Took a friend out saw 13 deer and saw 3 grouse and friend took one shot at a big doe with his 4 year old next to him and he missed but still out looking for another shot

:peep:

Blacktail stayed home down here in Ryderwood today. Bumped a lone fawn off a bench on a cut, no idea where mom was. It ran off to the next ridge and bawled like a goat for a minute. No help came, so off it went into the woods. Only saw/heard four other rigs out trolling for deer.
There has to be some whitetail taken today.
-
I am blown away. I had to call it quits about 9 this morning and have been checking back looking for pics ever since. Can't believe there is not a bunch by now.
-
:fishin:

This is definitely unexpected!

Thanks guys, it was a challenging hunt in that open country trying to get close. I saw him early in the morning, waited for him to bed around 10, then put a stock on and got a nice 50 yard shot on him.
-
My son Wyatt filled his tag on this Blacktail on Saturday evening. Since he passed hunters safety 4 years ago he has killed his buck on the first day he has been able to hunt(his opening day) 4 years in a row... The first 2 were with a rifle and the last 2 with his bow...
-
Good job Wyatt! Must have great honey hole or superb hunting instincts. Nice three point!

Yes it did, were released today from hospital. Many prayers answered. Was scheduled to have airway reconstruction, and when the surgeon got in there he only had to have some lyranex tissue removed. What was to be a 3 hour surgery was just under 45 mins. God is good.

Forgot about this thread. Twenty yard shot, ran about eighty yards, I shot a little quicker than I should have since he was looking at me. I hit lungs high and back so very little blood trail but completely bled out internally. 180 pounds "on the hoof", heaviest deer harvested in ten years out here.

Thanks
Loki that's a huge BT. Good job. Seems like you are out of arrows?!?
I only had two with new blades, one with last year's, the kill arrow was still out in the grass, didn't find it until daylight. You don't have to carry so many when you are less than a quarter mile from home.... 8)
I am curious to get an age on him. One neighbor gave me a little hard time for shooting such a big buck, "didn't I want his genetics to be passed on?" I told her I was pretty sure they had been passed on for five to eight years. :chuckle:
-
Loki - You got the swimmer didn't you! :chuckle: Congrats man! That's a heck of a buck! I think your neighbor is just jealous. A buck that size on Decatur has been taking care of the does for a few years for sure. Stud island deer.
(then again, if he truly was a swimmer, he probably made landfall last estrous/rutting season and magically appeared in your neighborhood this spring as the biggest buck on the island. Seems like you might have noticed him in the past if he'd been on island for the last few years. -- anyway, I hope I score a buck with that much meat on him this year.)
-
All nice deer's.
-
My buck for the year. Got him on the third evening sitting in a treestand. I have watched him grow up for the last few years. Huge body. Carcass weighed 142lbs at the butcher.

With 7 hard days of hunting, several failed stocks, and a missed shot on a 3 point mulie. Whatcom County alpine blacktail.
As always, great work, Shane. That's a really nice 4x4, especially high country (with a bow, I suspect). The neck is not swollen, which suggests quite a stalk on an unsuspecting buck. My hat is always off to you.

Congrats to all.

Thanks. It was a very memorable buck for sure. Where he was living was just incredible. It's why I like to hunt where I do. Low deer densities, but high reward. I knew when I jumped him he had to be a nice buck. No other deer would live there where he was.

Longbow, cedar arrow. 76inch shot distance. 40 yard recovery.
-
You shot that deer at 76 inches?
Like 6'4"?
-
Give or take a inch or two, I dropped my knife so I went back to get it and took a tape 76inches. The cool thing was no tree stand, no pop up, no face paint, plaid shirt. The deer was under 5 yards for over a half hour. Do not move and breath in and out through your nose and they never know your there.
-
sounds like you should have just tackled it haha
-
I was worried it was gonna tackle me.
-
You shot that deer at 76 inches?

That is just over two yards you know? :chuckle:
He said it was at 5 yards for 30 minutes, my guess is he didn't have a 5 yard pin and had to aim a little high with his 2 yard pin.
Awesome story and way to get it done primitive style. I am impressed that you could get that close.

the deer got that close. I just didn't move. A half hour under 5 yard because I wound not move to draw if the deer had line of sight to me. At one point this deer's ear was about three feet from my broadband.

With great contentedness and fatigue I'm happy to report on this thread. The year 2016 has been rough...until now. It started in the spring when my daughter's cat got backed over in the driveway (It wasn't me). I used to joke that this cat was the best dog I ever had. Always wanted to say hi like a dog with lots of affection. He even lapped at his water bowl. Miss him.
Next, its mid-summer and the wife breaks an ankle and has to have surgery (we were on vacation--in Vermont of all places). Then, a month later, I twist my ankle (same way Russel Wilson did against the Dolphins). Mine was worse. I too had surgery on August 3. I wore a walking boot for 12 days of hunting the archery season on the MS tag. Had numerous close encounters, but no dice.
Fast forward to October (5 days ago). Smoke pole season. My ankle is sore, but just functional enough to hunt. First three days are wet and uneventful. See lots of whitetail does. I hunt a mixed unit of whites and mules. Three nights ago, I stared down a decent whitetail buck at 30 yards. Pulled the trigger and the darn magnum percussion cap doesn't blow (Hawken-style rifle). Buck walks away. Then, last night, I see him again but the smaller base percussion cap didn't fail. I just have been having a bad year and I needed something to go right. Couldn't be more grateful.

Thanks follow r the kind words...... but I've hunted with a bow off and on for 20+ years....I am always so picky on my shots ( not wanting to wound an animal ) so I've passed on many elk and deer. A buddy of mine said to have faith in your skills and let the arrow fly. Something clicked in my old brain finally lol He was right.

My buddy's opening day buck, twin brother to the 3x3 I took during archery. They were together when I took mine. Had still been watching this guy, so after hunting other areas all morining with no luck, a couple does, decided to go look for this guy again in the eve. Stepped out at 6:30 like clock work, buddy made 100 yard shot with the 12ga slug gun and crumpled him.

My dad killed this one this morning.

My 2016 muzzleloader buck. This is my first whitetail, and now i have tagged blacktail, muledeer and whitetail with a muzzleloader.

As requested, another pic.
My first time using the gutless method. I am a believer!
I got this guy 1/4 mile from where I got my deer last year. Last year I hunted this spot for 30 seconds, this time it took me 5 minutes. I have put on many boot miles this season, but this must be my lucky spot.

Seen him a couple miles away with my spotting scope walking through a cut. Made a 20 minute drive around the hills. Walked in and glassed for about 15 minutes when I seen a doe and she had seen me. I kept watching thinking that buck must still be around. Sure enough as the doe walked away and up over a high spot the buck followed her moving into sight. Very thankful for that hunt and for him.

Been after this one for awhile. He started rubbing last week. I had favorable wind this morning and heard something coming. First came the doe, so I waited her out and snuck up around some brush and took this guy about 40 yards. 3 point with nice eye gaurds. My first black tail with eye gaurds, I've killed bigger bucks but no eye gaurds

Old Man Yagers Son got it done Saturday morning. We saw a doe on a side road, so he walked up up the road aways. I parked my truck, was going to walk up and see if there was a buck somewhere, I look up at my son, and he's aiming, and then boom! And then boom again, he missed the first shot. Dropped him on the spot. He's been working nights, so his sleep schedule is a mess, he was like " Dad, I know it's just a spike, but I just want to get some damn sleep!"

That's gonna be some great eatin there

Did he mean in the evening on the opening day?

That would be my guess. Shorthand for evening.

Hey wiskeydrinker, please let us know how that buck scores if/when you get him measured. What a stud blackie!
I am left speechless looking at that mulie......

Wowzer nice buck. Blacktail right?

My 2016 idaho buck. I located a 150" buck the day before the opener, but I couldn't find him after 2 days of hunting so I jumped this guy at 150 yards and decided to take him. I'm happy with him he's my first out of state buck and first backcountry buck.

After 3 days in a tree stand, I had this guy walk by at 9am.

What's the going to post this year, but several people have bugged me about it so I will.
My biggest dink ever. :chuckle:
Not much of a storey due to him commuting suicide by road (http://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,203464.msg2703400.html#msg2703400). , but the pack out sucked due to a not so good first shot. He made quick time going down hill fast till I cut him off before he almost reached the bottom of the ridge. :bash:
Anyone care to guess how wide he is? ;)

Great job everyone. Here's another.

Our group is 2/2 so far, one more (late) hunt to go.
Successfully "guided" my best bud to his very first deer harvest last weekend. The two mile (as the crow flies) adventure we had trying to get on a dandy 3x we spotted ended in two other guys walking right underneath his bed and busting him out as we were setting up for a shot... Turned around and spotted this guy 500 yards out. Lived through a clean heart shot and had to put a second one in him, damnedest thing I've ever seen.
Will do a write up post that includes all three hunts if the next one is successful.

Got him the first day at 8am. About 250yds. He's a 3x3 but hard to see it in the picture. Love the dark color! He was big and fat and starting to rut already. I got in trouble for shooting him through the heart. Lol. I almost messed up that nights meal. :sry:

My 9 year old took hunters ed this summer. We have been hunting hard as much as possible. She plays football so Saturdays are hit and miss. Today on the way home from her game I asked her if she wanted to change her clothes before a quick evening hunt. She said no let's go hunting. She ended up shooting her first buck tonight. Might be one of the first girls to shoot a buck while wearing football pants!

First buck of the season for me. Taking advantage of the second tag this year so told myself the first 3 point or better was gonna be meat. Now the pressures off and I can trophy hunt during late archery season.
The last pic is a little perspective on just how steep the packout was. 1600 vertical feet in less than 1 mile

At least you put some clothes on that poor guy! :chuckle:
-
I finally get to post here! Another last day solo muzzy buck for me, but this year I was (and still am) sick as a dog. I had to work hard for this guy, feeling very blessed! Congrats to all the great harvests so far this year!

Won't be picking those sheds up next year lol

Haha.... it does sting a little.
-
Great bucks everyone. Really like yours BVB. Thanks for sharing. Great job.
-
Another good year T-bone! Congratulations! Big bodied old mature buck with some serious mass! Not as big as last year's harvest, but that one was a rare monster. Do you still have a second tag?
-
Got it done this morning in Montana. I got here yesterday at 3pm, and my deer on the ground by 9am. A great finale to an awesome season (elk, blacktail, mule deer). Now I'm all packed up and leaving for wa in the morning. This was my third trip to MT this year, and I loved it.

Would be interested to try and track a blood trail through that!

150 yard shot, out of his bed. Best buck so far. Very proud of him. Solid rest and time to get ready. Put the shot an inch under his right eye. Never knew it was over. .65 mile drag out cause I'm stubborn haha

Nice one! Love the selfie.

Filled my tag on this meat buck.
Aren't they all "meat" bucks? I don't get the apparent denigration of a buck most people would be over the moon to be able to harvest. :dunno:
Here's my WI, "meat" buck, the smallest body (middle rack) of the three taken while I was back there. I am so thrilled with this guy and more than happy to ad him to the food supply for my family.
-
Congrats Loki! That one would make me happy too. Three bucks in the freezer? Time to get a second freezer.

This is the third for my family, and my wife still has her archery tag. We actually have two chest and two refrigerator freezers, they are pretty close to filled to the brim, I have to do a bunch of canning before my wife gets hers. What a problem to have.... :chuckle:
-
Congradulations on the fine buck! They are all "meat bucks" to me. We don't eat the antlers! Way to get it done, good eats for the winter ahead.

I don't miss much about the north eastern USA, but I do miss the hardwood forests and whitetail hunting in upstate Pennsylvania. These thick evergreen boggy forests on the West side are hard to get used to!

Neat hunt KP!

Thanks for the nice comments. My biggest blacktail to date (the mark wasn't set very high). God blacktails are hard to hunt. I got lucky and caught one in a field but I LOVE still hunting the timber for them. Too much fun and frustration.

12 yr old son's second deer. The mulies (weather) didn't cooperate so he took this blacktail in the late season. He's upset that he didn't get an elk this year to complete his trifecta. What impressed me this year is his stamina, he was wanting to hike in miles for a muley with no complaints, and is already planning some hike in hunts for bear next August. He also is wanting me to build or buy a teepee tent for some backpack trips in during the snows where we cannot get the vehicles into. Crazy youthful spirit!

Sounds like good times ahead for the young hunter! Congratz on the great season and buck

Well my nephew Tanner told me he was only shooting a buck this year if it was his biggest. Well needless to say he got it done. Last day 30 minutes left of season we came onto this buck. One shot from his 300 short mag "300hundo smack down" and he accomplished his goal. Now onto my multi season tag, I think he may of set the bar pretty high.

Not enough for me to count. This is only her second deer. She never wanted to hunt until a couple of years ago. She took hunters safety and got a spike last year. She's excited about this buck and can't wait till next year. I think she's addicted like her Dad.
-
She did a great job. Best addiction!
-
Congrats 1961 on that dandy!!
:yeah:

Here is my buddy's deer he got Saturday near Republic.
-
First muzzleloader buck. Couldn't be happier. Shot him this morning at 114 yards. One shot dropped him in his tracks.

Nice buck scottfrick, what area you shoot him in?
-
Bridge gate side. 10:15 this morning. Stinking still. Hanging out with his girl friend on the edge of a clear cut.
-
Anyone have an idea in GMU 113 for late muzzy? Never tried it, only opportunity I get, as I coach high school football.
Thanks
-
My son's been on a few hunts with me, but this was our first when i actually killed a deer! :chuckle: I think he might go book for GMU 124... what do you think? :lol4: :lol4:

Killed this buck the second weekend of the modern firearm season. 7x6; he has a triple eye guard on his right side and a double eye guard on his left side. One of his antler points was broke off a bit (lost 2-4 inches). Measured 28 3\4 wide, great mass, etc. Shot it on state land, which was a bit surprising too me.
Any guess on what he scores?

I get that its a 4x4 but I'm never scored any of my deer, so I included the eye guards in my original post to try and get as accurate as a score as possible. I would assume they count, but IDK how it works.

Nice buck Tim! How many did you pass on bbefore pulling the trigger?
not very many, didn't count. I had a couple days left but just wasn't seeing much. Not a great year, at least where I was and doesn't look like it's going to be good for a few years. Told myself I wouldn't pass a 170, I was 1/2" per point off. Right at 165. Had a great time with some great friends.

Old mans late buck ✌

How come you don't have a whole thread with the story on that bad boy? I would love to know more.
-
I can do that Jp. Let me go do 8 hours for the man and I will type up something. I did learn a lot on this guy, more to come.
-
so it goes like this, after4 days of crawling around in rock slide country with no buck sightings I decided to head to an area that I've been trying to learn for the past 6 or so years, this area gets little pressure due to the fact that the entire canyon is covered with heavy thick timber. I had been looking at it on google earth and found an old grade {decommissioned} that I never knew was there on the other side of the canyon, so to the end of the road I went, found a place to cross the swampy bottom and crick then shortly found the grade that paralleled the road I had driven in on. there was around 4 inches of snow on the ground and in no time I across a set of large deer tracks and proceeded to follow. well within a 100 yards another set of large tracks joined in, and through out the 4 1/2 miles I followed many other tracks joined and left but these two travelers were on a down hill mission. Soon I started to run out of snow and it was around noon so I decided to find a spot to cut across the draw given it was starting to become very steep on both sides and wouldn't you guess,, the two travelers decided that was a good spot also from the direction the tracks were headed , while going through the bottom I lost snow and tracks all together. And admit lost focus after attempting to go across the crick on a slippery log and getting crazy wet in the process. picked myself back up shook it off and started to head up hill to get to the road I had driven in on to slog the 5 miles back to the rig. not quite to the road yet I hear that tell tale " thump thump thump" and think well there they go. then I crest a small ridge and something catches my eye.... there stand two large deer staring at me within 40 yards! like a newbie I raise up the binos to look at points and dropped them immediately as the lead buck steps over the crest of the ridge they are standing on. its now i raise my .300 wsm and let fly with a 165 grain nosler the buck disappears over the edge and I drop my pack and head up the ridge as fast as I can and behold the buck I had shot at is bedded down at the base of a small tree, one shot to the neck finishes the job , I still had no clue of the size of this guy, man was I excited! short drag to the road. then an excruciating 5 mile hike back to the truck . what a day.
