One of my guides nailed a tom this morning, Utah season opened as scheduled.
-
We have birds lined out in Washington, still hoping season opens after May 4th. The bottom 2 photos are a bearded hen.
-
Spring bear season is looking promising in Idaho, still have two to three feet of snow in most areas, but on the warm days it's melting fast. Season opens day after tomorrow, we'll use a tracked machine or snowmobile to start baits.
-
Another one of my guides already saw a bear out in Washington a week and a half ago on that warmest day, hoping WA bear opens in May.
-
Right on!
-
Sure hope it opens up for you Dale. Good luck this spring.

Always early risers at my place. April 6th

Dale,
Have you heard anything from WDFW about possible seasons?

Dale,

I haven't heard anything yet.
-
That Utah tom has beautiful white coloring. Go get 'em Dale, and May the 4th be with you :mgun:
-
Guide Derek went fishing with a buddy a couple days ago in Montana, these are the four biggest they caught.
-
We've got plenty of baits out, but there's a lot of snow in the Idaho mountains yet, some of our baits are on top of three feet of snow, not a single bear track at any of our baits yet. In some of the lower areas closer to Lewiston, Orofino, or Riggins the bear are probably coming out but many of the higher areas still have a lot of snow.
-
That first laker looks ancient, thanks
-
Yesterday all day we had a lone tom gobbling his brains out, today, I think it's the same tom has a hen and another tom in tow, and neither tom will gobble at all. Some hunters think the birds shut up because they get hunted, now that these birds have a hen they both shut up even though they aren't being hunted, they are henned up!
-
Turkey season and bear season will open on May 5th! :IBCOOL:
We have already previously planned and are prepared to accommodate social distancing requirements, now to reorganize hunts.
-
Great to hear Dale!!!! Get your clients some turkey and bears to lesson the stress of current events.

Glad to see you back.in business!! Not an occupation anyone gets rich at, so loosing any of the seasons is tough. Like to see the Charter boats on the coast get back soon also, they've already lost a lot of business they can't make back up
-
some success this morning
-
Frikkin sweet!! Awesome photos too.

Great pics and a happy hunter! Looks like it is off to a good start.
-
great looking bird and congrats, Bearpaw Season updates are one of my favorite threads to follow
-
Another good one, congrats Phil!
-
This bird looks almost like a Jake, but he was an old limb hanger that's all beat up, he had lost most of his tail, it was growing out again, he had no beard (nothing), a bunch of other feathers were missing too from fighting or from a predator, but he had about 1 inch spurs and good body weight. He doesn't have any worries, he's headed for the freezer.
-
Beautiful birds!!
-
Beautiful birds!!
:yeah: keep em comin!
-
Currently raining hard, gobblers were coming and the rain picked up and they went back into the brush! :bash:
However, guide Daniel had some luck early in the morning. :)
-
two more toms last night, Jeff and his boys finished filling their tags
-
Another tom this morning, congrats Mark, you're tagged out now!
-
That's awesome. I'm so glad people got to hunt at least part of the turkey season this year.

Yeah, for us it looks like we can salvage a little under half our hunts. For the hunters, they all seem tired of covid, they are really enjoying the time outdoors.
-
I gotta say Dale, I see a lot of guide services who just cannot pose their clients and their birds (or bears) at all for the harvest photos. You do an outstanding job of taking fantastic harvest photos.

Thanks Fred, I try to school my guides in posing good photos too, pictures are forever, it's very important to get decent photos, you never get another chance to take the same photos again.
-
one of the important parts of the hunt....
-
Jeff got a twofer, congrats and good shooting buddy, see you next year!
-
I've got room for more turkey and bear hunters, send me a message if you want to come hunting.
I've also done a few turkey maps this week, I've still got plenty of good hunting spots to send hunters this season, send me a message if you need some good areas to hunt and want to buy a turkey map or bear map.

This morning, Daniel said he walked right by a flock of birds, they were putting and on high alert, I'm sort of surprised he didn't try to catch one.

Keegan with her first turkey, great shot!

Daniel got this Tom about an hour ago!

Our first two Idaho bear hunters last week cancelled due to covid travel quarantine restrictions where they work.
Doug and Kathy are our first two Idaho spring bear hunters. Doug and guide Brian chased a big bear with the hounds on the first morning of the hunt, it was a big mean boar that wouldn't tree, Brian managed to catch the hounds when the bear crossed the road headed for big country, one of the hounds had gotten beat up pretty badly by the bear but is already recovering well. Kathy who was hunting with Brandon passed a small bear the first morning and then passed a little bigger bear in the evening. On the second morning it was raining hard so nobody hunted. On the second evening Doug nailed an average black boar with guide Brandon, nice shooting Doug, you tagged our first bear of our season, congrats!
-
Awesome. Glad to finally start seeing some bears hit the ground. Too bad they could not catch up with that old boar. I would’ve love to see a picture of him

So, fishing guides have to wait until May 15 before they can take clients and turkey guides can guide hunters now? I was under the assumption that all fishing/hunting guides had to wait until May 15 here in WA?
Not any kind of attack meant, but what's the official "rules" these days for guides with this ridiculous covid pandemic?

The rules in WA are pretty clear, guides and guests can't travel in the same vehicle or boat, we haven't been able to feed guests indoors, and we must maintain social distancing. We comply with all these. Each guest or family has their own cabin, each hunter follows the guide with their own vehicle, we don't hike or sit close to guests when hunting, we enhanced our sanitizing/cleaning, we ordered take out platters and utensils, we take meals to our guests cabin, set the meal down, knock on the door, guests pick up their meals and eat alone.
In Idaho we also have direct guidance from the state for operational procedures which we are following.
Thanks for your sincere concern for our well being!
-
FYI: The way I read the rules, fishing guides could operate if they had their guests follow in a different boat so that social distancing can be maintained, otherwise they would need to wait for the next phase of reopening.
-
Daniel drew a WA spring bear tag, he hunted yesterday morning and found a ton of good bear sign in one of our usual spots. He went back this afternoon and nailed this nice off-color bear with one shot at 250 yards. Great shot, congrats Daniel, that bear is going to make a beautiful rug.
-
Well, that's some positive news that at least you can operate at some level.
-
We prefer to provide a lot more service than we can now, but in order to operate we had to modify and scale things back. The hunters have been very understanding and happy that they can finally hunt and it hasn't seemed to hurt their success.
-
Bob passed several birds waiting for the one he wanted, finally the right bird made the wrong move and came right to Bob giving him the opportunity he had been waiting for, whammo, three year old tom down, nice going Bob!
-
Whammo that is a nice bird

Well that gets me excited. Loading up the truck and headed north for 4 days for bears. Can't wait!
-
Yea, some nice bears hitting the ground!!!
-
Kathy had passed some black bear hoping a nice off-color bear would show up, sure enough her patience prevailed, she nailed a nice off-color boar on the third evening of her hunt. He's wet which makes him look black in the photo but he's actually chocolate colored. Congrats Kathy, well done!
-
Story please
-
Nice!!!
-
Billy nailed a killer old Merriam’s Tom with some dandy 1 1/4 spurs and a double snood, the first double snood we have ever taken. Nice going Billy, awesome bird! :IBCOOL:
-
Dale do you think that the double snood could be from people spraying herbicides? Similar to the hoof rot on elk?
-

Not on this bird, he came from a large private property that almost never has used chemicals/herbicides. I think it's just a fluke of nature on a big old bird.

Another Bearpaw First!
Suited Up! A sign of the times! Another brown fowl down! Thanks guide Ray for keeping everything in perspective! :IBCOOL: :chuckle:
-
You gotta have at least one photo commemorating this crap show.

JG hammered a dandy Tom and then filled his second tag with a Jake on the last day of his hunt.
-
Beautiful bird!!
-
Lars with a nice looking Merriams Tom. Birds are really breaking up and becoming less predictable, many hens are sitting nests and the hens that are not sitting don’t appear to be as big of attraction now. Gobbling has been less, but there are still some birds gobbling.
-
Bob hammered the nice Tom he wanted after passing several other birds, congrats Bob!
-
Rush drilled another longbeard, nice job buddy!
-
Got set up close to a roost this morning, on some sloping ground, there were 9 toms here last night so we were pretty pumped. Pretty soon the first Tom started gobbling, oh yeah! 5 minutes later the hens started going off. We had to sit in fairly open spot to get a good view of where I thought the birds would come down. Two hens come off but sailed way out into the field behind us, next a hen landed 70 yards in front of us, suddenly one of the toms landed 25 yards right in front of us.
We waited, Hoping another Tom would land, but the Tom was slowly strutting his way towards the hen away from us, finally we decided to take the Tom before he got too far out, whammo, big Tom down.
The other birds went out into the field, there is another big Tom with them so we are waiting to see if we might get another chance.
-
I almost forgot the best part of the story, when he shot he went over backwards in the chair, the ground had a little too much slope! I told Jerry I sure wished I had a video of that, he said he didn’t need one, he’ll never forget that! :chuckle:
-

It was a short, swift, but very successful turkey season, I missed posting a few birds that I didn't get photos of, and we had a lot of cancellations but I feel blessed that we had a good half season.
This bird finishes off the turkey season for us, our last two hunters passed a bunch of jakes, sacked up three long beards in two days, and headed for home, thanks guys, hope to see you next year! :hello:
-
Nice bird! Glad you at least got a few guys in for the season Dale! Hoping this fall will be better.....for all of us!
-

Yeah, I'm just trying to pay the bills and keep the guides employed so I don't lose any of them. I think we'll have a good fall season, hunters are booking hunts again. We've actually used the time down to finish some projects and start others. I started a shop a few years ago, we got the roof on it and filled it up, we never seemed to have time to get it completely finished and reorganize everything, nice to have it actually completed now.
I've been hearing some ugly rumors of all types of businesses that probably aren't going to reopen, I really feel bad for people who had thriving businesses that were suddenly destroyed so quickly and even longtime businesses that are in danger of failing. For every business that fails numerous employees are left jobless too, sure hope this can all turn around soon for everyone's benefit!
-
Amen!!!!
-
Robert went to the Bearpaw candy strore and got himself a sweet chocolate bear! Nice going Robert, congrats!
-
Ian nailed another nice chocolate boar with guide Daniel, good job Ian!
Ian's father killed another black boar the next day and they headed home, I'm still waiting on photos of Charles' bear but will post when I get them.
(Sorry about the poor quality photo!)
-
Yesterday guide Derek dropped a nice black boar in Idaho, nice work Derek!
-
Outstanding!
-
David nailed a nice chocolate bear to go with the black one he killed last year with us. Good going David!
-
Guide Zach and Otis with his first bear ever, a decent one too. Congrats Otis!
-

There's a photo of a sow with three little cubs, one of the cubs is on top of her back, I tried to find that photo but misplaced it, if i see it again I'll post it, it's pretty cool.
-
Awesome!
-
Still can't find the cub on top of mom, I'm pretty sure we got this bear yesterday. I don't have the success photo yet.
-
We are almost done for the season, but I'm still hoping we get this bugger before season ends! He's only 30 yards from the stand in broad daylight!
-
A different bear family, cute little fellas!
-
That’s a cool picture
-
Some serious hair loss on this bear, more than usual, maybe lice, not sure?

This is a pretty decent bear, this is one we've been trying to get.
-
Hey buddy get outta here, wrong season!

Did this little fella find a blow dryer or an electrical outlet?
-
Ooops, candid camera... almost didn't post this and may decide to remove it?

I've shot quite a few mangy coyotes when i used to coyote hunt a lot, the mangy areas usually had no hair, I don't think it's mange for that reason, but obviously I have no way of knowing for sure.

Siamese Twins?
-
Half of the bears I had coming to the bait had even less hair than that guy, some were practically naked! :)
Hey hey, that's not the bait barrel hole!!!
:chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
There is nothing wrong with that photo. :twocents:
