The Fish and Wildlife Department is wrecking the hunting in NE Washington. Our deer harvest last year will be the lowest on record. Surveys of deer average 43% below their objective for 6 of the last 7 years. Fawn to doe ratios show unsustainable recruitment. We need a 4 point restriction for all of District 1. The economy will continue to suffer. If you want things to change then the Game Commission meeting at the Ramada Inn at the Airport on March 1st and 2nd is the place to make your voice heard. Come to the NWWG meeting on Wednesday, Feb 27 at 6:30 at the Chewelah Casino.

the proposal this year is to eliminate antlerless tags, id imagine that will help rebound the population, i hated the 4 point rule, but then didnt end up hunting northeast wa. in hind site, it sounds like it was actually bennifical. but i have seen and read a lot of opinions on how the 3 point rule is part of the mule deer problem, producing a lot of 2x2's etc. so i def was skeptical on this happening to whitetails too. but sounds like the population is really hurting. i hunted the palouse tag this year with a rifle and to say there is a lack of deer south of spokane would be an understatement.

I used to be against the 4pt rule until I experienced first hand the difference it made in the field...wish we could get it back now. Also agree the antlerless harvest is totally unnecessary on almost all public lands. I can appreciate issues with agriculture damage as well as vehicles striking deer but those problems with too many deer do not exist on national forest, DNR, and most private timberlands in the NE where the actual antlerless harvest occurs..

Yeah, apparently the email they sent out says wednesday february 27th. Its this week. But does 6:30 mean a.m. or p.m?

I'm all for 4pt rule ,And have been a supporter since they took it away .
But for that concept to work they have to stick with it for longer than three years .
If they could keep it forever much like mule deer .once populations rebound they can sell any buck permits, offer youth,disabled,65 over, bow hunters ,muzzy Hunter ,any buck buck tags every three or four years as populations rebound to keep doe/ buck ratios in check.Within just a few years it would really make hunting in NE Washington great .With a little bit of management and time .Now the biggest problem is its gonna take so much more time then if they would of done it the way I'm talking years ago when they had 4pt min .A lot of hunters just don't know what's good for them .WDFW has to make some choices for the wildlife we have .If they do follow through with bringing 4pt min rule back my respect for WDFW will be A lot higher.

So when is it am or pm
I live pretty close to there.

I am assuming its p.m. but it doesnt specify.

I need to make a trip to Valley anyway so I'll just assume 630 pm. Really can't imagine the commission meeting at 630 am :chuckle:

Brain quit working yesterday when I posted this. The Chewelah meeting is this Wednesday, the 27th of Feb at 6:30 PM. The posted notice shows details. The Game Commission meeting is Friday and Saturday, the 1st and 2nd of March. Open Public Input times are 8:15 AM and 8:30 AM respectively. Deer and other big game periods are after l:00 PM on Friday. FYI: In 2014, the last year of the 4pt restriction, there were 329 more bucks (all 4pt or better)harvested in GMU's 117 and 121 (the 2 units with the restriction) then the year before. The rest of District 1, Region 1 had 2 less bucks taken in 2014 then the year before. IT WAS WORKING! Link for GC Agena: https://wdfw.wa.gov/commission/meetings/2019/03/agenda_mar0119.html

Wolves are the tipping point for an already bad predator problem. First problem being they dont "manage" them(predators), they "protect" them. Second problem being guys dont hunt them. 4pt rule works, I live in the middle of 121 and everyone who spends any time in the woods or has an opportunity to view local deer, knows with each year under the rule, deer numbers improved. WDFW knows all this stuff......They are so bound up in misinformation, lying, and ignoring, that they cant even remember their own bs stories anymore. Does should be a limited youth hunt, EVERY other user group should have to follow the 4pt rule. Before all the complaining starts, a healthy 18 month old buck that still runs with his mommie can be a basket rack 4pt as many like to call them, so yes, theres plenty of young dumb easy 4pters out there.
-
Which have the genetics to be special. No argument on more bucks, big arguement on number of settled does and fawn numbers
-
Spikes have the genetics to be special too. Any whitetail with 2.5+ years of age is going to look pretty special to 95% of hunters
-
Well from reading the agenda 4pt min is not part of the meeting .And I purposed It back around the Jan 1 along with reduced antlerless permits. They just want comments on anterless changes .From the looks of it everthing will go to Any buck.anterless permits gone.Maybe next year .I will to continue to purpose 4pt min yearly intell it can be done but it needs A lot more support for other Hunters.
-
I wish all attending the best of luck. I spent many years pleading my case on issues here, with zero positives in the long run. I finally gave up. Again, thank you guys for sticking with it.

I see some of the biologist presentations that will be at one of meetings .When i see there list of goals I think the bottom should be on top that will give max opportunity.

Deer management goal number four is ridiculous, I can’t imagine any area in our state is experiencing this. :twocents: 🤯
-
Ive hunted WA and NE WA to be specific extensively over the last 30 years and last year was the worst I have ever witnessed areas that were almost void of wildlife that just 5 years ago were full of deer.
-
Has anyone talked or know the qualifications of this Sara Hansen? It doesn't seem like to me from her presentation that she is in contact with what hunters really want.
-
The 4 point had improved the hunting immensely in 117 and 121, but certain managers in WDFW hated the rule and were hellbent on removing it.
There is a graph out there that shows how harvest increased under the 4 point rule and how it dropped after managers removed the rule. The numbers prove it was another mistake of WDFW management, the agency that just keeps failing!
If WDFW was a business half the managers would be fired for incompetence and destroying the business!
-
How the heck can any agency mess up on managing whitetails? :bash: :bash: :bash:
-
Skyvalhunter....There was an article in the Spokane newspaper Sun. by Rich Landers entitled 'women in wildlife'. I think she was mentioned in the article. I don't seem to be able to post a link.

"Maximum" opportunity to hunt, not "maximum" opportunity to kill baby deer. 4pt restriction, no change in time line, and like last time, we will see improvement. Couple that with vastly more opportunity to hunt predators and we are heading in the right direction. No cat quotas, over the counter spring bear, separate fall bear tag with season opener of August 1st. All doable, but we're gonna fight over the wolves.
-
Way to many predators
-
Does make more deer. 4 Pt rules mostly result in improved quality per kill, not more kills. Does produce the surpluss. Remove does harvest, improve predator harvest and the problem is solved. 4Pt rules do not make for more deer. 2 pts breed does, 5 pts breed does. There's no strong evidence that does go un-breed, only that there aren't enough of them. Not enough is both a hunting and predator problem.... you recognize they'll only remove one of those from the equation.
-
As far as the chewelah meeting... ive never heard of the northeast washington wildlife group. I did an internet search for it, expecting they would have a website, and nothing came up. What is this? How do they not even have a website? Supposedly theyre collecting dues at this meeting, but they seem to be a non existant entity when i try to look them up online.
-
It's funny how the game department planted wolves in Washington to kill everything off and now hunters want to change the hunting rules and take away doe tags for the youth and elderly people and other opportunitys because of population of deer and other game . it's the game department fault wolves and cats killing everything and the game department doesn't want to manage the problem . I don't see how we the people hunters is the problem the numbers were fine before all the predators got out of control . just saying it's pretty sad reading how people want to take away hunting .
My friend a Wise man said they planted the wolves back in the States because the government doesn't want hunting and planted grizzlies in the mountains so they can close mountains down to people and hunters because of bear attacks . . Witch looks to be true game numbers are falling and and people want to close tags or numbers and last hunting season they closed grand Teton national park for elk hunting do to grizzly bears . Pretty sad the future of hunting
-
We don't have a game department, but the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife did not "plant wolves." Just FYI.

They've been around a long time, I don't think anyone in the group has made a web page, pretty simple explanation.

Our Dept is a political body. That's that. We don't get to vote for it's director. It doesn't have to meet our needs. There's no "right" in WA to hunt or fish if you aren't a native. However they chose to manage, they are unaccountable except to the tune of the Governor and Houses of the state. Who occupies those offices? Only the Natives have any leverage over management outcomes.
Anything that reduces hunter recruitment, reduces gun ownership/enthusiasm and recruitment. Net wins for that ideology. We have no recourse. An initiative for better hunting management would fail miserably because of the demographics of the state. The Constitution can't be amended by initiative. We won't see better management except nibbling at the edges.

You think the wolves just walked here from all over i agree we always had a few . But they were planted to .
I know people that were in the Alpine finding cages that were
Drop in and when they hit the ground and opened and for the West side I know for a fact the being drop all over here I take to a guy he had Know idea who I was at a job site he was bragging he was helping the game department he was helping them raising the wolves and we was laughing how he was going out that weekend with them to drop them off down south .

Numerous people have claimed they know about or saw wolves released but no evidence has proven that wolves were brought in and released. The way wolves travel it's amazing there are not more in other parts of WA already. Maybe there are and they just aren't getting documented by WDFW? :dunno:
-

To be even more clear -not only is there no evidence, nobody with any credibility has claimed they know or saw wolves released in WA.

All correct except Ill add, with no point restrictions in place, where theres access, whole age classes of immature bucks get wiped out because they havent lived long enough to learn survival skills. Running with the does gets the young bucks killed. I live in 121 and for a FACT can say "any buck" leaves few young survivors. Most hunters that travel to this area wont pass on a spike.......They dont want to hunt, they just want to kill something with an antler, no matter what. When so many young bucks are killed, the mature bucks end up rutting well over a month and get run down bad. Prolonged rut can attribute to winter die off of mature breeder bucks.

I don't see any reason why you have to be such a jerk! Your uncalled for comments take away any credibility you might otherwise have!

Does make more deer is true, why is WDFW giving out hundreds of doe permits in 2018 when our deer herds are in bad shape, wolves, ect. That person should be fired!
It is WDFW job to protect resources for future years of hunting. Not make as much money as they can. Then do damage control, and that's what the antlerless dismissal is.The 4pt min is what they should do to make thing right. No one knows what effect wolves are gonna have on deer this year along with the prolonged winter we are having.Any buck tags for 121,117 should go to quality deer permit to make up for lost revenues that the 4pt min might cause.
Does do make more deer , But not when there dropping fawns on a foot of snow. :dunno:
-
The opportunity to hunt would be drastically impaired by going to permits.........you can continue to hunt as is AND allow herd recovery with 4pt rule in place, same as last time........I/we dont want to loose time in the woods for economic recovery.....not supposed to be about economics and shouldnt go there. 4pt rule should be through out region 1.
-

:yeah: Just like the 5 year trial proved in 121 and 117, harvest will drop some the first couple years and then climb and in the end we will have a higher harvest of better quality bucks and with a higher number of bucks all does that can be bred will get bred, a win/win all the way around. Currently it's questionable if all does are even getting bred due to the removal of so many bucks in many areas. At least with the rule the remaining young bucks will get everything bred that old bucks don't get.
Some people seem to get the 4 point whitetail restriction mixed up with the effects of the mule deer restriction. In mule deer point restriction areas there seems to be a large number of mature two point bucks which are never legal to shoot. First that doesn't happen with whitetails, and second if WDFW actually wanted to resolve that issue with MD they could hold a two point only season one year and get rid of most of the mature twos.

No credible person has claimed they've seen wolves released in Wa. That's an important piece of evidence to be aware of in discussing that false rumor...particularly when you state several people claim to know/have seen this happen.
Have a nice day though, I will not engage in further discussion on this thread with you given your inability to refrain from personal attacks and name calling.

The problem I see with opening 2 point mule deer harvest up for one year is young 2 points would account for well over 90% of the 2 point harvest, in my opinion. A whole generation of future 4 points would be non existent. Every 180" buck was young and dumb at one point in its earlier life. And there's plenty of young 2 points breeding a lot of does, but who is to say that young 2 point isn't the son of a 180" stud breeding a doe that's the daughter of a 190" stud? It'd be too hard to regulate what 2 points can get harvested and we can't afford to have all 2 points open season it'd be a massacre. Just my personal opinion.
-
I don't see the need to take out any mature 2 point bucks that may exist. What is the reason for that? I get the feeling people think they're inferior and are somehow detrimental to overall herd health. Why?

Exactly.

Wish I would have noticed this earlier. Got turned around by the closure. Hope nobody died.

My thoughts that I had hoped to share this evening are as follows...
I have hunted these units since the late nineties. There have been ups and downs but mostly downs. I'm not a biologist I don't have exact numbers and buck to doe ratio numbers.
I'm just another guy with a truckload of anecdotal evidence. I may not be a local seeing things daily. But I hunt up there multiple seasons a year, I cut my firewood up there, I trap, camp, and fish throughout these units most of the year.
While there is not one issue to place the blame upon, the easiest thing we can do is to stop hunting does. It is asinine to keep having these any deer seasons. The whitetail deer is such a prolific animal and will always be willing to bounce back but we have to do our part and right now we aren't.
Final thought here. No I'm not the guy complaining because I can't find deer. I always find a few huntable bucks and almost always get it done. But when I hunt the same 3 to 5 bucks each year and watch the surrounding doe population go from 20 to 12 to 6 and then 4, it's time for doe hunts to stop.

I completely agree on the doe harvest to stop, but does this now put even more pressure on the buck population from all the guys that previously drew doe tags now will go out with their buck tag. Is this doe harvest only limiting to permits or is archery and muzzy seasons still going to be either sex?
-
It's actually affecting more of the general seasons than permits.
Here's a screenshot from their presentation planned for the fish and wildlife commission meeting in Spokane on March 1st:

All deer seasons will be any buck for all users .
And yes this will put a lot of pressure on bucks ,that really buck populations are not doing that well as is.
-
it doesn't take a bio to know that deer numbers the last 5 years have dramatically dropped. With the inventions of trail cams and anyone who spends a lot of time running them in areas over a period of time can see whats going on with herd numbers. I have places that just a few years ago were loaded with deer and this past year I was lucky to get a deer on cam. I have a buddy who hunts, shed hunts and scouts 101 a ton and the crap he finds is sad. He was hiking the S fork of sherman creek and found 2 herds of muley does wiped out by wolves 13 in total.

That is exactly the kind of thing that needs to be documented and made public. The misconception out that that the poor little wolves are running for their lives and don't impact the ungulate population is BS

A friend who was at the meeting said there was a huge turn out with lots of hunters joining the group.

pfff! Some of you act like these doe tags are an actual issue affecting the population. Kind of laughable . What’s next? I should choose east or west for deer instead of actually pointing out the real issues!

pfff! Some of you act like these doe tags are an actual issue affecting the population. Kind of laughable . What’s next? I should choose east or west for deer instead of actually pointing out the real issues!
I don't think there is one Hunter that doesn't know predators are part of the problem.Combined with over harvest ,bad winters, west side hunters. There's no way the population can support archery,muzzy,youth,disabled,65 over, all having otc doe tag, then add 325 doe permits last year given out to modern firearm and expect the population to be doing great with animal predators .
AND YES I WISH THEY WOULD MAKE HUNTERS CHOSE WEST OR EAST FOR DEER.

Being against doe hunting when populations are down is laughable but we should take seriously the statement that Grizzlies were planted in the mountains. I continue to learn!
I believe I'm done here. Hope to see some you guys this weekend at the Ramada (that sounds so suspect :chuckle: )

Ya I said it west side hunters.
Not that west side hunters are bad.
When you have increase in Hunter from all over the state coming in the NE units for youth seasons, otc doe tags, ect.WDFW should be setting regs and seasons to protect resources.
So ya west side hunters to have a impact on deer populations in the NE corner of state.

#westside hunter lives matter! You threw out a number of 325 tags. Not even a grain of salt compared to other issues. I just don’t see taking away hunter opportunity an option.

really! Ok, I’ll let my kid know that if a buck ain’t 180” we can’t shoot it. I used to tell him we can’t eat horns. Guess I was wrong

The fact that your worried about your opportunities over our deer herds NE Washington kinda proves my point of the Westside Hunter .I'm very glad that there removing antlerless tags and permits to protect our herds in the area. That was 325 permits just for 117,121 gmu ,along with over the counter doe tags for muzzy and bow hunters,youth,disabled,65 over,That's a lot more doe tags than a grain of salt.
-
Kids can still hunt bucks. Love to see youth hunters with a buck.
-
When the 2018 harvest reports come out we be able to see what the antlerless harvest was.and compare to 2017.
-
Late archery in 101 any buck. See half a dozen rigs a day on major road systems, mostly local and local ish guys running stands in the mountains and on certain plots of private.
Late archery in 101 any deer. Camps everywhere, yearlings hanging, road hunting, ten times as many beer cans. Idiots rolling around in pickups after dark with flashlights.
-
I don't think it's beneficial to blame hunters from one side of the state or another, any hunter should be able to hunt (within the law) anywhere. But, our herds are in trouble and we do need to correct that, if herds prosper everyone wins, even the predators. :twocents:

So true
Doesn't matter if local or Westside some regs just bring out the worst in people.

This is your chance to have your voice heard. Be in spokane at 8am and sign up to voice your concerns. Youll be speaking directly to the commission, and susewind is right there at the table. He appeared to be listening and taking notes. If he was just day dreaming and doodling, hes a good faker. Anyway, an opportunity to directly voice your concerns right to the big cheese. Ramada inn by spokane airport, 0800 tomorrow

I believe Blue tongue was the main reason for reduction of deer harvest after the 4 pt destruction was lifted. :twocents:

For some reason it only seems to go until the lunch break, nothing after. After was deer / elk / moose etc topics. No idea why thats not on there.

We don't have a game department, but the Washington Department of Fish and Wildpife did not "plant wolves." Just FYI.
No, but outside money did!

 :yeah:
Very well said! Ask the old timers that ran our game dept. 30 - 40 years ago. They know what the problem is and how to fix it. The state just doesn't want to. We need the ted turners out of Washington state! This state has become one of the worst states to even live in anymore. Sad! Problems are a easy fix if they would just do them. Fix the "REAL" problems!

The one guy was suggesting we end all deer hunting in dist 1 to allow the herds to rebound....well that wouldn't work, the predators would just keep doing what they do keeping the herds suppressed and we'd never see hunting re-opened.
The one farmer was telling how he used to fence and gate off his hay pile to keep the deer off, but now he doesn't need too. I've found the exact same thing to be true. I've got a pile of hay sitting out there exposed with just a tarp to keep off the snow and rain and there's only two does hitting it. 15 years ago that hay pile would have been getting hammered by deer, no way could I have left it exposed like it is today or the hay would have been ruined, strings pulled off and I'd just have a pile of loose trampled hay. No so much now!
In the 90's we'd have 50+ deer in the fields each night...now I'm down to 2 does that stay very close to the house.
I didn't agree with the anti-baiter at all, the 5 gallon bucket rule is a great compromise and served the purpose it needed too, ending the massive baiting piles by outfitters targeting mule deer. I don't want to see baiting changed from the current status quo, unless it's to allow baiting for more predators such as bear.
I do agree with ending all doe hunting for everyone, we are at crisis levels with our deer herds, sacrifices need to be made.
I especially liked the idea of minimum limits instead of maximum limits on Cougar.
If the harvest drops below 45 animals (or some other number) per year for 2 years consecutively, then the season is adjusted or quota's reinstated. brilliant idea!
Also increase the season duration.
Lot of people calling for reinstatement of hound hunting - agreed! It can be done.
We need to bait bears, it's being done on big timber just expand that to all timber to protect DNR and FS trees from being peeled too, exploit loopholes and get it done.
Also strongly agreed with the feller calling for over the counter spring bear seasons
All in all a good showing by Stevens CO residents, together they sent a strong message to the commissioners....and I wouldn't want to be a WDFW police being named at the commission hearing, a couple guys got called to the carpet :o

(fixed date)
I like Your Passion!.. we need to flat out attack full bore a game commission that protects predators. It's gross miss management buy the state of Washington to protect big game and economy. Sportsman are the reason wildlife flourishes.. Sue the state. It should be law that unless you purchase a hunting license that your not allowed to comment or be apart of Big Game management issues. We built wildlife! We built what sportsman have today that brings billions into the US economy and were gonna let a bunch of tree hugging liberal phucks that have never purchased a big game license in their lives dictate how we manage big game?
Heads need to roll at all levels of our Game Departments.

I've been told there is a lawsuit coming soon, it can't get here soon enough!
The WDFW is probably the most inept agency in North America! :dunno:
Thank you to everyone who attended and gave them a piece of your mind! :hello:
-
Some form of county management is probably going to be the only way to deal with WDFW, an agency that frankly don't give a damn about Eastern Washington wildlife or it's people. All that matters to this inept agency is keeping west side predator lovers happy!
-
Does anyone know when a meeting like this comes to the West side?

Don't forget the commercial fleet and Orca Taskforce.

So what I saw is that probably some of the commissioners would do their job gladly, however I believe the commission is fed a steady diet of misinformation by wdfw. WDFW agenda wont let commissioners wander by individual moral or ethical ideology. They are manipulated for the agenda by wdfw management.
-
From the WAC I have read that I am interested in the WDFW is not adhering to those. Who insures they are held accountable?? Perhaps the tree hugger/climate change governor.
-
I have to say something in support of the commission, they did try to increase cougar tags by 10% or something like that a couple years ago and the governor overruled their decision. Really we don't have much chance of improving predator management in WA until Inslee becomes president! :dunno:

That's a fact but I sure wouldn't want that clown as a president. He would have every murder on parole and the USFW would fall under PETA leadership. I contacted Inslee about that over turning of the cougar tag increase and got no response. Maybe due the fact he sent the Sierra Club a personal letter when he did so and I called him out on it. Another case where its going to have to fall in the hands of the hunters.

I think the cut in doe tags is good but buck management is just as important. If there are no bucks to breed the does, what good does it do to have a ton of does? The buck numbers seem to be pretty bad. You don’t see many quality bucks anymore. I really thought that 4 pt rule was great. You saw more deer and it seemed you saw more bigger bucks.
But before any of that can happen. Something needs to be done about predators. I know we all hate wolves but to me the cougar population is booming and a bigger problem. Everyone I know in the NE has a cougar story. Whether it’s a story of sheep being killed to a cougar killing a deer while the kids are playing outside. It sucks that WDFW is controlled by idiots and we are watching any quality hunting we have left going out the window.

Coming from Minnesota where we didn't have a ton of predators because we the hunters kept them in check have over a million white tail deer roaming the state. We definitely need to keep the wolves and cougars in check and make sure they are not destroying the deer population.

Hunters and trappers can only "keep them in check" when it's a goal of the agency.

The NE WA Wildlife Group meets on March 27 at 6:30 PM at the Chewelah Casino. They hope to have a PA system. Pretty hard to hear in the back last month.

2600+ wolves isn't a lot of predators?

Way too late for that with no signs of being able to do it any time soon......

At the meeting, I certainly felt a few of the commissioners truly cared about the testimony they were hearing. I also feel sure if they carried the hammer, they would drive some nails in the coffin.......but they dont. I also feel wdfw uses them as stooges solely for the observation of protocol.
