Sorry, couldn't resist! :chuckle:
After a few months of waiting, stalling, ignoring, and just being lazy I finally got my 6.5 BRX project done. For years I stood by my stance that ARs are the most boring gun in the world. Then I became a little more familiar with the Grendel/264 LBC and I began to soften a bit on my stance. Once I got my little CZ 527 in 264 LBC built I realized that for an itty bitty little case, the LBC/Grendel could really perform pretty well. After shooting the 264 out to about 900 yards I felt like I needed a little more.
With a little gentle encouragement from a few guys who are more than happy to help me waste my money, we decided that I needed to build an AR. The obvious choice was the LBC. Since I consider myself an elitist gun hipster who has to have something that's not too "main stream" the LBC in an AR wouldn't work. While trying to come up with wildcat that would function through an AR-15 sized gun I kept coming back to the 6 BR case. It's the perfect length and it's about as fat as a case can be before you have to deal with a rebated rim in the AR platform. I was familiar with the 6 Dasher and 6 BRX from when I used to shoot bench rest so they seemed like the perfect fit. As it turns out I was a few years late to that party and AR-15 Performance beat me to it. I ordered up one of the ARP 6.5 BRX barrels with the matching bolt and barrel extension and was good to go.
After that I picked up a matched billet upper and lower from Grizz Precision and it all sat in my safe for a few months. :chuckle: Some recent events re-ignited the project so we finally got around to slapping it together. I can build a Savage on the tailgate of my truck using parts I find on the floor in my garage (which I've done ;)) but assembling an AR is out of comfort zone so I farmed that work out the a guy who we will refer to as Gunsmith X. This is mostly because he doesn't have time to assemble a bunch of parts for everyone else since he has a bunch of way cooler projects that he really needs to hurry up and finish because I'm tired of waiting and it's taken way to long and now I wish it would just be done so he can move on to the next project because I'm already bored with the next three ideas that he has. :chuckle: WHOOH! now I have to catch my breath!
So here it is; I don't really know what most of the parts are though. I gave some random guy a bunch of money and told him to build something nice. My only request was that it use an A2 style stock so that it handles better when shot off of a rear rest.

The barrel is a 20" helical fluted Criterion from ARP. The scope on there now is a Sightron SIII 3.5-10. I think it's a pretty good match.
The 6.5 BRX will beat the Grendel by a pretty easy 200 FPS. My formed cases have a 16%+ advantage over my Hornady Grendel brass and come in 17% behind the my 6.5x47 Lapua brass (formed from Win 22-250 cases). I got some brass formed this morning and I'll try and get some full power loads tested later today. Here's a formed BRX next to a Grendel.

You can see where the old shoulder on the 6 BR case was before fireforming. Forming brass was pretty easy. Just run a Lapua 6 BR case over a 7mm expander and then neck it down with a .286 bushing to create a false shoulder. Then I load them up with 31gr of Varget and a 123 A-max. All 30 shots I fired went into about .5" at 50 yards while getting the scope sighted in and forming brass. Fire forming rounds feed and cycle through the action with no problem. The rifle has an adjustable gas block so I followed Gunsmith X's advice and started with the gas block pretty much closed and then slowly opened it until the bolt would lock back after a shot. Every round after the adjustment cycled and ejected perfectly. I'm using a 10 round 6.8 SPC mag and it will hold 6 rounds comfortably. You can cram a 7th in there but the mag bulges just enough that it drags while trying to insert it.
I'm going to load up and head back out as soon as the brass gets out of the tumbler and I get it all annealed. The next round of testing will be full power loads with a 130 Accubond.

Way cool!! Gotta hand it to "Gunsmith X" he knows his way around a AR. 8)
Definitely Elk smoking material.
Googles probably blowing up with 6.5 BRX searches, the arm chair warriors need to get up to speed. To bad their looking at the last barrel, extension, bolt combo avaiable. :chuckle:

Yep he sure does. But I don't think he likes the Seahawks very much. :chuckle:
Nice AR.

Let me know what velocity you get...

Nice looking gun York! Always love the Ops-4 style side charge upper! Was the preferred upper we used on the Black Mtn builds, both for function and sleek looks.

While I have done allot of business with "Gunsmith-X", I have never met Mr. X in person. Yorke has.

I'm familiar with OPFOR, but OPS-4?
Is that some video game thing?

what is the weight with scope? mike w
It's right at 10# with a mag and 5 rounds.
I just got back from testing the 130 accubonds. I only had 15 of them left so I didn't get as much done as I wanted. I started with 31.0gr of IMR 8208 and went as high as 34.0gr. 34gr gave 2640fps and 3 shot groups just a touch under .5" at 100 yards. There's still a lot of room to bump up that powder charge, I just ran out of bullets to test. I started pretty low on the charges just to be on the safe side.
I'm already happy with the results. I run my 19" Grendel at 2430 fps with the 130 accubonds so I've already beat that by a solid 200 fps. Granted 2430 is on the slower side for the 130s in a Grendel, that's just where mine shoots the best. I'll hit an easy 2750 fps in the BRX.

Just remember to round down all your velocity numbers by 100 FPS.
Sounds like a real dog to me. :chuckle:
I'd give it away.

I'd thump a elk with that any time. 130 grain accubond at 2600fps heck yeah

I'd offer to sell it to you but I think it's a little out of your league. : :chuckle:
Nobody would want this thing. Most people I know are too afraid of fire forming to own anything worth while. Don't even mention a caliber with no factory ammo! They're the same types who consider the 338 Edge an impractically large caliber and my bolt action pistols novelties that are worthless past 200 yards!

I'm actually supposed to go on a cow elk hunt with Bearpaw at the end of the month with my dad and my son (if I can get away from work!) I'm really trying to get this up and running by then! I won't have a chance to get out again until next Sunday though so I'm running out of time.

Looks pretty sweet. A little heavy for a hunting rifle I would carry but looks pretty sexy.
-
Looks great. I can't imagine a better elk rifle than that. Especially if a lot of follow up shots are required. Hopefully you'll get to test it out on your guided hunt. Will you be in Utah?
-
This is far too light a caliber for elk, so please sell it to me at a tremendous discount to recup a little of your money.
Of course, I only extend this generous offer to you if you load up 300+ rounds of that load as part of the deal........ I don't fire form.

That's why I shoot everything in the head. :chuckle:

Well I hope you get a break and can go dump a cow  Elk don't like accubonds :chuckle: I stuck a 225g accubond in my cow at 400 this year. She is delicious but 12 years later I'm still after my first bull :chuckle: This was my first rifle tag all the others have been archery and there is not much tastier then a nice cow or yearling

I feel the same way. I actually built it as a target rifle. The goal was to have a gas gun capable of holding .5 MOA out to 1000 yards under the right conditions. I basically wanted a caliber that could move a bullet with a BC of at least .5 to a minimum 2500 fps. The Grendel does that but without much room to spare. Move the same bullet more than 200 fps faster and I can stretch that range to 1200 yards. Before finding the BRX barrel and corresponding bolt head, I had no interest in building an AR. It was all about finding the right cartridge.
That said, I wouldn't hesitate to shoot anything on 4 legs with this gun under the right conditions. It's not nearly as cool as running the 458 Arnold or one of the 338s or 375s, but I have no doubt that it would work!

It's a tough decision because I'd love to take my 338/375 Ruger Striker along and use that! I had my dad practicing all summer with an old tang safety Ruger 300 Win Mag that he's feeling pretty confident with out to 300 yards off of a set of sticks. If I had more time I'd see how he shoots the new BRX and I'd have him run that instead of the 300. My son is just coming along as a non hunter this trip. Otherwise he'd be all over this BRX!

Yes, we're going to Utah. My son is super excited about it, I'm not so excited about the drive though. We'll leave Tuesday night after I get off work and drive until we get there.
As far as follow up shots, I wouldn't know what to do if I needed one! I'm so used to everything just dropping after the first hit that half the time I don't even load more than 1 round it the gun. Of course I typically shoot calibers in a slightly different class than these small bore plinkers. :chuckle:

Well, at least in Utah you should have a good odds of getting a long range opportunity. Good luck!

I think those big calibers are bad for the environment. Noise, lead, burning hundreds of grains of powder, etc etc.
Scaring livestock
Bunnies
It's just wrong

That would be great as well. I was at a smiths place and he has a 6.5x47 bolt action pistol proto type. It was so sweet and I was almost bad and ordered one. I am finishing my 6.5 stw and just got a new king thumper 458 lott. So the spare gun fund is down a little :chuckle:

I'll have to pull a trailer for all of my backup rifles! Between the 375 Ruger, 375 BME, 6.5 Badger, 338/375 Rife, 338/375 Striker, 458 Arnold, 300 Win Mag and the 480 Ruger I have so many "appropriate" elk calibers that it would fill the bed of the truck for them to all tag along!

In a perfect world I'd manage to get one with my iron sighted 480 Ruger. That's a 60 yard and in weapon though. Those 400 grain bullets drop like a rock! :chuckle:

Just as accurate and a whole lot faster on a mag fed, gas operated modern platform. What's not to like?
Last Remington 700 I picked up in 6.5x55 (Rem700 Classic) I had rechambered to 6.5-284. Some considered it a shame. I called it a improvement.

That picture helps..I think I know who gunsmith "X" is!!

I'm not much of an AR fan, but that looks like it was a fun project. It's nice to see something different on the AR platform. Is anyone out there running this down to a 22 caliber? Please just tell me no, last thing I need to hear is some body is making a 22-250 equivalent work on a standard AR 15 platform.

Black Hole Weoponry does a 22-6.8 SPC. I've built several and several members here have them.

But damg I'm startin to think these guns are lookin sexy. Hunt-wa is corrupting my purity.

Got a care package yesterday. Some "Gunsmith X" odor to it. It will be slower than yours, seeing it's a 6.5 Grendel necked down to 6mm but should cruise the 6mm 95gr Berger VLD's at 3K. Just got it spun together today.

Don't I ever get any time to get some work done? :chuckle:
So today was a trip out with the 130gr Berger VLD (not the new AR Hybrids). I wanted to run the Accubonds again but I couldn't find any locally. I started at 33.5gr of IMR 8208 and worked up to 35.5gr. I'm slowly working up as I have time and the 35.5gr charge isn't showing any signs of pressure so I'll work up a little higher next trip out. The velocity results were pretty satisfying.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi162.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ft260%2Fcollegekidandy%2F9612FED1-9660-451A-9CF4-86EEB41EAF83.jpg&hash=0aa76cb48d385d21e32f1387f672b08033921479) (http://s162.photobucket.com/user/collegekidandy/media/9612FED1-9660-451A-9CF4-86EEB41EAF83.jpg.html)
2780 fps with a 130gr bullet from a 20" AR-15. That's right there with a 260/Creedmoore/Lapua from the same length barrel but in a smaller package. This should keep me super sonic to about 1200 yards which means I managed to hit my goal. Next step is to refine the loads and see how well they'll shoot. Groups are in the .5" range with the higher charges with the VLD and get better as the velocity goes up. I'll have to get some of the Hybrids to see how they work as well. The jump with the VLDs is going to make getting really good groups a bit of a challenge.

Ya know a few years back I would see guys packing these military weapons out hunting and just thought there was something wrong about that being a classic weatherby type of guy.
I never warmed up to the ARs until the calibers started to get a little more interesting. The 223 is disappointing in almost every possible way to me. I don't need surplus or inexpensive ammo, it's too small to really hunt anything bigger than a coyote, and I've personally never had one that shot well in any platform. The Grendel/LBC got my attention but still came up a little bit short ballisticly for me. It was the side charger uppers and some of the new calibers that got my attention. I hate forward assists and shell deflectors and I wanted a legit 1000 yard target AR.
I'll always be a bolt gun guy when it comes to hunting rifles though. You just can't cram enough powder in an AR to make it really fun! ;)

I started at 33.5gr of IMR 8208 and worked up to 35.5gr. I'm slowly working up as I have time and the 35.5gr charge isn't showing any signs of pressure so I'll work up a little higher next trip out. The velocity results were pretty satisfying.

Woof :chuckle:
I'll buy it for scrap value as it clearly won't kill anything.
I'd git a tikka in 308. Now that 308 is a really cool new cartridge. Snippers use it ya know.

:chuckle:
Great speeds for a 20" AR and 6.5 130's!
May want to up that charge a bit, just a bit more speed. Wouldn't want it to bounce of a Elk at 400 yards and beyond.

Makes the Creedmoor and ar10 look pretty average doesn't it?

The internets have spoken! I'll sell this pile of misfit parts and get a Tikka in 308 then! Should I go with a Barska or Counter Sniper scope on my Tikka 308 though?
The problem with having spent so many years working with over the top wildcats in rifles is that anything under 3200 fps just sounds slow..... :chuckle:

I hate you guys.......

Tasco sooper snipper with a 40 moa base.

A part of me does feel like I don't deserve this rifle. I just don't think I'll really love or appreciate it as much as I should. It's probably just going to get stuffed in the back of the safe and forgotten about. What a waste really........ :chuckle:

I call DIBBS on the barrel and bolt. Of course that's once you have felt you have abused it enough and bounced bullets off enough animals to realize it's a complete trinket set up.

I offered to trade it for a home made slingshot.

I already told you, I'll only trade if your slingshot is made from a fair trade, locally sourced, non gmo, sustainably harvested cocobolo burl. And I want 3 goats, 14 chickens, a well, and 16 iPads donated to a village in the Congo in my name. Then you can have my second hand pile of parts gun.

That's a pretty fair trade, just sayin.........

NICE!!! Now I just wish I had a 6.5 barrel to play with. I want a 6.5WSSM type thingy.
What is the nose length on the 130 AR Hybrid??

what is the weight with scope?
I have 2580 FPS with my 6.5 Grendel 123 gr Hornady boat tails. My 100 yd groups are about .5".

And that's a very cool gun.

:chuckle:
How was the elk hunt?

Nice rifle BTW
But hey aren't those, those semiautomatic assault rifles who's only real use is to kill as many people in a short amount of time as they can? Thought they were not sporting at all.
and before the flame monsters hit me was being sarcastic of course I know you can hunt with one. Have before myself with my mac 90 I had just being a butt.
Again nice rifle. Get tired of it I'll take it off your hands :chuckle:
you built that yourself nice job if so.

I go to work for a few hours and this is what happens? :dunno: I can't leave you kids alone long enough to go to the store without this whole thing getting shut down, opened up, shut down, opened back up and then edited and blacked out like the Warren Commision Report! :chuckle:
In all seriousness I'll only make this one comment on the whole topic of the ban which I think is only fair since it was my thread that was hijacked. I find it ironic that in a group of individuals who are so often critical of the "liberals" for being overly sensitive and watering down the discourse in the country with terms like "micro aggression", "offensive" and the like, that these same people who were so outraged by the over sensitive lefties would then respond in the same way when they suddenly felt offended by the comments of a reasonably anonymous individual on the internet. Just something to think about.
How was the elk hunt?
We leave tomorrow night. I couldn't get the 6.5 BRX ready to roll so for now I'm bringing a 300 Win Mag slinging 200gr Accubond for my dad, the 338/375 Ruger Striker loaded with 225 TTSX @ 2760fps for me as well as my 480 Ruger, and then the 458 Arnold lobbing a 450gr TSX @ 2300fps as my back up. I think any of these should get the job done!
I just realized that this got bumped to the off topics section. Time for a new thread I guess. :dunno:
Now I'm back in the Guns and Ammo section. I can't even keep up with my own thread! It must be bed time.......

You should probably just quit your job so you can stay a bit more "in the know" about the going ons of huntwa...........and more time to play with guns :chuckle:
Plus we are down a gun guy now so you're gonna have to step up your game a bit york :peep:
-
WE know your just afraid to use the lil 6.5 ...lol good luck .
-
but don't forget the new hotness..the 6.8x64...

I'm actually supposed to go on a cow elk hunt with Bearpaw at the end of the month with my dad and my son (if I can get away from work!) I'm really trying to get this up and running by then! I won't have a chance to get out again until next Sunday though so I'm running out of time.
I hope you're able to do the hunt with your dad and son. Memories like that are priceless. The fact that you put together a special rifle for the hunt will add an extra measure of satisfaction.

I think you're right! I feel like I'm falling behind on the local gossip. I'll start working on being more blunt and spending more time telling it like it is. :chuckle:

Man that sounds like a smoker! Maybe I'll try necking it up .308 and see what I get! I bet a round like that would stick around for 100+ years!

We ended up canceling the hunt today. Sounds like the snow levels are too high and the elk haven't moved down into the area we were going to hunt. It was Dale's suggestion that we reschedule the hunt instead of going on what would likely be a great walk in the woods without seeing a single animal. I'll start a new thread looking for ideas to do damage control to make up for my son being so disappointed.

Get the Landon special ready !

Yep this was a sign that the 6.5 is destined for an elk hunt!

What kind of dork has a name like Landon! :chuckle: He sounds like the kind of guy who would use green packing peanuts to ship a rifle!

Make sure you don't use bergers they don't work !
