Got a care package yesterday. Some "Gunsmith X" odor to it. It will be slower than yours, seeing it's a 6.5 Grendel necked down to 6mm but should cruise the 6mm 95gr Berger VLD's at 3K. Just got it spun together today.

Don't I ever get any time to get some work done? :chuckle:

So today was a trip out with the 130gr Berger VLD (not the new AR Hybrids). I wanted to run the Accubonds again but I couldn't find any locally. I started at 33.5gr of IMR 8208 and worked up to 35.5gr. I'm slowly working up as I have time and the 35.5gr charge isn't showing any signs of pressure so I'll work up a little higher next trip out. The velocity results were pretty satisfying.

2780 fps with a 130gr bullet from a 20" AR-15. That's right there with a 260/Creedmoore/Lapua from the same length barrel but in a smaller package. This should keep me super sonic to about 1200 yards which means I managed to hit my goal. Next step is to refine the loads and see how well they'll shoot. Groups are in the .5" range with the higher charges with the VLD and get better as the velocity goes up. I'll have to get some of the Hybrids to see how they work as well. The jump with the VLDs is going to make getting really good groups a bit of a challenge.

Ya know a few years back I would see guys packing these military weapons out hunting and just thought there was something wrong about that being a classic weatherby type of guy.

I never warmed up to the ARs until the calibers started to get a little more interesting. The 223 is disappointing in almost every possible way to me. I don't need surplus or inexpensive ammo, it's too small to really hunt anything bigger than a coyote, and I've personally never had one that shot well in any platform. The Grendel/LBC got my attention but still came up a little bit short ballisticly for me. It was the side charger uppers and some of the new calibers that got my attention. I hate forward assists and shell deflectors and I wanted a legit 1000 yard target AR.

I'll always be a bolt gun guy when it comes to hunting rifles though. You just can't cram enough powder in an AR to make it really fun! ;)

Woof :chuckle:

I'll buy it for scrap value as it clearly won't kill anything.

I'd git a tikka in 308. Now that 308 is a really cool new cartridge. Snippers use it ya know.

Great speeds for a 20" AR and 6.5 130's!

May want to up that charge a bit, just a bit more speed. Wouldn't want it to bounce of a Elk at 400 yards and beyond.

Makes the Creedmoor and ar10 look pretty average doesn't it?

The internets have spoken! I'll sell this pile of misfit parts and get a Tikka in 308 then! Should I go with a Barska or Counter Sniper scope on my Tikka 308 though?

The problem with having spent so many years working with over the top wildcats in rifles is that anything under 3200 fps just sounds slow..... :chuckle:

A part of me does feel like I don't deserve this rifle. I just don't think I'll really love or appreciate it as much as I should. It's probably just going to get stuffed in the back of the safe and forgotten about. What a waste really........ :chuckle:

I call DIBBS on the barrel and bolt. Of course that's once you have felt you have abused it enough and bounced bullets off enough animals to realize it's a complete trinket set up.

I offered to trade it for a home made slingshot.
