad shot....every deer they have ever shot falls in its tracks because they are perfect ok! next time you go hunting you need to take lessons on how to be perfect from some of the perfect people on here

Johnny
I agree with you and that is the very reason I decided to quit posting or debating this topic with other members. I truly hope the young lady was able to find her buck this morning because I think losing an animal would be more devastating to young hunter.

I am a new member and posted a story with pictures., everything went good with my hunt so I didn't receive any negative feed back. After reading this and many other posts I am not sure I want to be a member of this site. I guess nobody else has ever had less than perfect hunting experience.

I really think this election has got guys testy ! It's very easy to arm chair hunt . the reallity is the rain sucks and can make desissions tough.

this person needs to remember how many perfect people are on here and never make a bad shot....every deer they have ever shot falls in its tracks because they are perfect ok! next time you go hunting you need to take lessons on how to be perfect from some of the perfect people on here
Wouldn't matter anyway, even if it was the perfect shot and died right there. Half of them would snivel about the bullet and what he was wearing. :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

So, we found no deer. :( Four of us grid searched the area for quite a while. The hunter's dad felt like it did not act like it was hit so decided to wait in case it was a bad hit. Possibly the hunter pulled the shot in her excitement. She feels bad about having maybe wounded and not recovered it and will probably use this experience as a learning one.
So for those of you that were supportive, thank you, for some others, whatever, and for those that might be pursuaded not to post something that is not perfect or a question they have that might make them look bad, please don't give up on this site as there are a lot of good people here that are willing to offer constructive and helpful advice.
Any other details on this will be left to the young hunter to add.

Have they shot the gun since to see if it's even close? 65yards with a rest and a clean miss. :dunno:

Thanks for the update. Hopefully the end result of this thread will be less "dog piling".

The gun was shot on Friday and the two shots were w/in an inch and a half on either side of the bullseye at 50 yards, so should have been on. :dunno:

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully it was a
Clean miss. I have missed plenty of animals, hence my name. Good lessons learned on every animal.

Don't take it too hard Bug. I bet I've taken way more deer than even cem3434 :chuckle: and I've missed several at that range or less. It happens.
