Elk season is just days away. It always seems like I'm never as prepaid as I should be but I guess I'm pretty much ready. Both bows shooting good most of the broad heads I have are set up and ready. Just ordered 18 new arrows 12 field points 6 new broadhead brings my total broadhead count to 26 (should be plenty). Going over next Sunday with H20hunter to do the finishing touches on stands and blinds and hanging a few cams again. I'll be leaving on the 31st and not coming home until the 15th :IBCOOL:
-
I know you want to account for all mishaps and what have you, but why do you carry so many arrows? 2 Bows, releases etc., I understand. I'm purely inquiring so I may learn something I dont know, or havent thought of.
-
I am counting down to my elk hunt as well. 29 days and counting. Been purchasing gear, checking old gear, shooting my bow, working out and stretching at the gym. I also get some funny looks when I am driving home from work and blowing on my cow calls. :chuckle:
-
17 days and a wake up!
-
I only carry 5 arrows at a time but throughout the years broadhead have just been collecting so I took them all down had new blades put in them then had them put on arrows. Once I have a broadhead tuned and on an arrow I don't take it off until it has been shot. I for one wouldn't leave on a week long hunting trip with less than 12 broadheads.
-
Good to know. Ill keep a few more on hand when I go.
-
I feel like a kid going on vacation....are we there yet...are we there yet....are we there yet :chuckle: few more weeks and its elk season...cant wait :IBCOOL:
-
First time in years that I don't have family obligations and I do have alot of vacation time at the same time, taking the 1st week of archery elk off and hitting 560 hard. Unfortunately my elk hunting buddies are either working or their wives are making them vacation in Europe so I'm going solo.
Happy, happy, happy! :)
-
14 days and Ill be setting up camp. I am suuuuuuper excited.
-
Count me in for the count down.... I got all 2 weeks off for bow season. First time I've had 2 straigt weeks off of work in 8 years and I couldn't think of a better way of using my vacation time!

Hey, you shoot better than that!
-
Yeah I shoot alright won a few 3-D shoots here and there but I have an addiction I guess. Some guys collect stuff I collect bow stuff.

 I take 5 broadheads in the quiver and a few extra in the pack plus 6 or 7 extra arrows.
-
CAn't wait!!
-
I'm already planning meals.
-
My meals have been planned for weeks. I already inventoried all my gear. Getting the trailer ready. should be good to go by the end of the week.
-
I am all packed and have been for two weeks. :IBCOOL:
-
I was out working in the garage yesterday and decided to get all my gear out and separated that I will need for Oregon. We don't even leave for like 3 and a half weeks. :yike:
-
Next two weeks are going to be sooooo painful! I'm feeling relatively prepared, but am still wondering what I've forgotten, what I should get for back ups, etc.
-
Say NO to the GIF!

That sounds like heaven. I don't leave until the 9th.
-

70 yard pin set :chuckle:

Pink fletchings complete to? :IBCOOL:

70 yard pin set :chuckle:
Good shooting! Would you shoot an elk at 70 yards? ???

I think it is good to practice out far for two reasons. One is it makes those 30-40 yard shots seem way too easy. Also, if I get an arrow in an animal and he runs a bit and stops at 60 or 70 yards, I would love to be able to try and get another one in him before he gets into the deep, dark, nasty stuff.
-
In the right conditions.
-
Ive seen the boy shoot....I'd bet a gentlemans dollar he could make the shot. the force is strong with this one.

I didn't mean that 70 yards was an unethical shot and I was just curious if he would or not. I also shoot way further than average distances in practice than I would in the woods.
After a few groups at 60 or more and then stepping in to 35, it's way easier. I think I would shoot at a broadside elk at 60, not a whitetail though.
For the record, D-Rock you are a much better shot than I

This is about to turn into one of those H2O Hunter / D-Rock threads now.
We held it off as long as we could
-
Ill take a 60 yard shot on a elk and 70 if its calm and relaxed and know the exact range
-
One week and counting.
-
D-rock...What's up with the pink fletchings!!!!!

-
:chuckle:
-
Got more packing to do today but have a concert to go to tonight with the wife :bash:
-
Alright I have to admit concert last night was pretty good. More packing tonight a fantasy football draft at 7 than more packing. Its coming faster than I expected :IBCOOL:
-
Im in the same boat...Still need to pack more...the wife wants to do things, work, wife, work, wife...have to make her happy so I can scoot out of here and miss her bday
-
Only one mor work day.
-
No way will I make it all day...im leaving work around 2....
-
I can't leave till Monday early. For all of you getting out of town today...be safe..let's go stick some!!! Last night was my second night in a row that couldn't sleep. If I keep this up, Im going to fall asleep in my stand and miss the elk.
The brain is in full hunting prep mode.
-
I am working all next week and missing the first 4 days of the season. :bash: One of these years I am taking the two week garden leave.
-
my company was just bought out by a bigger company. The CEO of the company wanted me back on the east coast next week for meetings...I told him there was no way that was happening!. They rescheduled for the week of the 23rd. I would have literally packed my bags at work and told them where to go if they interupted hunting season..
-
Well......here we are...........final day for prep for me and a few buddies. I've got most of my gear laid out and have a few things to square away. Got a text from a buddy that is making the Costco run and said that the big boy (1.75L) of Jack was on sale. Gonna get after that and the elk real soon!!!!!!!!!!!
-
You just man the bottle and let the professional handle the elk. You just be ready to pack when needed.
-
Dont forget your tags!!!! I made sure that mine were tucked away in the truck weeks ago. I forgot them 2 years ago...
Don't drink that jack the night before either. One year I puked all the way up the hill in the am due to drinking Jack the night before the opener. Oddly enough, I shot a nice 4X3. Man that was hell packing that sucker hung over.
-
My theory is to just keep the jack flowing at a steady rate....not to little, not to much.....just a nice steady intake. I've got three tags that are all fair game with the bow. I've got plenty of time to do both.
-
Sounds like you have a nice vacation planned.
-
Exactly!
-
Maybe i'll bring some fireball and a crap ton of beer. Nothing hydrates you for packing out a cow like a half rack of busch.
I decided i'm not bringing a bow.
-
I don't know what to do with you two.
-

H20, On a rare occasion elk and deer have been taken by the person that stays in camp during the day. It's happened in my deer camp a couple times. One of our deer camp a certain member usually takes a day off mid hunt and just relaxes and then an animal walks right through camp with him in his lawn chair. You to, could join that club... ;)
-
Geye..........how do they shoot camp critters during the day when they are sleeping off the bender from the night before? I'm nowhere near that seasoned.
Stang.......bring extra beer and of course some fireball. I'm bringing an extra bow.....you can use that. My BIL shot is last so I'm sure it is still sighted in.
D....it has only begun. I got a new bannana hammock for sleeping.
-
Sounds to me like that's going to be his only option. Unless he and stang happen to run into elk while heading to town for more beer.
-

I decided i'm not bringing a bow.
Replace water with Fireball, while making pancake batter. Them's some good pancakes!! The alcohol gets cooked off but the flavor remains!!
-
You know, I said I wasn't gonna hunt elk this year, But after playing with my diaphram calls. Im dam good with only a few weeks in. I think I may give it a try, Anyone want to tag along and help a brotha out? Preferably someone who knows a thing or two about elk?
-
Just got home. Elk camp is all set up. Gotta work the next two days then back up I go.
-
Reminds me of the few days before X-mas as a kid growing up.
-
I'm counting down... The hours
-
Didn't think today's work day was ever going to end but finally, 5 o'clock rolled around. Got most of my gear packed and ready to load Sunday morning, got all but 1 "honey-do" taken care of, I'll take care of that tomorrow night ;). Just have to go do some grocery shopping tomorrow and then its game on with all next week off.
A co-worker was working a couple miles from where I plan on setting up camp today and spent his lunch watching a herd of about 30 elk grazing in a large clearcut. Been a couple weeks since I've been up there, glad their still around.
:)
-
went up on my last scouting trip wednesday, spotted 3 bulls, and had another on my camera. gotta work most of the season but ill be out there thursday, friday, and saturday morning this week, and then thursday and friday next week (if needed) cant wait!!!
