KIRKLAND, Wash. – Neighbors on the Eastside say they’re arming themselves against a wild animal that is attacking family pets in the middle of the day. One dog is recovering and another dog is still missing, and authorities have been receiving a number of reports about missing cats.
This is all happening near the Kirkland Trail, a popular greenway that connects downtown Kirkland to Bellevue.
King County Animal Control and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife have come out to the Kirkland neighborhoods to investigate. People in the neighborhoods said they’re scared to go outside.
They describe the animal as a coyote or a wolf-dog hybrid and believe it’s getting more and more aggressive.
Recovering from her injuries, 7-year-old dog Lucy will be staying inside for a while. Her owner said she had several puncture wounds after an attack by a possible coyote right in her front yard, with the dogsitter standing watch.
“She saw a large coyote that looked like a wolf come out from the bushes and right before it attacked our little dog, she started screaming, but the coyote took our dog by the neck and was gone,” said Deborah Schadt, the dog’s owner.
Neighbors found the dog barely alive and about a hundred yards away. While Lucy will survive, another neighbor Steve Wilkes is still missing his 9-month-old puppy, Rogue, after a similar attack Friday. They fear she’s dead.
Now several agencies are investigating, including the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.
“It sounds like in this particular neighborhood a lot of cats have been disappearing but again these coyotes are smart,” said Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Sgt. Kim Chandler.
Chandler said coyotes are uncommon in Kirkland, but witnesses say the animal they’ve seen is bigger and bolder than those they’ve encountered before.
For now, Chandler recommends keeping small pets inside.
“These urban coyotes have learned this type of behavior,” said Chandler. “They learned that it’s a lot easier to snatch a cat or little dog.”
Homeowners are hoping more can be done so they don’t have to keep living in fear.
“It would be good if they could track one and determine how vicious it is and if it is becoming too socialized, urbanized and too aggressive,” said Schadt.
Chandler said he’s called the U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife to see if the agency will intervene.

scared to go outside! good lord what a bunch of babies :cryriver: is this within city limits? otherwise :mgun:
-
Potentially the very ones that keep voting our hunting rights away. Sounds like they have a problem they should deal with!
-
Isn't the usual response supposed to be 'the coyotes were there first' and 'if you don't like living with wildlife, you should move'? :sry:

No problem. They just want it relocated to your neck of the woods.
-
The phrase "poetic justice" does come to mind.
Although to be fair, we have no idea what the opinions of the people who are losing pets etc to this animal are on hunting.
I have to say it does seem a bit pathetic, whatever their political affiliations. If an animal is destroying your property or threatening you, it dies. It's hard not to feel a little like rolling your eyes when everyone's throwing up their hands in terror from a coyote.

APPERENTLY you haven't watched Zombeavers!
-
Small pets should not be allowed outside alone where coyotes roam, but people being scared is hilarious. Ignorant wusses.

:yeah:
Perhaps they should have this "native and majestic animal" placed on some endangered species list and then authorize a government agency to study this issue exhaustively for the next 10 years, spending millions of taxpayer dollars trying to figure out the best way to protect it's rights....
-
My neighborhood had a problem coyote for awhile but one day he just disappeared.
-
This is the best type of news I like to hear about! :IBCOOL: Stay inside folks!!!!! :chuckle:
-
Shelter in place, people! No one is safe.

Yeah, but not when its THEIR neighborhood.
-
Just imagine the press that a wolf pack in the neighborhood would generate :IBCOOL:
-
Lol

Haha US fish and wildlife?

Try mentioning lethal options.

Well..... back when I lived in Kirkland I had a problem with wild craneflies.

Kirkland just passed an emergency ordinance that all new houses must be constructed of brick.

There's mention made in one article of the guy who spotted it thinking it was a wolf or a wolf/hybrid dog.

"In other news, it was determined earlier today that Kirkland has the state's largest and most dense concentration of (Insert P-word here), or scaredy-cats, after a single coyote sent chills and a wave of fear through the city's entire population. The two remaining hunters in the population were reported to be 'incredibly embarrassed'."
-
Maybe it's time for the black, unmarked van to drop off a few "slightly oversized" coyotes in Kirkland. ;)

"Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Sgt. Kim Chandler.~
~Chandler said coyotes are uncommon in Kirkland"
Im betting Chandler doesn't live in E King Co. I know of 2 coyote dens just NE of where this happened. There were also a few reports back in Jan about coyotes in the Kirkland, Bothell, Kenmore area snatching pets.
-
I saw a BIG Coyote several years ago walking down the middle of NE8TH just off 405. Thought the 5lanes of road were for him!

I used to try and call the coyotes behind the winery. None would come out to play.

Jackelopes have been know to roam that area. I think with them around you won't have to worry about coyotes.
-
These were in Spokane a couple of years ago and the local news had some more just last week.

Haha!!
I'm listening to coyotes right now. Better not go outside I guess.

Ive got at least 6 or 7 different cougars that cruise through my yard on a pretty regular basis, plus a handful of bears. The coyotes here are the least of my worries, and i have no problem going outside. Of course i slways have a gun on my hip like a smart person.

:yeah:
Its a coyote but it would be so damn sweet if it was actually a wolf!
-
I would leave Kirkland after i killed that coyote.
Wouldn't want to be associated with so many panzies.
-
We see them all the time at our Tacoma home, neighbor lady came over to the house a couple months ago and warned us we shouldn't go out at night because they'd been seen in our area. Geeze, told her my wife and I see them just about every morning and the only thing that shouldn't be out and about at night is her cat. (thought just after that I should have told her to let the damn thing out at night as it would scare them away, LOL). Seems to be a good year for them, we're seeing way more than usual around our eastside home-think I may actually try calling them in over there this winter. Never tried it before, but they could really use a little thinning out.
-
sounds like good cat control !
-
I hope it's at Paul Allens house, eating his dog and attacking his kids......

Well, if your hearing them down by town, and they are being seeking in Kirkland, obviously the coyote population is moving out of the country and into the city's.
Wonder what's moving them....oh I know.....wolves.
What.......is that what's lurking around out here! It's official I'm not leaving my house...ever! meth heads with weapons that's fine, but wild animals, no thanks AHHHHUUUUUGGGGGHHHH

With all due respect, that's the same type of bs anti-gunners say about pro 2A people. I dunno about you, but i don't want to be anything like those people, wishing death on kids and all that, even if jokingly, just to further their agenda.
Irks me. Not something i'm going to shut up about when i see it, like watching someone with poor muzzle control.

We knocked the tar out of them in the valley years ago. They were attacking dogs at the off leash park at Marymoor park. Numbers were WAY out of control. Nasty mangy flee bitten critters you hated to even touch. We used cat in distress. No urban coyote can resist that!!
