I was fortunate enough to draw one of the ten peaches ridge archery tags. Man I’m pumped! I just wanted to thank all of you hunt wa members. This forum has been a wealth of knowledge for me over the years. I was born and raised in the Seattle area so hunting wasn't the most popular subject... my family didn’t even camp let alone hunt. But hunting has always intrigued me. I remember flipping through the pages of old cabelas catalogs when I was a kid, loving every minute of it. Fast forward to 2013 after watching Steven Rinella’s shows I decided to try hunting for the first time. I choose archery. I was lucky and got a small 3 point muley my first year. I thought hunting was easy  the following years I was hit with reality. Hunting is hard. Very hard. But to say that I’m obsessed is an understatement. I’ve been fortunate enough to harvest 2 small bucks a doe and a cow elk with my bow I would love to add a Bull ! Now I need to get in shape. I bought running shoes the day after the draw. I’ve been running and hitting the gym. I want to give this tag the justice that it deserves. Thanks again guys and gals.
-
Good luck! It’s a tough tag. Enjoy the experience and hopefully you’ll put one down
-
Thanks! Now I need to make some time to do some scouting. See what I’m up against.
-
What a year to draw!!!! I've been saying all along that as crappy as it was that tag numbers got cut, whoever draws will be in for something real special. I'm officially jealous. Lunges and squats are your friend when it comes time to pack elk. Wish I could have that tag again.
-
I also think it is a great year to draw. Permits are way down so pressure should be as well. I know numbers are down but I am hopeful for you that they aren't as bad as the permit quotas suggest.
Looking forward to the story. Even if you don't fill the tag please let us know how it goes.
-
If the burn has new grass it will be epic. It may be too early, but that is the first thing I would check.
I can’t imagine being on a knob looking into that huge burn when it is full of feed.
Good luck!

I checked Washington trails association a guy hiked the Norse peak area a couple days ago and said lots of growth in the burn. I think it’s going to be a good year. I will defiantly let you guys know the outcome tag in hand or not.
-
Elk are dumb. The more pressing matter is that buck in your avatar! What's the scoop on that guy!
-
Ha ha. So I said my family didn’t hunt. that’s not entirely true. My grandpa went hunting exactly one time back in the seventies. He shot that monster near Leavenworth. He never hunted again. When I showed him my first buck he said “where’s the rest of him”. Times have changed a bit grandpa. He gave me the rack when I got into hunting. Pretty sure I’ll never get a buck that can hold a candle to that guy.

never say never my friend  cool he let you have it. Dont ever let it go.

Settle for nothing less.
-
A 300” bull is a great benchmark for that unit during archery. Def some bigger ones, but that’s a great number to hit.
-
Settle for nothing less.
Holy main beams!
-
I sure enjoyed my muzzy tag last year. Filter out the noise about numbers being down and give it your all. Trust me, plenty of bulls carried over from last year. Guaranteed
-
Numbers aren't down, feed is off the charts and antler growth shows it :twocents:

Yep. How WDFG can justify cutting tag numbers is mind boggling.
-
I'll be in there all summer working cams for fun.. trying to get a 400" on cam...lofty goals but do able...
-
Congrats, I’ve got one of the other tags. See you up there. Good luck!
-
It going to be hard to pass up a legal bull. I don’t have that many kills under my belt. I would like to hold out for a bigger bull but a part of me thinks I should take any chance I get. I also know quality tags don’t grow on trees. :dunno: See you up there saylean. Hope you arrow a big one.
-
I hope my comments didn’t come across as negative. It’s a great unit to have a tag in. I had the tag in ‘14. Didn’t notch mine, but had a great time. Like others have said, great year to have a tag in hand with the amount of feed and good weather we’ve had. Good luck!
-
Archery elk hunting is hard. You can call in 10 different elk and still not have a shot opportunity because of angles or vegetation. If you aren't very proficiant in the ways of the wapiti it becomes even more difficult. Quality tags don't come around all that often But with that said, be realistic about your skill set and set your standards accordingly. I think that 1 of the biggest mistakes that guys make is setting unrealistic standards. They draw a premium tag and think they can waltz in and half ass it because it's a good unit and then get slapped down hard. Be honest with yourself about your physical fitness, your hunting ability, and your proficiency with your weapon. There are giant bulls in that unit but they are far and few between. A mature 6 point is a trophy in my book. Whether that's 290" or 390". That pic above is a good representation of most bulls around Yakima. Short fronts, main beams in the mid 40 range and usually weak on their 3's (that bull has better than average 3's).
-
Whether you get a monster, a raghorn or eat the tag.............
You should be in for an EPIC elk hunt.
That is some of my favorite country in the state.
Enjoy it......... It's a rare tag.

-
There are some stud bulls running round that country! Your hunt will be lots of fun regardless of the outcome. Enjoy the opportunity as they don't come regularly in this state. You should have some awesome encounters and with a little luck you may get a really good one! Have fun!
-
Green head killer. Didn’t think you came across negative at all. I have just been thinking about my game plan. I was curious what your guys gut reaction would be for my situation. Hold out for a bigger bull or take any opportunity I can get ? For regular season I’m still in take any legal animal mode. I do know if I passed on a legal bull and don't end up notching my tag the wife wouldn’t be pleased. She Loves her game meat. I got cocky last year and passed on a deer first day of elk season. I had a multi season deer tag and thought I would have enough opportunity. Ended up eating tag soup. Thanks for the input guys. I’m mostly excited to get more action and experience. This will be the first time I’ll be chasing elk on the east side. I’ve hunted elk around mount Adams or on the coast so far. i think I’ve been going for elk 5 years now. My buddy and I hunted the Lewis river unit backpacking in. If only I knew then what i know now. We had decent action we were just green and didn’t know any better. . Bugeling bulls all over the place. Next we tried the coast. I was able to harvest a cow. It was an awesome experience. We went back the next Year but the country is just too thick. It seemed like even if we saw elk we couldn’t get to them, at least quietly. I’ll do whatever style of hunt that will give me the best opportunity, but I would prefer a backcountry hunt. My buddy and I have all the necessary gear. I can hold my own but defiantly need to work on my fitness level. Thanks guys for the positive comments.

I do an immense amount of backpack hunting but with 10 tags in peaches there's no way I'm backpacking. You literally have 346 to yourself.

:yeah:
Last year I parked at one of my "spots" an hr before light to drink coffee and listen for bugles. No sooner did I turn off the truck I had a bull crack off about 50 yds away...then his sparing partner cracked off a little further away ..both where shooter bulls. I stayed between them for 3 hours but never got a clean shot opportunity ...

You guys make a fair point.

Be aggressive don't be afraid to call , as said before wind wind wind . good luck .

Awesome tag reed, I drew back in 14 and had had several close encounters with mature bulls, as was mentioned it can take several encounters for it to all come together, I feel you will just know if it’s the right bull or not. Rag horn or not! Looking foreword to some scouting trips this summer, I’ll show you everything I know about unit 346. Wish you the best of success. Talk at you soon

Congrats. Had the tag in 2011. Took Chinook Pass Outfitters in for the hunt after backpacking in several trips in July and Aug and locating plenty of elk. Day two had close to 100 head of elk thunder over a saddle right to an open hillside above my buddy and I. At least 20+ bulls, 3-4 of which were at least 6x6. They were all spooked down into the dark timber by another hunter, but closed the gap on a bull that remained in a clump of trees. Could hear him but not see him. He came running down and into a small opening and skidded to halt 18 yrds in front of me when he saw me draw back. I arrowed that bull which turned out to be a 5x5. I had exactly 0.6 secs to see him and decide to shoot or not. Despite being into elk in July and Aug, when I arrived for the hunt I didn't see or hear an elk for 4 days before the opener. When I had that split second decision on the 5x5, I took it. My buddy never filled his tag.
Great hunt. Still have my entire hunt prep journal. PM me if you have any questions. Chinook Pass Outfitters was worth every penny once that bull took a dirt nap.
-
I have 6 cameras still up there from last fall I'm itching to see what's on them. I haven't had time to round them up. If you're looking to go for a hike and round up some cameras....... Might find some good pics and areas to hunt. Spent a lot of time up there last summer/fall.

This thread needs more horn porn :chuckle:

This should get you excited.

Thanks guys for the info and offers. I will be heading up for my first scouting trip in a couple weeks. I’m going to skip the nw mountain challenge this year to go scouting instead. Only so many weekends in a summer. I figure getting the lay of the land for this awesome tag is top priority.

A little horn porn to add into the mix from my ‘18 muzzy hunt. Wasn’t able to get any on the ground photos seems tho he tilted over directly onto a yellow jackets nest. Not all. He absolutely destroyed the hornets nest with his dying kicks. Hundreds upon hundreds upon hundreds of pissed off bees. Talk about a head scratcher as I sat there pondering my next move.

:yike: been there with a spike my older brother killed. It was definitely sporty :chuckle: awesome bull man
-
I'm just not sure why anyone would want to draw this tag when your odds of drawing a blues tag are way better now with the permit cuts. :lol4: :lol4: after saying that this is the only hunt choice I apply for.
-
Did someone mention weak thirds? :chuckle:
-
More Peaches horn porn. This guy missed the memo about weak thirds though. :yike:

What a silly question.
Do I look like a friggin beetle!!??

Hi I didnt read all the responses so. Calling elk into shooting g range is the easiest method to harvest one . If u wa t some I fo PM me ur cell number. .
-
some good growth this year .... I'm Jealous
-
I hiked into the burn area Sunday. The elk are in there, but not in big numbers. Quite a bit of grass growing in some areas and very little in others. Should be phenominal in another year or two when I finally draw.
-
Headed out for my first scouting trip tomorrow. It going to be nice to get out and see some new country. Thank you guys for all the offers, info and horn porn.
-
Hunt the roadless basins of the west side of the unit. Scout on foot, hunt with an outfitter. If you drop a big boy you’ll be glad to have mules to pack it out. Consider a Montana elk decoy to help with hang ups and practice your “bulls calling cows” bugle perfected by Joel Turner.
-
Does that one picture of the spike happen to be on the left hand side of little Naches Road if you're heading away from Highway 410 down in that Valley right b4 it gets Swampy?
Trophy spikes for days... :chuckle:

Life got a bit busy and I haven’t updated in a while. On my first scouting trip I basically found where I’m not going to hunt. Gentrys post was spot on about the burn. The edges were green but from what we saw the elk have little reason to go deep in the burn area. Saw some sign but there’s not much growing yet. On to plan b,c,d,e. I can’t believe September is almost here!
-
Keep at it man. There is feed everywhere this year. Even places that dry up by summer are still green and viable. You're in for a good hunt

Wasn't up in 346 but hung out in 336 for a few days last weekend. went up on cole butte and drove some other roads. saw a few elk but lots and lots of sign. most of the sign was up high (4000ft and up). only saw 3 others up there all weekend. hunting grouse and scouting. lots of water and lots a green grass.
-
Thanks for the info.
-
Went up and hunted for the weekend. Going home to work a few days then hunt the last week of the season. Haven’t notched my tag yet but got into elk. Called in a nice 6x6 to about 40 but didn’t get a shot.if he came another 10 yards I would have had him. Or at least had a shot. I was shaken up a bit. 8) Chased a few bugles and bumped a few elk. So far so good. Next week will be a good week

You ever fill this tag.
