Anyone watch the first episode of Tradition last night? I was gonna wait till all the boring elk stuff was over to start watching but I got bored last night :chuckle: patiently awaiting the deer hunts 8)
-
I watched it. Wouldn't mind getting the westside elk incentive tag myself :chuckle: Almost seems unfair to bugle in bulls with a rifle in your hand though.

Almost is the key word there :chuckle:

Great video just finished it thanks for posting
-
I laughed when he was in the fog and said you can't guess where I am. I knew the first minute when they parked the trucks..
Looking forward to the rest
-
Cool hunt definitely puts an incentive in my ars to get my tags in on time! :chuckle:
-
Should be good
-
I enjoy hunts filmed in this style. More of a look at what the hunt was like, rather than some of the over edited commercials that pass as hunting shows. I look forward to seeing more of their hunts :twocents:

Isn't anyone else tired of watching guys bugle over and over and over. Like show them doing something else . It's getting boring with every youtube series looking the exact same. Bugles, then a selfie shot style explanations then back to bugling. Rinse, repeat then have a giveaway at the end. Where is the creativity .....
-
Oh yes, I'm following along!! We all need something to keep us sane through these brutal months of the year. After Angry Mountain is over I'll probably re-watch land of the free 1.0 and 2.0 then probably elk 101 series
-
I feel like I've seen a bunch of this footage on a different series.

Same here and it is driving me nuts!!

Because you have..... are you not liking the second viewing of BRO 2.0 Colorado???? Haha

It’s a good video. Looking forward to the rest of them. The shooter wearing romeos was the first thing I noticed. I was first thinking they were bsing about being a few miles in, until the end when they brought it up.

Well, they are Elk hunting afterall. Would you rather see videos of them just hiking?
-
But they are elk hunting all wrong. You're supposed to bugle from from the pickup or atv not hike everywhere. :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

why is the born and raised series included as part of their videos. Seen all those.

I'd imagine because it is their video as much as it is BRO video. Their time, tags, equipment, and editing ours too. That'd be my guess anyways.

Great part about YouTube is you can fast forward. :twocents:
I have honestly fast forwarded thru the Colorado parts that I’ve already seen during LOF 2.0, but doesn’t mean they should t include them or that I like their videos any less. I just wish they’d hurry up and shoot some Mule Deer. :chuckle:

Thanks guys. I’ll answer a few questions.
The BRO stuff was a collaboration. They just released their series before ours. We wanted to edit it with our own twist. We only have a couple days left and we will be back to all original content.
There are only so many formats to film hunts in. The “as it happens”, “over edited and only show what looks cool”, “way over the top cinematic”, etc.... there are reasons this style is more successful. Has a lot to do with YouTube and what the majority of other viewers prefer.
Mule Deer are coming...for all you guys that have life backwards ;)
-
As far as elk hunting, how would you compare this year to last year? Any gear upgrades you wish you had made?
-
Loving the series so far.

Someone asking for deer hunting in the elk hunting section. :chuckle:

I've been watching...some of it is great!...some of it not so much...first the "great" part. I like hunts that are attainable (I don't watch NM bulge hunts that cost upwards of $20,000 or more as that's un-realistic). So I like the "hey we are "normal" guys" hunts and you guys do a great job of this! The realistic parts are great, out of breath, hiking in with buddies, "local" hunts...etc. The video'ing is OK, I think the use of a tripod and sitting on a log and explaining things is way better than the "hold the camera by hand and do a selfie explanation" as that gets old real quick when you can only see the guys face as he talks...I think it's ok to do a bit of "after work" and sit down and talk about it as if it's happening right now, the sound is better and you can present it better, also voice over's are ok too, like Rinela and his show.
Ok, now the "bad"...the WA elk hunt, a guy has an incentive permit, and only has killed 1 bull before this hunt, the guy on the camera literally makes fun of the hunter, a few times, over his excitement of seeing a bull and it's "score"...who cares about the score! if that hunter wanted to shoot a spike the other guys should have been all excited for him, but too much emphasis on a mature bull, especially making fun of the guy. The comments about not giving away the spot during the fog, something like "If you know where this tree is..."...well, yes, I do know where that tree is, in fact a month and a half later I put my tent in your footprint where you had your tent, and that little pine tree you rested your bull on at camp, we used to hang our garbage sack on...I know exactly where you are, and thanks to the fog lifting and the editing of not cutting off the frame a second or two too late you can see exactly where you guys are...though I don't care but my point is, it totally takes away from the video that the narrator is trying to sway the viewer into it's a "secret" spot when there are literally thousands of hikers that hike that trail you guys use...and lastly, since I know I am overstepping in my review, but I am being honest...the lack of hunter orange by the hunter, this is Washington State and if he is using a rifle (which he is) for elk then he needs to wear hunter orange, even during an incentive permit but he leaves camp, in daylight on opening day not wearing orange...sure, most don't care, most will say I'm "nit-picking" but laws and rules are just that and if you plan on putting together a video then rules need to be followed, otherwise it gives us all a bad name...I totally understand taking off the orange after the shot and the hunt is legally over so photos can be taken wearing your favorite brand of gear, but while hunting, orange needs to be worn. (I am guessing that a special use permit from the Forest Service was obtained to commercially film on Federal Forest Service lands...).
I will continue to watch as I like these guys, and I am sure it will only get better.

i wonder if I saw you up there 2 rifle seasons ago? I camped where they did and ran into 2 guys who parked their horses there?

He had orange on. It was just under his coat. I wont judge as I've unknowingly done the same thing. Tossed my stuff on in the morning and been chilly so threw on my puffy. It happens.
-
trophyhunt...I go in there all the time, I've been taking my boys up there for summer hikes since they were 3...yes, 3 years old and they hiked in and played in the snow in July!...I am sure we have crossed each other's paths on the trail a few times.

PS. Lots of goats in there, great to photograph and watch!

Very true Karl...and I know my comments can be taken as rude or judgemental (not my intention), but I was just being honest, if its a video for commercial production then the details matter...he never took off his outer coat during the hunt, even when they were calling in the bull and he shot...sometimes, when mistakes are made then it's best to just chock it up and move on, like not publish the video as it shows a game violation, even if not intentional. It happens to most who hunt their entire lives, a mistake, and not a major one at that, but promoting a hunt for commercial purposes then all of the I's need dotted and the T's crossed. I am sure companies and brands wouldn't like this...poor Zumbo lost his job for making a comment about AR's being used for hunting...now known as "modern sporting rifles".

Oh I dont disagree. I also noticed the orange. You could see the collar poking out of his coat that's why I assumed it was not an intentional thing. Glad I dont have to worry about videoing or publishing anything :chuckle:

They weren't making fun of the hunter. They were making fun of one of the packers, Devin. If you knew Devin you would know that that is pretty normal between his friends. Constantly Poking fun at each other but nothing serious. Devin is one hell of a elk hunter so I doubt he took the ribbing too serious.

Grundy...they also made fun of the hunter when he gets excited as the bull comes in...and yes it is required. Page 6 of the regs spells out the incentive permit as well as hunter orange...which states in the second sentence that special permits still need hunter orange, and the incentive permit needs to abide by the seasons requirements. You only posted a link to the hunter orange on the WDFW webpage...check the regulations and page 6, which also explains the incentive permit.

No, is says modern firearm special permit holders have to wear orange. It also says anyone hunting in a unit open to modern firearm has to wear orange. Neither are the case here. He had an any weapon tag and there were no seasons open. Also, this is what page 6 says about the incentive tag. Please point out the orange requirements.

But you are apparently missing the words after "all". It says all MODERN FIREARM permit holders. The incentive tag isn't a modern firearm permit. It's an any weapon permit. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190121/b38c99d76567220c9eba6d2cebbaff29.jpg)

I'd have to side with grundy. I just always assume rifle=orange in WA but the regs read otherwise

Anyone hunting in an area that is open for modern firearm deer or elk hunting must meet hunter orange requirements if they are hunting any of the following species: Bear, Bobcat, Cougar, Coyote, Deer, Elk, Fox, Grouse, Hare, Rabbit, or Raccoon.
They were hunting in an area open for modern firearm elk hunting (otherwise their hunt would not be legal). It was open in a very restricted way, but not unlike a quality tag unit where we know the orange requirements apply if you are using a rifle. There are some areas that only offer one modern quality tag and according to the above you would still need to wear orange.

As for the hunter orange requirement, the shooter contacted the game warden for the area prior to the hunt and confirmed that since there was no modern season open for deer or elk, no hunter orange was required. The only thing he advised was he may want to wear orange on the pack out as "natives" were able to hunt the area at the time. As for making fun of the shooter I don't know where you're getting that? I was the camera guy on this hunt and in no way was I making fun of him in any way shape or form. He told me in the beginning that he wanted to shoot a mature bull. In no way was I going to call him off of that bull when it came out and he said he wanted to shoot it, I couldn't care any less about scores. I just wanted him to shoot a bull he would be happy with, could've been a spike, I wouldn't have cared, as long as he was happy with it. Obviously people were going to know where we were, there was no hiding it and no intention of hiding it, my joke on figuring out where we were is because it was so foggy and we dealt with fog all but about three hours of that hunt. Yes I know it's a well known spot and I've spent plenty of time in it along with a lot of other people. But like or dislike, thanks for watching.
-
DJ and us all grew up together. We all get along great and if you watch anymore of the series you will see that we all love hunting together and banter is normal. Most of Tyson’s chip shots were directed at Devin and it had to do with all the bulls being giants. We knew what was possible on this hunt and relayed that to DJ but also knew he was going to shoot what he wanted to and we were all for that.

Wait a sec! So you're telling me that a bunch of buddies were flipping each other crap on a hunt? I dont believe it! #fakenews

thanks for the update and clarification Prime Time!...I was just giving my observation/critique and didn't mean to start a "discussion"...like I said, I like the videos, and especially that they are of local guys and "local" hunts that anyone can plan and do (out of state stuff). Maybe lesson learned that a little dialog and "in context" would keep "guesses" from happening. For a home movie obviously not needed, but for a commercial production it obviously helps with PR. For what it's worth, the other films I watched...Idaho elk episodes so far, were much better produced. The way the WA episode presented-with the jokes, dialog selfies, and remarks of secret spots-it portrays differently...I'll keep watching, along with Into High Country and the other shows that are "way over produced." It passes the time until next hunting season.

This is one of the aspects about the Tradition series I’ve really enjoyed....buddies giving each other a hard time!
Those are some of my favorite memories of hunts with other guys.
Ive thoroughly enjoyed the past two seasons of BRO, but really enjoyed seeing the Colorado hunt from the edited lens of the Tradition crew. The overall feel was a little more PG13 compared to the BRO G rated version. Both have their place. I was part of a camp where it was clearly stated that only adults were welcome. I suspect nobody wanted wanted to be held responsible for corrupting innocent young minds😂
One of my favorite camps ever!
Just expressing my opinion here....you know what they say about that...😏

Love the series, love seeing buddy's hunt together and being just that, "hunting buddy's".
Great job guys, keep it up

DJ and us all grew up together. We all get along great and if you watch anymore of the series you will see that we all love hunting together and banter is normal. Most of Tyson’s chip shots were directed at Devin and it had to do with all the bulls being giants. We knew what was possible on this hunt and relayed that to DJ but also knew he was going to shoot what he wanted to and we were all for that.
In Devin's defense compared to the bulls where he usually hunts they probably were giants :chuckle:

Good job protecting yourselves with the orange vest on the way out. I can totally see his concern......

I am a little late on the orange subject but I was told once if there is not a open modern firearm open season you do not have to wear orange. . Look at bear season. If you are hunting bears because there is no weapon season hunter orange is not required. But in retrospect grouse is open Sept. 1st and they have to wear orange.

Grouse hunters only have to wear orange if they are hunting during a modern firearm deer or elk season.

I am watching the series and appreciate them going to the added effort of carrying the cameras and gear to document their experiences, and then taking the time to edit it all up and share it with me! Good stuff too! I like it!
