headed over east to hang cams and just get ready for the up coming elk season. picked up some sheds and hung some cameras had a blast with the old lady put in about 20 miles forgot to take the gps on day 3 but we were at 14 miles after sunday and we went out again on Monday to check one of the cameras we put up sunday and already had a bull on it . just really anticipating the draw results . going in with 14 for quality archery for goose and I couldn't be more excited ! so im already preparing incase im one of the lucky ones I definitely do not want to be one of the unprepared guys asking for help in august :bdid:
-
Very nice
-
Nice, was up there over the weekend scouting too, saw a guy picked up a nice fresh big 5 pt shed. We went to high I think for horns where we were. Either way still had a great time.

yea all I found up high was the smaller guys . the bigger boys drop earlier feb/march when the snow level is still lower so they cant get up high. I spent my weekend around 4000-5000ft and just found the smaller bulls
-
I did some hiking over in the peaches area Saturday with a friend. Didn't see any elk but we did see a bear in the afternoon.

Nice d rock we didn't see any bear sign but saw about 30 elk over the weekend and a few sheds and had a blast !
-
I might be heading up there for a quick day scouting trip this weekend if I can get away. also in the drawing with 14 points. good luck to you man, ill share any notes with ya if I don't draw!
-
The wife and I were out there also...probably a different area though. We were hitting snow at 4500 feet...but there was fresh sign everywhere and we saw a ton of elk down low. Since I just moved to the state last year, my odds of ever drawing quality (at least while my knees are still functioning) are slim to none. It's still fun to get out and get lost in the woods though. I'm hoping my two boys have better odds with the youth permits.
-
I guess 14 points is the norm now for the Goose Prairie archery quality bull. As I am in the hat with 14 also.
-
Been seeing a lot of large coyote sign this year while maintaining survey cameras.
-
Hope you do get the permit. I would hope you would keep posting on your scouting. Make the forum interesting. By the way, I think your sheds are from last year...at least the chewed ones. No snow last year they shed up in the summer range.
-
Set up the tents over there last weekend.

Damn really ? 14 is the norm for goose :/// well that changes things lol I was really optimistic lol . But yea I fully intend on reporting out to you guys a few ones a month if I draw just make it one *censored* thread . I do think one of them was last years for sure . But one of the chewed up ones I know is from this year because I would of walked right over it last year haha but maybe I did miss it but I'm guessing it really is this year . I can't wait for the damn draw results !
-
Point creep is real. Goose Prairie included. I have had one archery tag in 14 years of hunting it. You need multiple back up plans.

Damn and I thought I was getting over eager putting a cam up there in April and again over memorial weekend while doing a couple scouting hikes myself, but you guys smoked me :chuckle:
Put in with 11 points for the archery quality bull draw. Looking at the published data for last years draw results, odds are reasonably good for anyone putting in with 10 points or more.
Went with rimrock as my 2nd since I have some familiarity with the unit from many camping trips and accompanying the family during their general rifle hunts.
What did you guys put in as your 2nd choices?
-
Nice finds. And good scouting!
-
Been seeing a lot of large coyote sign this year while maintaining survey cameras.
Is the state still running cameras in there for tracking large coyote?
-
Okay that's kinda what I came Up with as well average draw is 7 and here giving 93 permits out for goose so I was thinking I have decent odds at drawing but who knows ... I went with wenaha for my second. Just the ol hail marry

You'd prefer goose over wenaha ?
-
You won't draw Wenaha as a second choice with Goose Prairie as your #1 choice. Hail Mary's should always be number one.
-
Yea I'd rather have goose over wenaha . I don't know the blues At all and never even googled earthed it . I know my goose spot and I really want to draw goose and pull a good bull out of it . So that's why it's my number 1
-
colockum as my number 2. I hunted part of goose last year and know a decent chunk of that land well which is why its my number 1. heading up tomorrow morning for a quick day trip.
-
I think its pointless to put in for a tag as your 2nd choice if it only give out like 2-15 tags out if your 1st choise gives out like 85 right?

something like 33% last year and 45% for 2014 if I'm doing the maths right.
-
Your math sounds wrong. It is running about 10% draw with 7+ avg points.

Started at 10+, which last year totaled 36 individuals, of which 12 were drawn. Feel for the poor sap that didn't get it with 16 though :yike:

Sorry. I was quoting archery draw odds.

That is from #2066 EA quality elk goose prairie per
http://wdfw.wa.gov/hunting/permits/results/points/2015category_points_qualityelk.pdf
-
Congrats, thats a good tag.
-
14 pts does it. I drew also :chuckle:
-
Nice dude ! For goose ?
-
Yes goose. Has been my choice for the last 11 years so I figured I was due.
-
Selected too
-
Been seeing a lot of large coyote sign this year while maintaining survey cameras.
I don't like this update.
-
This should be a good thread to follow!
-
Redraw?
-
lol sorry johny but you can come scout with me and hang cameras with me !
-
14 must be the lucky # as I drew also with 14 pts.
-
Congrats on drawing! But (yes a but) this unit is nowhere near worth 14 points! You can draw Arizona easier than you can this unit and others due to point creep. I have 5 points now and will most likely not draw for another decade. It should also have as many bull permits for archery as peaches and observatory.

Can't wait, first time being drawn for a quality bull tag, first eastside elk hunt where I'm the hunter instead of the tag along pack mule. GL to those that got drawn, let's hope that fire season is favorable this year. I'd suggest taking fire risk into account when scouting considering what happened last year up there. I hope to have a few focus areas scattered broadly throughout the huntable area just in case.

A fire would be a great thing for habitat in the long run! A lot of the area (especially the wilderness) is so thick that no food sources are left! It'd be great to see a few fires be managed for habitat instead of suppressing all of them!
The fire last year did great things in making habitat even though it was caused by a human.

I don't know that unit, so I can't comment in particular, but the eastside GMUs do have the advantage of fires. I agree with you, forest fires can really improve habitat. The westside suffers from this---because the forest circus no longer logs in much of the Olympic forest, and because no fires can survive there, and now because they are planning to dig up the fire roads, the forest has become almost unhuntable. It is ironic, but I envy those who hunt the fire-prone eastside.

pd, the bumping unit never burns. When there is fires, the "officials" say suppress them all due to politics. We don't get the big fires like up north does. Next time you drive over Chinook Pass, you will see the loss of habitat I am taliking about. Maybe one day something will go big and it will be very beneficial to elk hunting when it does.

Not disputing that, just pointing out that a big chunk of the area was shut down during the archery season last year. So I plan to account for that risk in my scouting.

Congrats !!! If you have any questions on the unit Im sure we could help.
We offer drop, supplied and guided hunts in that unit.

Even if I drop one on the top of Pear Butte?
-
Yes, in my opinion its one of the best units in the state to get away from people. And yes its thick in places but thats what those Big Old Bulls like. Think steep and deep to get your bigger bulls. You can PM me if you want to get some more information its free.Lol
Good luck on all your hunting adventures

Thursday evening pull into camp around 8:00pm as we pull into our camp area we had a herd of 9-10 in the meadow near where I camp pretty cool to see . Thursday night needed up being nasty weather windy and raining cats and dogs . We just set up the tent made a fire and enjoyed the fire from the tent. Friday morning we wake up and saddle up for a 10 mile day checking the 2 cameras I have set up and setting up 3 more . First camera yielded a great bull with potential and about 15-20 cows the second camera was a big 0 I had it set to high and didn't catch a single thing .... Damnit my fault for not doin a test . We find great new areas for the 3 new cameras and set them up ! We also explored the unit and found a plan b and a plan c ! I couldn't be more excited for September !! Please follow my
Journey to knocking down my first bull !!
-
Nice looking bull. I checked cameras today too over there. Since I'll be hunting general archery my bar is set a bit lower. Lol.
-
Nice man !!! Hey let me know if you get a big boi !!! :chuckle:
-
One things for sure! That little spike would be some fine table fare.
-
Don't pass up the bull you posted! That is a decent bull for the unit. He should be a small 6 by the time he finishes or a big 5.

Ya I hear ya man that's seems to be the script for him a lot of people are telling me he's gonna be just a crab claw of a 6 or a nice 5 . But either way I think I'd shoot him . I just want a solid bull that represents hard work and dedication and does the unit well you know .
-
Totally agree! Things are lining up for you to get it done. Find the cows in August. 🙂

Thad what I'm hearing ! I did get about 15-20 photos of cows on that camera as well !! So hopefully they stick around ! I'm excited for the season !

Nachos, thanks for that. I have always marveled at the glorious view of Bumping after cresting the pass, looking to the SE. That is a beautiful, verdant valley. I am just a traveler, never once having put boots into that forest. But, now that you mention it, it really would be impossible to hunt in there. I fully understand what you mean.

I don't think I could pass him up. Of course I never killed an elk. :chuckle:

It sounds and looks like you are doing your home work. Just remember where you are seeing those elk now you probably wont see them there come hunting season. Think steep and deep for the Bigger Bulls. Good luck

The more cows you get on your cam the better off you are. Come September the bulls will be moving towards the cows. But it's always nice to get the bulls on cam so you know what's in that area. It's looking good so far

Tagging along! Good luck man! Looks like you are putting your time in
-
Nice bulls. You're putting in the work!
-
Ain't crossing that creek fun? Keep your eyes open for sign of wolves back there.
-
woo buddy!
You've definitely put in some miles on the legs to reach and find that wallow, given the status of the FS road that normally leads to that area!
-
A buddy that had that tag last year, and I, spent a couple days way back in there. Talk about elky ground man, beautiful. THey were a talkin the first week of October
-
Keep up the good work
-
already found more spots for us to check out via google earth. definitely will be keeping an eye out for wolves in the area.
had one little bobcat on my cam but no other predators so far.
cant wait to check them again in august.

Hey everyone sorry it's taken me so long to get on here and get my story up . But you guys are all correct my group went 3 for 3 a cow a spike and my bull tag filled . It was by far the most amazing memorable hunt of my life . Many ups and downs ... Opening morning I arrowed a 300" + bull and never found him ... It's a hard pill to swallow but it's need to be done . We got my entire hunt on film planning on making a short film . But I did end up wrapping my tag around the antlers of a 250" ish 7x7 down in the William o Douglas wilderness and I couldn't be happier or more proud of my first ever elk or first animal with a bow period . I want to thank everyone involved in this hunt to the many of you who offered up information or those of you who just supported me throughout the year I can't thank you enough and I hope you enjoyed watching me do my homework to enjoying watching my video to come this winter . Thanks again everyone ! Feel free to contact me future goose tag holders I would love to help !
-
Awesome man!glad you were able to get a nice bull. It's been fun following your thread this summer and to have a sweet outcome!

Congratulations on a hard earned bull! Really liked your pics and the honesty that comes through. Killing an animal, especially a mature, big- game animal, can be a sobering experience for some.

Awesome, Congrats!!

Way to go Congrats. We also filled 3 tags in there 2 bull tags and a cow.

congratulations Jeff way to get it done.
