Tagged out with the true spike. It was a good 9/11 for both me and brother in law. Three were taken in camp. Only got to hunt for two days, so I will see if I cant head back to help out Pops and others in camp.
My dad spooked a herd out of a waller, which then blew by my brother in law...the herd lost a spike there...it was his first elk and he was stoked. He drilled it at 15 yards.
About three minutes later, they caught up to my blind and had slowed down, started to graze...I was able to pull back without gettin spotted by the first 4 cows and 5 calves, using a tree infront of me....the true spike was bringing up the rear (with lots more on the way)....settled on the 20/30 pins, aiming down hill, arrow slammed in, stuck half way...he spun with the heard and began to run downhill, but fell over in 15 feet or so. He rolled down hill and passed away pretty much instantly. Double lunged!
So now, we have two elk to get out and its 96 degrees! I stayed and gutted mine, while my bro in law boned his out. My little bro went to help him and me and another buddy drug mine out to the bottom of the hill where a road was waiting. Tossed mine in the truck, dear old dad went up to camp to hang it for me, and I hiked back up with water and more packs to help with the meat of my bro in law. We got his out bout dusk.
All in all, everything went smooth...even got to shoot a rattle snake while we were packing out the meat! So, three elk, down...adding pics...

First elk in camp....my buddy Keiths.

My elk, I had to tie the head to a tree to keep him from rolling down hill!
-
A pic of the drag out...I sowed him back up to keep him clean from all the dirt/debris...

Should be getting it back from the butcher end of next week...Mr. Tuss out on Camano does a great job. Thanks all. Those true spikes are tough to find for sure! Now.....for bear!

Congratulations! About 12 years ago my buddy and I shot elk about half an hour apart, a couple miles apart. We busted our butts getting them out, just the two of us. All day adventure. We didn't have the heat to deal with, so I know you guys had your work cut out for you. Way to get it done! Those are good looking spikes!

Congrats! tasty bull!

I am very thankful for my elk this year...its only me second ever. I really count on that meat (either from a deer elk or bear). The big reward was watching my brother in law get his first elk ever. He hunted west side last year, hiked in 10 miles and camped out. Didnt see anything and the rain kept them pinned.
I was able to convince him and my brother to quite chasing big bulls and come hang with us over in eastern wa (good camping buddys, lots of food, fun chasin animals, etc...who needs antlers when you can have meat!)....bro in law was hunting for three days before he ever got to see an elk (basically, the one he shot). I was happy for him and his family.

Well done! Lots of good eating in those pics!

That is awesome. I had a chance at one last weekend and hopefully will seal the deal this weekend. What unit were you guys in?

true spike unit....328. I wish we could shoot cows over there...the bull to cow ratio is crazy. Good luck Vanderman~!

Thanks Clarence...love the avatar.

You going for deer in the same area as last year?
-
Went back to help out camp....no one else was successful. Had a few misses, but no one connected. I did go back and look for my arrow...found it in like 5 min. I wasnt concerned with it when I first shot, cause it was so hot out and I was sure it broke in half (I watched the elk fall on it and roll down hill).
Pretty cool to find arrows...the head is still in perfect shape.

Good job on some good eats. I used to hunt up there, I love the country but not the crowds during rifle season.
-
Nice bulls guys! Congrats to you both!
-
Looking at the pictures of the terrain and the dust on the back of the rig, I am going to guess colockum bulls. Picture of the one hanging looks almost identical to one I have of my spike hanging about 12 years ago.

Congrats a true spike is tough. I think you were one canyon over from us. I think I saw your camp. I talked to a guy named Doug that talked with you guys. Said you guys got into them. Told me about how your elk rolled over the arrow but your nroad head was good to go. Congrats
