Few in the sound already. Headin for the mouth of the rivers. Seen 3 caught on the 15th. Averaging pretty small though.
Early run it sounds like this year.
-
Are you goin' after them? Always wanted to try that on a flyrod, never had the chance..

90% of my fishing is on a fly rod, it's a blast.......must try it!

Not yet, Gonna wait it out alittle, They were being caught on buzzbombs.
-
I need to get some to till into my garden. They are awesome fertilizer!

I absolutely love to eat them.
-
I guess they are okay if smoked correctly.
-
Fresh from salt water, properly cleaned/iced = good pink
Been in river, coloring up = bad to really bad pink
-
Thanks for the update. It is going to be a long run if it starts now in the salt and goes through Sept in the rivers. :IBCOOL: That's a lot of humpy.
-
Whats a good set up for a fly rod. I have been wanting to do that for a long time
-
Isn't it funny when everybody talks about pinks it's always the same answer "not bad smoked" Pinks dont really even flake when you cook them. I guess there fun to catch but annoying when your king or silver fishin and you keep hookib them damn things.
-

That's my plan as well. They are an absolute pain in the rear when fishing neah bay and a read an article two years ago saying to keep everyone you legally can because of how many there are anymore. I see no sense in even smoking them when there are chinook to be had.
-
This is what I can't wait for this summer.... To do this with my Boyz!
Here's a little taste of what it's going to be like for us.......
-
I'll be chasing them, I think they are a blast to catch on light tackle. I eat them fresh out of the salt, and smoke a bunch also.
-
:yeah:

I don't fish for pinks because I won't eat them. I have friends who smoke them but with all the coho and steelhead that I catch, there is really no reason to go though the process for what I feel are third rate fish. I do love the carcasses that I get from friends for my garden. Pinks are a hoot to catch, especially in the salt but I have no desire to keep them.
-
If taken care of right away and they are from the salt water the pinks make great smoked salmon.

yes and for canning too
-
Gross. Smoking a third-rate fish produces third-rate smoked fish. :twocents:
That said, I'm glad people enjoy them. This summer should be a blast with plenty of pinks to go around for those interested!
-
OK, you guys have me talked into it. I don't care if they're mushy, I'll smoke them or catch and release. PathfinderJR and I are going to make a trip. What is a good river to hit them with a flyrod?
-
The snohomish system has millions.
-
im only keeping hens. I like pinks because I can stock pile eggs like a mother hummer! then its in the smoker and given away to people that eat em. oh and the occasional fried pink and chips!
-
Lol you guys are crazy, pinks are delicious. People who dont or wont eat them are straight prudes. A fish is a fish, Sure theres better fish, There always will be some thing better to someone else. But Its a salmon. Im happy with any salmon brought to shore.
Pink, Silver, King, Steelhead. Whatever. Ill even eat the darkies, If you actually know how to cook you can make dirt taste good. :twocents:
If all else fails, The smoker works to.

More power to you! I suppose you could call me a fish snob, but I can't see a reason to eat pinks when I could eat fish that tastes far better. It's the same reason I don't BBQ up a freezer burned round steak when I have ribeyes and new yorks ready to go.

they arent my fave to eat, but I will eat some. once you eat sockeye it makes you a prude! haha. I save pinks for giving away or for cooking for visitors that dont normally eat fish so that way they stay away from my sockeye stash!

True, Like I said theres always something better out there. But Being from a low income family. Ill eat what I can get, and I always enjoy food in my mouth. So many people don't even get that. Id eat the pinks and save the good stuff for a special occasion like friday nights with the family or a get together with friends.

Yeah Ive never touched a sockeye. Caught/Eatin plenty of every other salmon though.
-
There are plenty of fisheries you could fish and catch a lot of tasty fish. A couple 20 or 30 pound kings make a lot of meals. Same is true for limits of coho. But, I certainly see your point and would eat whatever salmon I could catch if that was all I had.
If you truly are that hard up for fish, shoot me a PM and I will tell you exactly where and when to go fish to stock up.

We have a new Pink Panic Minnow that we are going to try out on the Pinks this year....should work well with a small jig head and light spinning tackle. We shall see......Here is a photo of them. May need to get to em when they are in the salt first.

Looks like something that might work good out at Dash Point Pier when battlefishing begins. Only problem I could see is the lack of weight. Buzzbombs have so much weight to them that they really fly. I think those jigs would work great though otherwise.
-
Battlefishing....perfect term.
-
That's why you wear waders or have a boat. A vast majority of people fishing for pinks don't want to work for it and are restricted to the bank. They also dont like it when you show up and limit out within eyesight when they haven't caught anything....

Smossy - I am dead serious about the info. In fact, if you swing by my house on the way I'll hook you up with the super-secret eggs...

I'm confused by this... it's a LOT harder bank fishing than boat fishing. What do you mean they don't work for it? :dunno:

Maybe he's talking about people who don't usually fish coming out during pink years that come out just for pinks for the "battlefishing" because of what they saw on the news about the millions and millions of fish coming every 2 years. But yeah I'm with bknilvr, we'll stick to the boat in the salt for salmon, lol we barely fish from the bank on rivers nowadays, too many freaking people on the rivers now even on off pink years.

People don't want to get into the water. If you buy a 50 dollar pair of waders you can effectively get away from most of the groups. Most folks would much rather sit high and dry than stand knee deep in water. Once you get away from the ten people who are shoulder to shoulder, fishing for pinks gets immensely easier. Which isn't very difficult to begin with.

I won't ever fish for pinks in the rivers... Even though my dad has a house right on the Puyallup river... Brings out all the absolute nimrods with their 8 foot leaders and corkies.
I can only handle hearing " it's in the mouth" so many time per minute.

Hmm.. I guess we never fished the same rivers. You literally cannot get away with staying dry, you're in with waders or not lol.

HAHAH this made me laugh.. yeah nimrods is a nice way of putting it. We fished Puyallup our first year fishing and it was ridiculous but we didn't know any better. Don't mind putting in the miles to get as far away as possible from there now.. but it's still elbow to elbow in most of the river mouths we hit :(
-
Branch out and you will realize that it doesn't have to be that bad....

I was raised on Alaska Sockeye. You should splurge on it just once.
I still eat the smoked pink though. I spent plenty on years without salmon to let even the pinks go to waste.
-
Pinks aren't that bad to eat, I agree. But they aren't good either. I'm picky because I can be, I realize not everyone can. Smoked pinks are ok, smoked silvers are good and smoked kings are delicious. I won't eat chum, they gross me out. People say the same thing about nasty barred chums, they are good smoked. Yeah right.
Wonder if I can make dog treats with the pinks? They feed salmon to their dogs on that Yukon men show.
-

Chum salmon got the name dog salmon because it was caught and used by alaskan natives as their sled-dogs' feed is what I've always heard.. pretty sure pinks and any other salmon would be fine
-
Chum is definitely for the dogs.
By the way, compared to many of the fish that people eat worldwide, Pinks would be a delicacy. We are spoiled to live in this part of the country where we have a selection of the best food in the world.
-
Are you goin' after them? Always wanted to try that on a flyrod, never had the chance..
That's what I'll be trying on the Skagit this year. Pinks on a 7wt fly rod. Should be fun.

As long as the pink don't stink, I say eat it.
-
If you guys catch CHROME chum whack em and smoke em. I'm not kidding it will be the best smoked salmon you've ever had. I'm gonna kill a bunch of scumpies this year because I'm gonna do a lot of playing with different homemade cures. Ill probably snake and can the first batch to see how they turn out, if not good they'll go to people at work.

Smossy and Sgirl, I'll get you two out to catch all the pinks you want, we will even try for summer kings off Possession. In fact I'll take anyone out for pinks that want's to go. I have all the gear and I only ask for a gas donation. Just shoot me a PM and when they show up in the Everett area, I'll start contacting those interested.
-
I did pickle some pinks one year. That made it easier to give away

There may be a few around during the Crab Outing. If so and they open it up then we will try to get a few. Otherwise plan on coming up in August.

At least they were using corkies, I saw a guy out there fishing with a 2 or 3 ounce swimbait on the Nisqually a couple years ago. He didn't know any better though what to use to fish for salmon, my dad and I showed him and his teen kids what to use and all that.

Wow, must have been trying to catch a biggun.... We are going to the Nush this week and will give the small 3" swim baits a try in between the slow times. Probably try them below a float for a bit for the fun of it.

I am confused maybe some of you guys can answer a question is marine area 12 open by the hoodsport hatchery for pinks, or do you have to release them. The regs are a little confusing on that area any help would be appreciated. Nevermind I found my answer.

Put a bait on a down rigger, pick a depth, troll slowly, crack open a cold one, wait until the fish strikes. :chuckle:

Isnt drinking beer on a boat illegal? Just like drinking beer in a car? :dunno:

As long as the operator is below 0.08 BAC, you're good. You can have a beer underway.

That is some offer. I'd stop asking questions and accept a gracious, generous gift. Beer or not, people pay money for trips like that.

Aren't you all special with your freezers overflowing with steelhead, sockeyes, etc.... Let's put down the fish that are available to more people than the elites, makes a lot of sense. :dunno: I have not yet had a person dislike any pink salmon I have served grilled or smoked that was caught out in the salt. Yeah, I'd love to be raking in the kings and coho, etc. but would rather spend my limited leisure time filling the freezer than getting a once in a while "1st or 2nd rate" fish.
Nice offers and feedback by some folks.
-
To each his own. :dunno: I also wouldn't put a chum in my freezer for anything,. I fail to see where any of us has "put someone down" for their choosing to keep pinks? You should be happy that some of us don't like them, it leaves more for you.
-

If Im not mistaken, Ripper is living a clean and sober lifestyle so there would be nothing on board.
Id probably leave the offer open for other people who cant really get out and fish at all. Id feel like I was wasting a seat.
-
I have had pretty good luck smoking various fish over the years but the pinks I smoke are usually mushy. Even with the immediate bleeding, bright fish, right onto ice after catching, the smoked fish is still mushy. I must be doing something wrong. Maybe more salt in the brine to reduce the moisture level in the fish. Or maybe I just need to smoke longer and dry them out more?
Are you guys that smoke pinks and having good luck doing a brine solution or a dry brine where you just put dry salt/sugar onto the fish?
-

Mushy? lol wth. Ive never had a problem with it. I usually use 2 cups of brown suger, to 1 cup of salt. + Whatever else I like depending on the fish species. That's usually my base though. Other things like garlic salt, old bay, pappy's seasoning. Combination spices have resulted my best tasting fish.
-
Nothing wrong with smoked pinks:
-
No no you are not wasting a seat! I've been telling you two for a while now that I plan on taking you fishing. You don't need to know anymore than how to reel them in. My lady will steer the boat, I'll set the downriggers and you just have to reel them in when I set the hook. So easy, a cave man could do it! :chuckle: :chuckle:

Sometime in July or August, Everett area. I hope that's not to limited. :chuckle: Probably sometime after the crab outing. If you are going to camp up this way, we may be able to go the day after the crab outing. Let's play it by ear.
-
I'm a fish snob admitted, the best smoked fish is steelhead or Reds, kings IMOsuck for smoking, they are for the bar B,silvers are good all arounders and humpys and dogs from the salt......................... you guys are really missing the boat and crazy for not pickleing them.River caught salmon anything is for under your corn plants in the garden.
Reds and blackmouth make pretty tasty Gravlax

I use dry brine for pinks. They smokeband taste fine is fresh and bled out. In Europe and Asia carp is a delicacy :chuckle:
I can bright chumsvand pinks too and they eat ok.

Suit yourself. More for me and my family. The more people I could keep off the rivers the better.

I love how this thread appears every pink year on every fishing forum in the northwest ha. I fish year around for salmon and steelhead but am far from a fish snob. Most pinks in my boat this summer will be bonked. To each his own
-
I would much rather smoke humpies than silvers or kings.....I'll eat them all fresh and bright on the grill but find humpies being a bit more oily smoke up very nice when taken care of. Bonk and bleed, ice them down, good to go. I'll be keeping all that I catch legally.

:yeah: I usually dry brine them, wash and dry, and dip them in a mix of honey, orange juice, and hot sauce and spices....then smoke long and low and the natural oils keep them good to go....never had any complaints.... but getting them clean and cold as fast as possible is key.
:EAT: then I like to mix that with cream cheese for cracker dip :EAT:

Flake it all with clean hands first to make sure no bones are in it before mixing it with whipped cream cheese. You can also mix in chopped chives, then freeze, people will be impressed when you bring it out around Thanksgiving and Christmas.
**for extra credit, try making log shapes with the finished dip, then roll the log in a mix of chopped herbs, spices, nuts, whatever, imitating the fancy dip logs you see at the store that cost 10 bucks or more for 4 ounces or so......

Humpie Dip:
Catch, bonk, bleed, and ice down poor little humpie.
Once home smoke or grill or simply boil meat, cool, remove bones and crumble meat.
In a bowl mix mayo, relish, chives, a little onion, dijon spicy mustard. Mix then add meat, mix some more.
Put in fridge while going for a quick run to buy some crackers.
Get home, grab crackers, cooler, fishing gear, and now chilled humpy dip.
Fish for more humpies while eating crackers with large amounts of dip per cracker.

Get home, grab crackers, cooler, fishing gear, and now chilled humpy dip.

lol I like that idea.

Some good stuff.......easy to eat on the run while chasing fish up and down the bank. Transportable, simple....what more do you want.
-
Sounds like you might want to bring some of that dip and crackers into your hunting blind in September. Kokanee will substitute for pinks in that recipe. It'll give you a way to occupy your time while your sitting in the same spot hour after hour.
-
Going to need something. I can handle a little time in the blind but we are going to have to mix it up. A little tree stand, a little hiking slow hunting...some spot and stalk....gotta be prepared to hunt in whatever manner it takes to get on the game right!

Hey Smoosy do you eat shad? If so I can save some for you. I keep a few for bait and then catch and release but if you will get them I will set some a side.
-
Smossy, learn to pickle those shad. They actually taste pretty decent that way.

Never had the opportunity to try them. I hear if you just fry them up real good they're delicious to eat, bone and all.

I need to learn to pickle/can things period. Im still young to the game so Ill pick it all up years to come.

I've got a pickling recipe that is easy and the results are dynamite. It came from oklahoma of all places one would think Alaska .My dad's buddy who spent 40 years working in alaska as a processor superintendant gave it the two thumbs up as one of the best he'd had of the hundreds he tried. I've done sockeyes silvers ,and dogs caught in the salt .
Upon proof reading my chicken scratching on the card and consulting the original via the net I'm editing with a link cause I had it about 3/4 right.

I am headed to the north end of hood canal 4th of july weekend...a family home about 3 miles south of Hood Canal Bridge (near Kitsap Memorial Park). I know very little about salmon fishing in hood canal...any chance I will encounter pinks? Any advice for catching them if they are in that area? Or should I not waste my time and just keep to my crab pots?
-
Pickled Shad - what? Seriously of course there are people in the world that eat fried goat eyes and monkey brains too... Man I love Shad--- as Sturgeon bait that is...
Pinks - I guess if I couldn't catch enough Silvers or Kings to fill the freezer they would be ok, heck 99% of canned stuff is pink anyhow.. Still after living in AK for so long, can't bring myself to save a Pink for anything... A buddy saves everyone one of them, loves them..

When I did my time at a cannery 99% was sockeye. Maybe its changed?

Cannery I was at it was 100% pinks, the others went to the flash freeze section. Southeast,My guess is you were in Bristol bay

This should be moved to the cooking section and then locked. Five pages of the same old debate. I try to be snob about my fish, but I'll be damned if a few don't hit the BBQ and the smoker this year. I think people just like to have something to debate about.
-
Lock the thread? Same old debate about humpies? LOL. What about draw results, combat fishing at Hoodsport, how long is an ethical shot with a rifle... Half the time time it is all :beatdeadhorse: I say let the odd-year tradition continue.
-
I have a neighbor that wants to get his boat out to fish (I got him set up with downriggers this spring). Has anyone heard of any action off Eagle Point yet (San Juan Is.)?
-
No need to lock the thread.......we wil have some more good recipes and humpy pics of bloody coolers. Keep the thread going!

really looking forward to the pink run! I know its not peoples most desired fish, but I think its a blast to pull in nice sized fish after nice sized fish on the river. its a real treat when you put in the hours of fishing for one or two of the other species. I think its cool when you feel the pinks swimming into your legs cause they're so thick, lol :IBCOOL:
I plan to fish for pinks in the rivers and salt this year, been counting down for a while. Looking forward to seeing peoples pics and also some more recipes, that Humpy Dip sounds like it has serious potential.
ever seen "Bizarre Foods" on tv? people eat much worse.....

Exacttylyyy! lol Cant even remember how many times Ive been whacked in the legs by fish swimming under me.

Lets hear some pickling recipes. I have two I can share but will have to dig them up. One takes about a week or more longer than the other because you are salt curing the fish first. I prefer the texture of that one but the flavor of the other where you basically cook the fish before pickling.

Way too early for pinks, just check the wdfw site for creel checks for when they're coming in. We try to guesstimate our trips to Sekiu and all that based upon past years creel checks.
-
Are you goin' after them? Always wanted to try that on a flyrod, never had the chance..
90% of my fishing is on a fly rod, it's a blast.......must try it!
:yeah:
anything pink works.
-
Anyone have any advice of where to go to target some from shore? You can pm me if you dnt want to post them. Wanna get my wife into something fun and these guys send like the ticket.
-
No need to lock thread, heck I wil :chuckle:l give anyone all of my pinks for sure. If they like them then so be it. I hate Tomatoes, Mushrooms and any form of Humus..... :chuckle:

So whats the magic setup in the salt trolling from a boat, any pics of gear?

Small pink hoochies behind a flasher work real well. I always enjoy going out and fly fishing for them the best. Just find out where they are moving along the shores and toss some pink clowsers at them with and intermediate line. It's a great time when you want to catch some pinks. That's the only way I fish them in the sound

I've caught them on full size hoochies as well and coho killer spoons, watermelon and army truck. If the fish are there, I am not sure if you can keep them from biting. When the killer whales show up, hang on cuz the fish are going to bite. ;)

:yeah: Pinks are in?? WT, You guys are way too excited :chuckle: Don't buy into the hype and spend a ton of money on gear only to be let down at the last minute with news of a low run and closures. It's happened before. Don't believe in a big run till you see it :twocents:
-
Beer bottle caps with a hook secured via split ring work good too, their pinks/humpies they'll take anything.....
But a small white flasher with 30" behind pink hoochie or pink spoon work absolutely awesome... But then you got to keep those nasty buggers after they swallow the hook.... :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Pinks can be fun for a newbie. They get to catch a salmon and have something to take home. Guess they are not bad to eat, just not for me. Do like to fish for them in the Snohomish with a trout rod but have yet to take one home. Must have caught 100s in my 40 plus years of fishing but unless I have a newbie it the boat that's never caught a salmon I won't even net one. Doe's that make me a snob, maybe, but I know that sooner or later a good eating fish will bite. That said if you fish for them catch a bunch. Used to be you could not keep me off the water and fishing for anything that swims. Thus my handle. Guess what though, I'm not all that fond of eating fish!! :yike:
-
In SE Alaska we killed the pinks on Pixies and pink Roostertails.

That's suppose to read 40+ years of salt fishing. Been fishing about 57 years.
-
They are also a blast to catch on ultra-light (4Lb test) trout gear, LOL

I've always used pink buzz-bombs on them in Alaska. Casting to any rises or jumpers. Works wonders off beaches for me.
I enjoy catching them but can't eat em. Can't seem to shake the horrible memory of the smell of them in the blast freezer at the cannery I worked at on PoW Island :o
