Thought I'd post up some misc. trapping pics. We have received a ton of good advice from a lot of HW members so I feel it is only fair to share our success.

Here's an interesting pic of a coho I caught above a beaver dam. I had the cage stuffed in a rat hole and came up with this! :dunno:
-
Couple more. I'll add more as I get them.
-
That fish is cool! Also how did you get the Skunk out? Hope no one got sprayed!
-
Nice work!
-
WOW ...good job nails ...glad to see the kids love doing it too ....thats awesome
-
Yep brings back memories  Did you catch the beaver in the cage traps too?
-
Nice!!!!!!!
-

Well, we heard that if you put a tarp over them they won't spray. We waited 'til dark, snuck up on him with the tarp, and he sprayed under it. :puke:
-

Yes, under water swim throughs. We haven't been doing too well at taking pics with them in the cages. Too excited I guess. :chuckle:
-
Awesome photos, I love looking at trapping photos, thanks for posting all the photos, congrats on your catches.

Thanks Nails. Nice to see someone grinning, instead of grimacing, while packing out a beaver.
-
Awesome photos, love the ones with the kids!!! You ARE the man!!
-
Great work. Looks like your having a great time. Nice to see the mink. Keep up the great work. Thanks

Nicely done! I was wondering if we were going to see more pics.

SA WEEEEEET !! Looks like that boy of yours is growing fast ... :dunno: :chuckle:
-
Put up the cam on this hole to see who calls it home. Still not sure. :chuckle:
-
One of these days I'll take the time to set the date and clock on my cams.
-
Cool pics nails

Interesting day resetting my muskrat colony traps. I feel along the egdes of the creeks for the holes leading to their dens. Once I find a depression I reach as far as I can in to see if the holes turn upward. If they do I then cram a cage in the hole. Well today in two different holes rats attacked my hand while stuffed up in there! I'm here to tell you it was a little creepy. However, I carpet bombed the area with cages and can't wait to check them in two days!
-
Why Don't you just noodle for em! :chuckle:
-
These threads are awesome! Thanks for keeping us updated and keep up the good work!

THANK YOU. Great post, Just the tip I needed. I bet THAT will work where I trap. Does that work for beaver too?
-
That's awesome! I think you have proved if done right cage traps can be productive. I may have to get into trapping again.

I bet it would be a slam dunk to find the exit hole on a beaver lodge but there ain't no way I'm "noodling" for beaver! :chuckle:
-
First 2 pics are of the 7th beaver we've trapped out of the same pond. This was a 46 lber to go with a 59, 55, 50, and 45 lbers. Lots of bigguns! The last pic is of the hole where the trail cam was set up from the posts earlier. We'll see if this works.
-
Awesome!! Come on man you could get your own TV show or reality show if you noodle those beaver!!! :):)
-
Keep 'em coming! Love these threads!
-
Having grown up noodl'in for big catfish, I have some personal experience with accidentally running in to beaver and have the scars to prove it. I would strongly suggest not intentionally catching beaver by hand! LOL
Great thread 3nails!
Doug

These pics are awesome! keep them coming!
-
Great job keep them coming!!!!
-
LOOKS GOOD...
-
Boy this set location has been deadly! 2 more from here this weekend, one being a 65 pounder! The one in the pic. I'll post up a better one later.

-
Thanks for posting your photos, I love reading these trapping topics.

:yeah:

man that things a hog right on on.....
-
That toad, nice catch!
-
Cruddy night pics but best I can do before I skin it. 65 pound beaver from Sunday.
-
Thats pretty cool 3 nails.
-
wow Those beaver must have been enjoying the trapping ban all this time. Where they bitten up much? Looks like the Comstock works well for you. Have you been setting them so the doors close upward...do you think thats better for some reason.
Thanks Darryl
-
I can't say enough good about the Comstock. I set them doors down for the lower profile. (yes, upward) They pack real well for the size also. I've only had one beaver with bites this year but last year seemed real bad. Maybe it gets worse towards spring?
-
The trap line is always interesting. I had a couple more mink, a beaver and 6 muskrats. In my colony traps, of which I had out only 6, I had a mink, (Dark pic) 6 rats, and two large trout! Where my son is standing the cage is at his feet and that is the trap that had a rat and the trout in it. Weird!
-
If I want to find out if a crick or ditch holds rats I'll see if I can find a culvert and set a test trap on the down stream side. Put this cage in and had 2 so I put out more today.
-
I've caught 4 of those nice trout this year in small streams. Never had anything with them though. Last one I caught was about a week ago. Looked to be about 18" long.

I'll have to admit, dinner did cross my mind. But alas, I let them go. :'(
-
3 nails that wider colony trap does it have 1 door on each end or two and how wide is it? I am going to make more this summer and thinking i need some wider ones. Great job on the mink!!!!
-
This trap is 16" wide 8" tall and 24" long. The door openings (4) are 8"w x 6" tall. There is a center divider on each end that is 8" x 8". These are my most productive colony traps. I'm thinking of making some a door set wider (24" instead of 16") for bigger culvert sets. I hate the fact I had this one at the house and not in the water! :chuckle:
-
Top view.
-
3 nails thanks for the info!! I am going to make some more this summer!!!
-
love the pic! Great way to spend some time with the family!
-
2 more large trout in 1 colony trap today! Wish it was fishing season. :chuckle:
-
Finally hit our first otter of the year. Hopefully more tomorrow.
-
3nails looks like another great day with the family!!!
-
Nails ...You guys are having way to much fun ...I may need to take that class if I decide to stay in Washington ...A buddy of mine has caught 6 Bobcat in the last 2 weeks ... I was thinking about going out tonight and doing some calling ...Those trout just blow me away :yike:
-
are those nutria's in the pic with the otter?
-
seth30,
the one on the far left is a mink the rest are muskrats!!
-
Thanks
-
A nice mixed bag today. The minks just keep getting bigger!
-
3 nails
u check out the beav spot I want you to hit?
-
Not yet.
-
Some of the runs I want to set the colony traps in are a bit deep so I made and set this one today. I'm hoping when they go to dive that they will hit the ramp and it'll guide them in.
-
Get hot or I will lay in wait for them and give em the bizness with the firearm and let em sink.Number is in book, ferndale number,I will meet and show you what I'm talking about

I know where. Don't give them the "bizness"! :bdid:
-
Well I checked that trap this morning that I made last night. 3 rats and a kit beaver! I'm going to make up a couple more and set them too. Liking the ramp.
-
You're doing pretty good on the rats and mink. I've just about give up on the water sets for the year. I've just a couple left out. Turned a small cat loose today. My Dad said I'm going soft. :chuckle:
-
I'm enjoying watching your success....
-
wow you are doing well 3 nails. The colonies are working well for me too. Where are you located ?
-
Good job nails ... Hey my brother in Pa finally caught his 1st beaver ...I want to post it on your thread to show ya .. Hope you do not mind ...Looks like a big in ! :dunno: :chuckle:
-
That's a lot of animals you got there!!! Nice work.
On a side note, what do you with all of them? Sell them I presume. Do they bring in good money?
-
A good friend was over from Idaho doing a job interview this weekend and was able to join me on a trap run this morning. The Lord blessed us this a.m. and we still have more to check.
-
Those beavers look huge.
-
Those beavers look huge.
The one on the left weighed 62 lbs. Didn't weigh the other but he was 50+.
-
Those beavers are big enough to wear tavern jackets!
-
hey ...if anyone knows when they are having a class to get a trapping license let me know !! I have to be doing this next season ...give them another thing to chase me around with ...hahaha GOOD JOB NAILS

For sure there will be a class at our Rendezvous in July. Nothing else scheduled at this time.

Especially for otters in your area!
-
Another interesting surprise on the trap line this week. This is one of my most productive mink cages. It wreaks of mink. Twice this week while baited with a skinned out rat I've caught a muskrat in it. With it smelling so bad like mink and baited with a muskrat, I find this odd.
-
Muskrats are attracted to muskrat meat. Always been that way.
-
yep set a few cages specifically for rats a couple weeks ago with rat carcass. Put the cage in a beaver dig out hole right at the water creek caught two rats in one check with four traps. the ones in the marsh did not work for me probably because I picked them off in colonies before they could get caught. Going east again this week to visit daughter and will try a few traps..very few but want to try a float set at this time of year.
-
HEY Nails ...I sure hope you are using those beaver for bobcat bait ..... A friend of mine has been catching alot of bobcat in the last couple months ...thats why I have to be trapping next fall ...He has been making his own cages and they are working awesome ....
-

I learn something every day on the line.
-
Colony traps will catch anything! Todays odd catch..... a bullfrog. Jase Robertson would be jealous. :chuckle: Forgot to take a pic. I did video it and it will be on the trapping video I made throughout the year. I'm hoping to post the vids in a couple of months.
-
Yea, I had a grouse sitting in one of my bobcat sets the other day. I guess he figured I didn't have enough bait. :chuckle: Had a heck of a time getting it to leave also. Opened the door, wouldn't leave. Tipped the trap up and it hung on for dear life. Finally had to reach in and pick it up and set it outside the trap. What did it do? It runs back in the trap. Finally had to pack it down the road a way to release it.
-
You may be a stronger man than me, Bruce. I don't know if I could have passed up such a delicious by catch.
-

It got me thinking and I dug around in the freezer that night. Next day I made grouse noodle soup, better then Campbells soup.
-
Great thread. Love all the great pics. Thanks for sharing.
-
Another big beaver in one of DeKalbs' double guillotine power door traps. I had this trap set to catch a beaver going downstream under a log. Pretty impressive that the doors would close fast enough.
-
Wow that's cool I was leery of that type of door but obviously its a killer....what a hog
-
The power doors are the only way to go. I've only caught four beaver so far all in kirk's Large Double Door. Great design these are two that I caught back to back. Been slow hard to find places to set close to home. Have to scout further out next year.
-
3nails i tried to send you a pm but your inbox is full.

Wow, you are having a great season. Do you make your own colony traps?
-
Wow, you are having a great season. Do you make your own colony traps?
Yes, they are very easy and inexpensive to make.

Thanks, when I get back stateside I plan on making a few traps

What a great day today! Slept in until eight. Made the family my usual Sunday French toast breakfast. Went to church. Went to the boys baseball practice. Checked traps on the way home and had 2 mink and 2 beavs with only 5 traps out. Praise the Lord! Now for a good supper......
-
What a great season! Congrats on another great day.
-
Finally picked up another big otter tonight!
-
Another beav from the weekend.
-
bet it was fun to skin and flesh that old warrior :chuckle:
-
very nice how big are those traps they look huge?
-

To be real, I'm getting fairly sick of skinning and fleshing ANY beaver. :chuckle:
very nice how big are those traps they look huge?
I believe they are 12x18x40. Great trap made by Jim Comstock.
-
Comstock promotes the trap as a live cage. Have you caught very many on land or in shallow water. It looks like you must have, the trap looks like it got a little round start to it.
I would think as long as it is set upside down, or on its side, it should last quite a while and serve you well.Never seen One in person up close.
Good post
-
Great job!!!
-
Another beav from the weekend.
long arming beavers. :yike:
-
Have you hit my reccomendation?

I always set it submerged so I don't have to check it as often. And upside down.
-
Have you hit my reccomendation?
No, I got too busy in other areas. I should be able to hit it in the fall.

I suppose the upside to that is going to be more quarry for you, they is a multiplying

Saturday we were able to have Bearhunter and his boys along with us and were blessed with this small beaver. Tonight we pulled our final trap out for the year and had another otter. That's it for us for the year. We were very blessed and had a fun year.
-
3 nails,
Me and my son are looking into getting our trapping licence but have no experience in this field. We have lots of Muskrats, Beavers and some Minks moving through the creek on my property. We were wondering what kind of traps and bait you use for the different types of critters, Also the placement of the trap. You brought up trapping at the Baseball game in Ferndale the other night and i believe it would be good for my boys and myself to learn another skill to pass down to the younger generations. After you turned me on to Hunting Washington and looking at your profile i am convinced you can teach me and my boys a thing or two about trapping. Any advice you can give us?
-
I'll certainly tell you what has been taught to me by so many other great trappers. It will put a good work ethic into your son without him knowing what's going on! We'll talk at the games or practice. Good to see you signed up.
-
Great job with the boys! Really nice otter and beav!! Congrats on a great season!
-
 congrats on a awesome year and thanks for sharing!!!!!!

I am fortunate to be from a great outdoor state like Missouri. As I write this i am sitting at my brothers house enjoying the view of some whitetail in the back yard. It will be sad to fly back tonight. Here in Missouri the Missouri Department of Conservation actually hosts trapping clinics. This is one of many programs they have here to endorse outdoor activities. The program is specifically designed for youth and beginning adults. I am sure that we (Washington residents) would never convince WDFW to endorse, sponsor or even assist in such a clinic. I have read many of the posts on the trapping forum and it is refreshing to see new people and kids getting involved in trapping.
Is it time for us as trappers to put on our own clinic? I know that it would be worth my time to help in facilitating such a program.
-
We're going to go a little heavier on how to demos at our Rendezvous this summer. Saturday should be full. Hope that helps.

We come from the same great outdoorsman's state. :) MDC has a different relationship with hunters there. A much much better working relationship.
-
:yeah: Me too. I was born and Fort Wood and got my first taste of trapping back there. One brother lives just North of there still. Love visiting back there. Too hot/ humid and too many creepy crawlies for the boss though.
-
awesome thread! great season of trapping you had!
-
Nails, You and the boys have come a long ways in just a year. Good work.

Yes, praise the Lord! We got a ton of good advice from other trappers and ran with it. IMHO, trappers are the most friendly and helpful of all outdoorsmen. (women)
