my hunting partners for this year (my son and his buddy) came by the house last nite to shoot their bows in anticipation for this year's archery season. My son's buddy, Rickey, showed me a pic on his phone of a bull he called in on Sunday. I guess he was out scouting in an area next to the area we are supposed to be biking in on due to locked gates. he was driving into the area and jumped a 4 pt bull off the road and drove past the spot a hundred yards or so......stopped his truck and walked back 60 yards and started cow calling...within minutes the bull came back to within 20 yards from him...he took a pic on his phone but it was pretty blurry cuz he was so excited...looking forward to hunting this area in a few weeks!
-
probably bet that bull wont come into a call now :chuckle:
-
Well I'm buddies with Ricky & I believe there is some confusion lol. Did he tell you the herd was on the other side of the rd. He told me he whistled. Have a hard time believing his stories. He talks like he's the best bow hunter ever but yet to kill one lol. I think he's bs'ing ya ;)

This is exactly what you don't want to do! All you are doing is educating the elk. :bash:
-
Yeah, but I wasn't in my hunting area I was in yours... :P!
Hard to blame someone for getting excited, testing out a new call and having some fun. But... >:(
I encourage those who want to practice to go to the National Park or some other area not open to bow or muzzy hunting. We get about a day and a half of good bugling in my area before they all go quiet and the good bulls bug out to the Toutle. With all the bull hunters in the Toutle this year they just might come back though. I know.....wishful thinking.

practice at home, everybody with a call seems they have the need to blow them on every landing, and wide spot in the road..
-
Aaaaahhh Effff it, let it rip... People say where scent killers and lures and $hit too all bull $hit.. They wont get call shy the first day it takes about 4 days of stiring them up IMO..
-
Got a voicemail from a buddy that did the same thing. Lives not too far from you. Wonder if you were running together :dunno:
Yep thats educating a bull. He will be less likely to come in during season. One of the things I really like about where I hunt. Not too many people want to be there:)
-
Just go practice calling someplace that you are not planning on hunting. :chuckle:
-

:yeah: I bugle from the house all the time and I always get a response from the guy down the road and vice versa. Whenever I hear him bugling I go running to my garage for my bugle! My wife thinks were idiots! I've yet to actually meet the guy. This has been going on for a few years now!
-
I practice from my house all the time, sure can be fun :chuckle:.
Its funny, I have no problem going out and practicing in areas that have high pressure anyway. You should see all the guys running around blowing on there bugles around my place. Last year 2 weeks before the opener I was checking out a spot and had 8 different guys on the road blowing bugles and cow calls in about a 400 yard streatch..... thing is I was right on the edge of the elk within 40 yards tucked away in a strategic location to observe the bulls and not one of them responded to the calls :chuckle: The elk and I were a good 400 yards off the road. Hell they didnt even pay attention. The elk continued to do the elk thing and I snuck out at dark leaving the elk undisturbed. There is no way they could see the elk from the road . But there were some pretty horrific sounding calls :yike: I dont think a coyote would have came in to them. I dont put pressure on my hunting spots, but the high traffic areas I really done care as the elk need blown out anyways before they get poached.
-
Back when I was out looking for fire wood on Aug. 20th. Called in 3 bulls and a herd of cows. I was smart enough to hide and not let them see me or smell me.
-
Bugle away my son, it's a free country. I'd do it, because I'd do it.
-
It is a free country, however if you plan on HUNTING in that area DURING season, it is not a good idea.
-
Yeah its a free country. That's no excuse to be a dumb fu__ and educate elk. Its no surprise he doesn't get anything. That's why 10 percent kill 90 percent of the elk because the other 90 percent are just wannabees. You want to know what is allot more impressive than calling in a elk before the season, killing them on a consistent bases do that then take pictures and brag all you want. ;)
-
:yeah: Post um boys! This is what you get when calling after the season opens, not Before!!!
-

I hate to say it, but I don't believe it. If you bugle once in a blue moon, it won't matter.

Now that's funny right there! :chuckle:

you two need to learn how to communicate with those calls,Like hey neighbor outta beer...have beef sticks :chuckle:
-
My rooster goes crazy crowing whenever I am out back practicing cow calls, or heaven forbid I bugle.... he goes nuts. So guess I know how to call in a Cuckoo Marans rooster now!
-
I think I'll go out and practice my calling now, I'll let you guys know what I hear :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

got a new grunt tube for this year, should be able to reach the blues and all geographical locations in between with it.
-
Green lantern, your post seems a bit harsh. So a kid got a bit excited and called, big deal. If he were out there every day then maybe, no I take that back too, your post is just rude. don't be the internet tuff guy, give some advice and educate others, don't belittle them and call them names.

Maybe he's just speaking his mind out loud just like alot of other people do upon this site, he does have a point! No need to flame. He did provide some education, don't Call In Elk in your hunting Area before the season(education) right there. Besides I hear it all the time the bulls aren't bugling as much this year, they hang up and don't want to come in, they seem to be call shy, etc etc etc. Go ahead and call them in before the season maybe it will save a few bulls so they finally get some age to them and produce a more quality bull in the future, Bugle on Boys!
-
:chuckle: Some of you guys are funny.
-
Internet tuff guy lol. Just speaking the truth.
-
I have no problem with speaking your mind, but why resort to name calling? Does it really accomplish anything? Why not just offer the help and educate?
-
Ya kinda weak callin people names. But "your so much cooler online" I luv that song reminds me of it. But in all reality give your opinion & educate no reason to bash. It only effects the bow hunters and some muzzy guys.

What if you do both, that must make you a real dumb F. :chuckle:
I've called the same bull in 3 or 4 days in a row. Then again I just don't go out and toot my horn, or squeeze my hoochie momma. Speaking of not getting anything for years. :)
I do have to laugh at a bunch of the pre season scouters that blow everything out of where they are going to hunt ...say the next morning.....becasue they don't have the patience to wait.
-
Well, Im off to go blow my bugle some more out my back yard, hope I dont educate too many of them elk :tung:
-
If you are really out for entertainment, accidentally call in a bull moose. Sometimes they don't take no for an answer.
-
Im heading to the Nooksack :chuckle:
-
Im heading to the Nooksack :chuckle:
you are ? who with :dunno: :chuckle:
-
I am going to the Toutle opening morning just to hear the bugling and watch all the cows running to hide they will be scared to death with all those new bulls around.
-
I just called in a Bull Moose, can you beleive that. Sum b!@%ch tried to knock my house down got my kids 15 foot plastic swimming pool all wrapped up in his horns, and took the swing set with him. I had no idea there were moose on the wet side :chuckle:
Theres no elk in the Nooksack, there all in the clockum. All the guys educating the elk chased them over to the smart side of the state :chuckle:

Ok, so all joking aside. When and where do you guys practice your calling techniques?? I know I will have my calls in my mouth quite a bit durring the summer and practice my cow calling but when it comes to bugling I have found that setting up a video camera outside and bugling to it from about 30 - 40 yards away and then watching the video has helped me a bit. It is hard to really know what a you sound like till you do this. I found that there are a few sounds I can make with my voice and mouth that really help out the gutteral sounds, if thats the correct term to use?? ANybody else video them selves to hear what you actually sound like??
-

Where are your pics????
-
I have a a voice record on my Iphone I set up to record and try to do my cow calf and bulge then play it back. I will do some soft calling then some distress calls crazy how much different it sounds from a little distance. I also will bring my call with me to my work since its a large plant cause I drive my wife nuts at home.
-
honestly I don't practice much. I usually blow a tute once in awhile but usually just to get my kids or wife's goat, other than that its go live time. Occassionally while travelling I'll work on a new diaphram.
-
I want my MTV !!!!
-
If you want to practice you can go to Northwest Trek and you can call them for a fee. It is like 10 dollars a morning and you call and listen to them. But you have to be gone before the park opens.
-
I prefer to just call them from the tram! :chuckle:

Only got the tape rolling when its game time.. Far as i am concerned once you get to a point in your elk hunting career its like riding a bike, even though i do learn something new every year, every encounter is a little different.. On another note, i was tootting the horn pretty hard the other day and heard some responces coming from your way... Theres going to be some pretty smart bulls around the house.. I think there going to have there degree with all this eduacation pretty soon.. :chuckle: I can hear Stew off my back poarch and we go back & 4th.. :chuckle:

Just goes to show that every encounter is different, Ive called in a few bulls in my day and only a couple had that mmmmooooooooo responce.. it was pretty funny, I can just remember having this puzzled look on our faces looking at eachother and going HUH?? that isnt a flippin cow is it?.. :chuckle:

Similar situation for me in the Eagle Caps in '88. I let out my first locate call of the morning and get a response over by some other guys camp. Sounds like a gut shot herford. My hunting partner asked why we weren't going after him and I respond, "Those idiots over there are just learning how to bugle." He responds with, "That's too dang bad for a person." So off he goes after that awful noise and I sit down for a snack not wanting to waste my time chasing hunters. Channon gets out about 100 yards and here comes this 280 class bull walking right toward him. Neither see one another. I let out a cow call and the bull nearly runs him over coming in to me. Startles Channon so bad he drops the arrow he is carrying in his hand. I screw the pooch and kill a branch trying to make a 35 yard shot.
We heard that bull bugle every day after that. He never did sound any better. Never could sucker him in again. I tried every call in my bag, but he wasn't biting. He may have sounded stupid, but he got smart in one quick hurry.
-
practice at home, everybody with a call seems they have the need to blow them on every landing, and wide spot in the road..
:yeah: I bugle from the house all the time and I always get a response from the guy down the road and vice versa. Whenever I hear him bugling I go running to my garage for my bugle! My wife thinks were idiots! I've yet to actually meet the guy. This has been going on for a few years now!
That sound fun! :chuckle:

Go meet your neighbor. You may find you have quite a lot in common. You already share the elk addiction.
-
Yea I know! I keep intending on going down and introducing myself. I do know his name is Chad.

This was a great experiance and learning tool! This is exactly what I am talking about, although you guys where actually hunting and try to call this bull back after the elk was spooked he would not come back into bow range to a call. Now picture how many "hunters" call before the season and educate the elk :dunno: and how many guys do you hear year after year complain "the elk are tight lipped this year" "we can't seem to get an elk to respond to our calls"
Thank you for sharing your story and I hope this might educate some poster on here that don't think calling can have an ill effect when used at the wrong time. And that elk do not have a memory!.
