4x4 velvet mulie. 62 yard uphill shot.Went 80 yards piled up in a dry creek bed in less than 2 minutes. My biggest so far :IBCOOL: 178 lbs at the butcher prob every bit of 230 on the hoof. Kinda of a bad shot think my arrow hit some brush and deflected a bit went high left but still cut a major artery massive blood trail can't say enough about the shuttle t's.

Two days of hunting and have only seen one deer, usually seeing at least a handful everyday. Hope it's just the heat, good luck to everyone with a tag and congrats to the few who've already moved theirs.
-
On my way to help my son pack out a blacktail. First time bow hunting. I'll post a pic. Kind of sad he's gone solo but super proud he's out doing it on his own

Meat buck but I’m not picky with a bow and couldn’t pass up a blacktail in velvet. Short season was bittersweet but the sneak I had to put on this guy through the noisiest of clearcuts with the wind shifting multiple times and two spikes bedded around him made the challenge exciting. Quartered you’re me on first shot so exit wound pictured above was far back. Able to get a second arrow in him and end it for good. 55 yards.

Nice one, that heat was brutal and not much was moving at my place. Congrats
-
Opening day buck! Shot him quartering towards me at about 10 yards and ran no more than 50 yards. Couldn't be happier to fill my tag!

Nice job everyone so far 👍

Thanks! And oh yea there was so little movement on my cams and just in general. If you have more time up there my bro did see the two five by fives up a but higher when he was looking for grouse.

Good to see a few bucks hitting the dirt! Nice work fellas.

This is looking great so far! Thanks for sharing everyone!

One of my target bucks hits the ground, super stoked and yet very remorseful, I look forward to a long season, but usually wait until the end of Archery to purchase my multi season tag. But this year they sold out day one. So now the Ducks better beware. Have a great and prosperous season.
-
Great deer so far everyone! So glad it's FINALLY season!

posted on the opening day thread. I believe this is his shed, got quite a bit of footage of him this summer too.

Heck of a blacktail mallardmasher !!! Good job

That’s cool finding his shed

Anya shot her first deer in 2018 at my dad's house in Walla Walla. She had opportunities last year there but no bucks and she didn't want to shoot a doe that might have a fawn. Up here in Spokane she missed a couple of shots so no deer her second year hunting. This year she was ready! 30 minutes in the blind and this fella fell to her arrow (it's good to hunt at grandpa's!)
Finally got to use the knife I made her!

I was lucky enough to have my son in the blind with me on this hunt. Nice little tender buck. Great shot, quick kill, and easy pack out. The boy was super excited. Now its time to find an elk. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200914/31dae0e8bf6a431a8cf7044770daf3d3.jpg)

My buddy got it done today with his little boy in the blind. His biggest buck to date and just the type of buck he dreamed of having for his first wall mount. Little bit of junk on both sides. Nice to see some deer dropping. Congrats to everyone
-
There are bigger deer running around my hunting area (see the 5x6 and 5x5 in the Target Buck thread), but I couldn't pass up a 15 yard chip shot on this nice 4x4. 100 grain RAD broadhead on an Autumn Orange FMJ fired from a 2015 Martin Lithium LTD with a MBG Accent Whitetail sight and QAD rest made for a 35 yard recovery after slicing through both lungs. I got it on video but it's pretty dark (FIRST thing in the morning on Sunday the 13th).
And my deer loading platform worked GREAT! No more struggling to load a deer solo!
-
Nice job on all the recent additions. Keep them coming!

Nice deer congrats  That's how i used to do my solo loads now i strap the deer to a spine board and use a warn 2000 portable winch chained to the front load hooks on my truck so much easier pulls them rite in.

backstory:
I had set aside Fri-Tues for the high hunt. Free of family and work obligations, my only choice was where to go. I had narrowed it down to 2 places. Both I had been to several times. My first choice was a spot that usually has *some* game, and I'd shot a bear there before. I'd always seen deer there, just no legal deer. The second was a spot I knew had deer, but the last time I went there was flagging going down the creek bottom until close to the access trail, a clear sign that other hunters knew about it. Would they be there at the opener, and no deer would be left. The weather was better at the second spot, but even though I knew I'd be fighting the fog and rain I went for spot #1. Figured I'd have a good chance at a bear, and a buck would be an outside chance but a possibility.
Drove my kids to YMCA Fri morning, and headed up to the trailhead. Made fairly quick work of the 9 miles in. At the 6 mile marker I could have tried a stalk on a bear I saw about a mile away but was running low on water, I hadn't set up camp, it was a few hours until dark, and there was a storm coming in. So decided to 'save it for the next day' and make it until camp (9 miles in). I half expected some guys with stock to be up there, but they weren't... but there was another fella in the camp spot I wanted to take. But he was an awesome sport and we shared the area. Then the fog rolled in, like 100 yd visibility. We each headed in different directions to stake a spot for a dusk hunt, but it was terrible. Visibility alternating between 40 yards and 120 yards, maybe. Nothing doing.
Day 2 we each started the morning in similar areas. Me up on a ridge, him on a bench. Visibility was terrible again, and worse higher up where I was. My fateful partner saw a few does feeding up and bedding in a meadow. I saw nothing but wet blueberry bushes, fog, and bear *censored*. After that morning, I headed to camp and grabbed a cup of coffee, bailed out my light weight 1 man tent, and headed east towards some promising blueberry meadows...they looked promising for bear anyway which I figured at this point was my most likely option. But, nothing. 10 miles logged that day. Headed back to camp, I felt dejected as the fog bailed in even more. All day, it was 100-400 yard visibility...mostly on the 100 side. And it seemed to be getting worse. And I kept thinking about the bear I'd whimped out on the day before. Would that be my only opportunity this trip. Maybe I'd just skip the dusk hunt, and drink the mini gatorade bottle I'd refilled with tequila? But, despite the loud sound I was making through wet blueberry bushes brushing against my rain pants, I habitually slowed down as I came into one of the last small meadows before camp.
Holy crap! There was a wide body buck just there staring at me broad side, 80 yards away! Just guessing because I lost my range finder earlier that day, but he looked huge. I had a judgment call to make. Just looking at me, there was no way to tell how many points he had on either side. But, judging from his large body, and how wide his antlers were, I knew he was a mature buck. For the first time in my life, I shot without ascertaining his point count (I've passed up many a buck for this very reason). It was a poor shot, really. I did go down to a kneeling position, but rushed it for sure. The shot went off, and as he wheeled and seemed to stumble I was confident I'd hit him, but not how well. I waited for a few minutes, but cognizant that I had a few hours until sundown I slowly headed up to try to track him. I saw a few recent tracks in the direction he went, and found a leaf with a flea-sized speck of blood. Okay, he's hit, I thought. Then another 10 feet and another flea-sized speck of blood. At this rate, I could be in for a long trail. And it had started to rain.
At that point, I searched for the next likely path. And noticed a ghost-white buck to my my left, seemingly hiding under a fallen tree to my left. He gave out one last dying breath and was done. Yes!!
I'll spare some details on the rest of the story, but those who've done this know it was when the real work began. My newfound hunter friend helped process the deer, which was a big help. Comraderie in the field! I'm no stranger to schadenfreude on high buck, but that's awesome when you can get each other's back. The next day after I boned out the meat (and he helped me with the sawing off the skull cap with my tiny saw), we parted ways. I took a whole pack (camp + meat) about a mile and a half until the first big incline, then ferried meat the rest of the way over that day and the next. I stupidly tried a stock on the bears (now two) in the field I'd seen earlier. I smelled like deer blood and jungle rotted feet, the air wasn't moving, and I crashed through brush and berry bushes and had to do the "veggie belay" often with poor results to get there. Needless to say the bears were gone when I got there, but at least I know a better route next time. Glad I didn't have another long round trip of carrying meat the next day. Having enough trouble walking today as it is!
Thanks for listening. Well, reading really. Over and out.

Great buck. I still am not sure if you were actually up where you said you were or if you were trolling, but whether you were actually in there or not, you can bet on the internet rangers being in there next year. So you either blew your own spot, or someone else's. Either way, probably not a good decision. But congrats on the successful hunt.

Well onewhohikes that’s a stud buck congrats!

I got my first deer this year. I am a second year archery hunter. Put in a lot of time last year but ended my season with lost a blacktail after what I thought was a perfect shot. After playing that over and over in my head all year I told myself I wouldn't take anything but a perfect shot at 30 yards or less.
I woke up before first light and started hiking with my hunting partner. We saw 2 white tail doe about a mile from camp about 100 yards out but we spooked them off. My partner wanted to chase them but i knew they were long gone so we split up. I continued around an area I have seen deer in and came across another hunter that pointed out 2 does and 2 small non-shooter bucks. I told him thanks and that I didn't want to mess up his hunt so I would be on my way. He laughed and said he wasn't after a doe and insisted I go after the bigger doe of the group. We chatted for a few minutes as we watched the deer make their way through a field of sage brush. We made a plan to pinch them out of the brush so I could get a shot. We ended up bumping the deer onto the next hill side. Him being a vet hunter said never chase a deer, wait and wait and slowly follow or if you have a good idea where they are going try to cut them off. So I waited a half hour and started hiking to an area I thought them may have headed. Sure enough they were only a few hundred yards away and I was able to get within 100 yards no problem. Closing the remaining distance took me nearly 2 hours of slowly creeping closer and closer, the deer had me made but I figured if I moved slow they wouldn't see me at a threat. I got within 40 yards but had a ravine and too much brush in my way. I backed out and got onto their side of the ravine just as they headed over the ravine again. This time they were a little more in the open and i got right to 30 yards when the small bucks decided they didn't want anything to do with me. I thought it was over, but then the bigger doe took a step up hill, perfectly quartering away and 30 yards on the dot. I drew my bow, held it there for what seemed like for ever, going through my mental checklist, making sure there would be no regrets letting the arrow fly no matter the result. Boom I hit the release and hear a thud and the deer is instantly crashing down the ravine. Tries to get up and makes 10 ft before it's back down. At this point my heart is pounding and I am in disbelief that I have a deer down just 40 or so yards away. Still worried it might get up and run I quietly wait 15 - 20 minutes, finally go check and she is dead.
What an experience it was. I am so happy to have the vet hunter point out the deer and give me the advice he did. i think talking him put me in the exact calm calculated mind set I needed. Got through the field dressing fairly quickly, i did accidentally pop the stomach and have a nasty puff of stomach gas go right into my face. No spillage or spoiling of the meat though. Got the deer back to camp, got her skinned and sitting in a game bag. Started getting worried about the 80 degree day so decided to quarter it and get it on top of some ice in my coolers. Went from shot taken to fully put away in the coolers in less then 3 hours.
I have 35 pounds of steaks and stuff to grind along with 10 ish pounds of trimming I cooked to mix in with the dog food.
I am grateful to have had this opportunity and have my first deer under my belt. Now to next year and hopefully a buck.
-
Congrats on #1 PNW

Palouse whitetail buck, young 4x4. I sat for the opening evening of muzzleloader season in a draw with ponderosa pines and hawthorns. A doe and fawn wander through, and I just enjoy the experience. Twenty minutes later, this young buck comes through and grazes in a wet meadow area in the bottom of the draw. I watch him for five or six minutes, looking at him through the binoculars to ensure he is legal. He turns and heads up the draw, gradually trending broadside. When he comes to about fifty yards, I stop him with a mouth grunt, and let the bullet fly. He runs fifty yards and falls into a brushy draw. He has a very large body for his age class- I am sore from packing him out! Grateful for the meat for winter.

Opening morning mule deer.
100 yard shot. Deer is still in velvet. Is that odd?
-
Opening morning my 15 year old daughter passed three legal bucks hoping for a bigger one. We put the stalk on a big 3x3 but just couldn’t get close enough for a shot. It was 11am and I asked if she wanted to go back for lunch or take another look at the deer we had passed. She decided to go take one more look. We found the biggest of the three still in the same basic spot. Earlier he was at 79 yards broadside and then bed down at 84. I was shocked she passed him and now he was 140 yards away.
We decided to sneak around above him. We got to 60 yards but only could see his horns. He spooked and ran downhill with three does in the lead. They stopped at 100 yards but were all bunched up, no ethical shot. They started to slowly move to the right. The first doe stepped into the opening at 126 yards. We setup for the shot and the buck had read the script. He followed the does on the same path and paused in the opening. She settled her knight bighorn loaded with Leigh 230 grain .45 caliber bullets suggested by @Sabotloader , thanks man, squeezed the triggered and flipped the buck over. Dumped him right there. All of the points are are over an inch so we are calling it a 3x4.

Well I have gone back and forth on posting this but figured what the hell im not to concerned about being judged. I finally got it done with my bow on one of the nicer deer I had been seeing. Unfortunately that day we had terrible thunder storms. As the group of bucks worked down the hill towards me the thunder started. Then sprinkles of rain, which we hadn’t had for months. Soon it was a torrential downpour and although the thunder had the four bucks on edge they were still feeding and heading my way. As always the biggest in the group was last in line. I had a tall narrow crab claw four point at 10 yards but could see the bigger buck was going to come by on almost the same trail. After being at full draw twice and not being able to get the angle I needed the big buck finally turned broadside at 26 yards. As I struggled to get my aim in the pouring rain I let my arrow fly. He flinched at the shot and I hit him higher and further forward than I wanted, but watched the arrow disappear into his shoulder. I only waited a few minutes for the other bucks to clear the area as they were trying to figure out what happened. I found a few spots of blood, no arrow and within minutes the blood I had was gone. Soon there was standing water and even the tracks were washed away it was raining so hard. I grid searched all day. Could not come up with anything. He went right into a creek bottom that was thick with hawthorns and all kinds of brush That was over your head. I crawled around on every bear trail in there and could not find him. I went home dejected and almost in disbelief that I had watched the arrow get great penetration but couldn’t find him. Going back to look even though knew the meat was a loss at this point I saw a huge bear, too far to shoot without a rifle. I dropped down the hill and covered ground to get closer. As I peeked over the hill again he was going into the brush, right where I had been looking for my buck. He had a beat down trail going in and after more looking found where he cashed my deer he ate. I had been less than 20 yards from it when I was looking but it was just so thick you couldn’t see it unless you tripped over it. So no meat to show but I am tagged out on deer for the year. Definitely a bitter sweet ending, must have only got one lung since he went 300+ yards through thick terrain. But at least he’s not still out there suffering and the bear got a good meal.

Bummer man! looks like it was a nice buck. Way to stay positive and and keep at it until you found it!
-
Glad you went back after him. Sounds like that bear didn't waste any time getting on him. Never fun to lose animal for sure.
-
:yeah:
Glad you were able to find him.
-
Not the type of success you hoped for but hey, you tagged your deer and fed next years target bear in the process. Thanks for sharing
-
Good story, sad ending. Thanks for sharing your bad luck with us. The hunts don't always turn out perfect, despite our best efforts.

Way to stick with. Now go back and shoot the bear that way when you eat the bear it somewhat be eating your deer also 😂

Had a good 2 days with the daughter and her guy on a muzzy hunt. First muzzy buck for her, and second deer ever for him. After hunting the entire archery season and seeing very few bucks myself........turns out I am a better "guide" than hunter. :chuckle: :chuckle:

Awesome way to get it done Nock! Thanks for sharing!

Second Day of muzzy

Nice job all! Congratulations on your successes.

Got this guy on third day of muzzy season. I was fishing when my buddy saw him across the river. I took the canoe over and met him face to face at 20 yards! He walked into some timber and up the hill. Ranged him at 56 yards and dropped him! My buddy and I threw him in the canoe and got him back to camp.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201002/538a73da6face61a58c5810f51e57ca6.jpg)

100 yards 54 cal. 2:00 pm. My dad was just trying to give me some tuna belly he smoked as I was finishing my granola bar, was just about to reach into the bag and he says “big buck right here in front of us!” I could not see it due to me kneeling, also we where behind the only sage brush up on a high spot. Just by the look on his face I thought I better get ready! I threw my vortex down in the sand🤪 and peaked around the sage getting ready to call his bluff only to see this buck and a 2 pt less than 60 yards running in front of me. I got on him and told my dad to stop him. After a couple whistles he stopped and I touched one off......and SsMACK!! Buck dropped out of sight and my dad asked if I had hit him since he was looking at the 2 pt and trying to make it grow an extra pt! I don’t think he thought I would shoot that far since I told him a wanted nothing more than a 50 yard shot. My first kill with my muzzle loader and couldn’t be more happy. Good luck to all you guys!!
Ps bucks came in straight down wind, thank you hecs and asat!
-
Cool photo too on the first posted. The plastic bag ruins it a bit, but the lighting is spot on. Congrats on a great deer.
-
Anya shot her first deer in 2018 at my dad's house in Walla Walla.
Love this when the chicks get the bucks!
-
Love it when women call females chicks! Good call!

More excellent additions great job everyone. My brother and I salvaged a mule doe last Wednesday night off hwy 20. Maybe I'll post it here or start a new thread since it was not technically hunted or harvested.

What a toad! I never cease to be amazed at the antler size that Mulies can grow. Wonderful buck! Congrats!

Well I started out the year with 3 tags... 2 down 1 to go 😁. I drew second deer antler less here in Washington and the Sumpter unit in eastern Oregon. Started off by trying to fill my doe tag after my military weekend and headed out to my area I had been scouting Monday morning. After many ridges, draws, and 7 hours of hiking/hunting I decided to head back to the truck and move to the next spot since I hadn’t seen a deer yet. While walking back the rattle snakes decided to come out. I sat there throwing rocks at the second one for a little bit and then kept moving. 10ft later there’s a huge snake in the bush to my right so I jump back to the left and as soon as I do that 20 yards in front of me I hear deer start to run. A doe and a small 2 point move up the hill out of this little draw and stop broadside at 50 yards. One shot with the new bullets and she dropped like a rock.
Eastern Oregon hunt.
Because of all the craziness of Covid I didn’t get to head down and scout like I would have liked to. So BaseMap and Onxmaps scouting happened a ton. I headed down this last Saturday morning to an area I thought might be pretty good. I planned on hiking high into the backcountry for the first 4-5 days and then heading down to lower elevations for the last part of the week. Goal was to try and shoot something nice at the beginning and then focus on just getting anything legal at the end to bring meat home. The first day I hiked up and went over to a big basin to get water only scaring a few deer and finding lots of tracks and mountain goats. The full moon was so bright I figured that most the deer moved only at night, first light, or last light. Sunday morning I left my camp and headed down to a draw I hadn’t been yet hoping to find deer that hadn’t been spooked from the day before. While sneaking down I got to a glassing point and within 10 minutes I spot a BIG buck feeding out of another draw towards the bottom of the basin below me. At 500 yards he looked huge in the first light and I had a little buck fever going. I began to move down to him as he disappeared moving left to right. I made a plan to move to the right into the basin and hope that he would pop out of the thicker area into the open moving to bedding. So I sat down an waited but chose a poor position with no shooting rest available. After a little while a buck pops out around 340 yards walking quickly. I make a bunch of buck fever decisions and never get a shot off as he walks into some more thick brush in the bottom of the basin and disappears again. This buck looked a little different and like he had a 3” kicker. So now I’m pretty sure at this point that my mind is playing tricks on me. After sitting there for hours waiting for him to come back out I decide to head back up to camp and get out of the sun and heat. I head back down to the same area around 3 and began to watch the same area until last light. With around 15 minutes of light left and still no deer I decide to pack up and head over to watch the other draw for a couple minutes before I head back to camp. As I do this walking on a log about 5 feet from where I was sitting I break a stick as I loose my balance a little bit. I look back down into the basin an see something dark that wasn’t there all day long at 330 yards. I put the binoculars up and see a great buck standing broadside looking right at me!!!! Of course he would pop out when I just left the spot that I had a solid shooting rest. So I drop my binoculars, sit on my butt and take aim off my knee... boom...whackkk...he runs around 15 yards and starts just to stand there staggering. I move to my left and take my pack off so I could use it as a shooting rest and fire another round off. Boom..whackkkk. He stands there swaying for another couple seconds and then tumbles down the hill. Lots of excited calls later and one of the hardest pack outs I’ve had he’s butchered and on the wall since I’ve had a whole week of vacation to work on him. Exciting hunt and fingers crossed for late muzzy now.

Wyoming high mountain hunt. Region H. This was a great adventure. Can't wait to do it again.
Thats a great buck there. Im going to hunt deer in idaho in less than a month. Both white and mule will be fair game. Never seriously hunted mule deer before, so as much as i love whitetail im hoping i can shake up a muley buck like that, something that would turn my crank enough to notch my tag on a mule deer and check that off my bucket list. Probably not going to happen, but who knows.
-
Great story and buck. Way to get in there and get it done. Congrats.
-
Awesome. Stellar shooting at that range. Congratulations.
-
I don’t post on here much anymore but figured it’s been awhile and even longer since I pulled the trigger opening day. Thanks to a good friend for convincing me to go only having one day to chase mule deer this year. (They are and always will be my favorite) There’s a piece of reality that sets in after being fortunate enough to take an old mountain buck that is irreplaceable. I was lucky enough to have the right wind and the upper half over my hunting partner. After letting a couple decent white tail bucks walk this morning and regretting it most of the day as I hadn’t seen another deer.. I crested a small ridge and came face to face with this guy under 20 yards. Glad I built another long range gun to shoot archery range... poor guy didn’t even get a kick in. Long pack, long drive home, season is history.

Wanted to get my buck quick this year as I have a bull tag to prep for, couldn't make it happen on the opener, but found this guy this morning at about 1000 yards, pulled a stalk on him, and after sitting there trying to find him as he was bedded in the grass for 5 or 10 minutes, (they sure are hard to spot when they don't wanna be seen haha) he finally got nervous enough to stand up and start running. Stopped at 300 yards broadside and I let him have a taste of the 257 weatherby. He took off on a dead sprint up the hill, shot again at 350 on the run at a steep quartering away, he turned around and head back towards me down the hill, at this point my buddy was yelling at me to stop turning him into swiss cheese over the radio, said he was pretty well done, he ran back almost to where he was bedded and keeled over, first shot was as perfect as it gets, put a clean hole through the heart and clipped liver, second shot was far back coming up through the paunch and up into the vitals. Still amazing how far they can run sometimes without a heart. Bout two miles back through CRP. Made for a long drag.

We had a successful opening morning. My brother shot the bigger buck while I shot the smaller. It was the first time I took my son so the size did not matter all that much. We (buddy) ended up getting another buck on sunday too.

Opening morning was not what we expected. With hunters everywhere, I was surprised to find this buck bedded between multiple different groups of hunters. After sneaking in from a 1000 yards out getting to 400 and missing, he came running torwards me. I finally got him at 250 broadside and he rolled all the way to the bottom. I one tripped him out solo as my buddy drove the truck to the bottom to pick me up.

Yep, I have a cabelas game cart. One drawback to it is the darn wing nuts on the bolts that go on when you unfold it for use. They are always backing off no matter how tight you get them. Lost one today. I think I am going to drill them for molly hogans.
Dr, hinted about me taking a hear stress test. I think I just did today. 3 miles in and 3 out to get the cart, 3 back in and 3 out with the deer so 12 miles plus three hills to go up on the way out. Home by 12:30.

That will get you warmed up for elk season.

I think I am no my 4th or 5th set of wing nuts for mine. When we hauled Little Pathfinder's bear out of the woods this August one came off in the dark somewhere along the trail. We replaced it with black electrical tape... :P

Swanderek - what unit is that buck from?? That buck is so interesting - well outside the norm for anything North of Southern OR or CA BTs, though they appear out of nowhere sometimes. It's night and day different from the standard lower hills/coastal BT. Maybe just got a set of good genes from one or both parents. Very cool buck, wherever it took it's last breath.

10 years since my last deer and this one almost didn't happen. We were all packed up and ready to head down the mountain when this stud decided to cross the road above camp. Fifteen minutes of chaos and searching, I was finally able to put this buck down for a dirt nap. Couldn't have done it without my buddies and thankful for all their help.

My first deer.
700 yard stalk
Shot at 160 yards
7000 feet of elevation and over 3 miles pack out.
Could not have done it without the help of my friend Chris who spotted it and insisted that there were bucks in the area. Also thanks to Harry who was also spotting and helped with the pack out.
My son Kyle was also part of the original spotting of the buck but was not able to be there 5 days later when I shot him.
I am thankful for all of the guys in my hunting camp who invited me 5 years ago and have been outstanding encouragement and excellent friends. They were as excited as I was!
There is a long list of people who have contributed to my hunting experience over the past several years which came together this week. I am thankful for all of them and value their help.
This includes this forum which was a big part of my initial education as I started hunting later in life.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201024/1d4705fcb60ffbf64037b756b5e56aae.jpg)

After two years trying to get a mule deer in WA and one year coming close but not connecting over in Idaho, I finally got it done in my second year hunting ID:
I was thrilled with how it happened. I think I spotted this deer and a similar buck the night before the opener, stuck around that spot for a couple days, and relocated him for a classic spot & stalk the morning after a nasty high-elevation wind/sleet storm. It was six miles from the road, half of that off-trail. There were no other hunters around for miles and hundreds of elk (see the hilltop in the background of the pic), with some of the bulls bugling up a storm. Awesome experience in the mountains.

High country blacktail
-
Second buck of the year. Such a grind, took us 3 days to even find a buck in a unit we’d never stepped foot in. End up seeing some great bucks but getting shot opportunities in oak brush was our biggest challenge. We both ended up taking nice deer. Shot mine with 5 minutes left on the last day, solo packed mine out 3 miles in one trip which was quite fun. Pack ended up weighing 104lbs with my binos/tripod which I forgot on the mountain the night before and my gun.
-
Congratulations you two earned it.!!!
Fantastic job
-
9:30 this morning. Came out of a wooded draw into the bottom of a cut 15 minutes after I did my first rattle.
-
Really proud of my youngest son. He has hunted hard this season, countless miles on mountain bikes behind gates, lots of be boot miles and he finally got it done this morning at about 8:20. His first still hunting buck, shot him free hand at about 20 yards
-
Got it done Friday Morning. Orange off just for picture.....
-
Dandy for sure

Cool bucks all! Congratulations on your success.

Your not kidding. On top of these bucks I have pictures of 2 mashers. One from Kitsap and one from Lewis. The Lewis buck is bigger than any buck on here this year. It's a jaw dropper.

Well post the pics bud

I left my trailer at home because I was tired of hauling it back and forth empty. Btw, @jakeland gave me info on the trailer he used, as well as some optics defogging tricks, that have helped me immensely, but here was my creative way to do the 4 miles without the trailer :chuckle:

Good for you

Brokentrail, good for you, i've packed a few deer out on my bike just like that, best feeling in the world is when you see your truck lol.

2020. slick 4
-
That's a real pretty buck right there!
-
Awesome buck. But I must be confused I always thought when they said slick four it meant it was just a straight four point with no eye guards. Yours looks like it’s got some pretty heavy duty eye guards to me. Can’t wait to get to Montana on Friday and start chasing some rutting mulies
-
Well, I've never heard that. I just meant he's a clean 4 with no junk. :dunno:

Yeah I think you’re probably right I guess I probably just always assumed and never asked. Awesome deer! Congrats

awesome Blacktail no need for any color as in gloss of anyother kind of stain or anything he's already got all the color he needs grats.
-
2020 blacktail 10-25 unfortunately this is the best I can do for pics this year . Buck was on 4 does
-
My son got it done on his Benge Youth Doe tag. He tagged out earlier on a second deer tag in the same area. Got her walking back to the truck after a couple miles of climbing hills. I had just joked with him that if he was going to shoot one, now would be the time to do it. I have to admit, I have way more fun watching the boy hunt and be successful than I do hunting and having success on my own...and that's saying something.
-
Big bore that's a heck of a BT. Nice work!
-
Congrats to your son Treeclimber. Let's hope this is the start of a fruitful hunting career.
-
That's how you do it Treeclimber! That or take a nap under a tree and a buck will surely show itself!

Opening day near Twisp, friends deer. 4x4 Muley
After 5 days hunting over there and seeing some bull moose we came home and I got the 2x3 blacktail on the 25th.

Congratulations, all! Some awesome deer!
I took my Idaho whitetail last Saturday afternoon (around 4:00 PM) with some light rattling and grunting back in the forest, just adjacent to some small open patches of green grass. He came in to 6 yards, and gradually walked off to 15 yards while I pondered whether to close my season. His venison, my favorite trophy, is outstanding. :)
(Sorry for the duplicate post with the whitetail rut thread).
Best of luck to all of those still hunting!

My favorite Mulie this year, Lewy!

Late archery cascade blacktail. Thanksgiving morning and my first archery harvest. This is my second year archery hunting. I was still hunting in the timber and this guy stepped into an opening between the trees at 40 yards and gave me a good broadside shot. I hit a bit further back than I would have liked, but still hit the back tips of both lungs and he piled up after about 80 yards.
-
Congrats on a dandy blacktail and first archery harvest. I rotated the photo for ya.

Ha! No not as easy at all. The big fork was close to the road. With this buck I was about a mile or so deep when I shot him. Lots of work but very worth it.

Well that's a very nice good old buck. I know you had help getting it out. If you ever get in a jam let Mike or me know and we can help out. Well Mike can carry your bow. :chuckle:

First wild game harvest after starting to hunt 2 years ago. I would have never thought my first deer would have been a Western WA blacktail, especially after two trips to the Methow. Euro mount, field dressed and processed all the meat, and still working on tanning the hide. This guy was absolutely loaded with ticks! I am very appreciative of this deer and he tastes so good!! Great opportunity to share good food with family and friends especially with everything going on in the world.
-
Congrats on your first deer.
-
Congrats Oncorhynchus! Very cool you are taking care with the entire animal. I enjoy that part just as much as the hunt. Unfortunately I've only pulled it off once in the last five years! Well done sir.

:yike: Cool, was it an injury that messed up his one side you think?
I'm not sure, I didn't notice any obvious injury's on him. It's possible that he could have damaged it somehow during the early growing stages while in the velvet this year also.

Beautiful WT. Would have been a bruiser if the other side hadn't been damaged (not that its not a bruiser as is...) congrats!

Stud buck man! I cant decide if its a bummer or awesome that he grew a screwed up antler. :chuckle: A euro would he sweet and then put his cape on the sheds and have the best of both worlds!
Awesome when it comes together on a buck you have been after for a while.
-
:yeah: I always say whitetail don't do much for me... But dang a buck like that gets me fired up! Sweet buck for sure!
-
Anything wrong with his opposite hind leg? Strange question but have seen it twice now
-
Not the hind leg per se, but I have read where if the opposite one if his reproductive organs was somehow dysfunctional that could lead to a messed up antler. That is a beautiful buck.

@Elkslayer, great deer. I think I may know what you mean by being after him for a "while". Mind if I ask what day you killed him?

that wasnt me it was elkslayer. I wish i could have followed that buck then kilt it!

I wasn’t able to find any noticeable damage to this buck anywhere. I also had the opportunity to watch him up close a couple weeks ago. I had him under my stand tending to a doe for a good 30 minutes without ever offering me a good shot opportunity. He appeared to be perfectly fine then.

I am pretty sure he was fairly young based on body size. Only 90lbs hanging. Only took him because of his poor genetics with the narrow rack. Wanted him out of the gene pool.

Great

I finally got around to posting my late season archery blacktail. After spending 5 days from dawn until dark in my elevated stand, passing on a couple small bucks and several does, this guy walked out with a doe on December 1st, right after noon and presented a nice 20 yard shot. He sprinted 40 yards and fell over. He was my number one target buck from all my trail cam pics although he had one more small point on his left that was broken off by the time I got my shot at him. I couldn't be happier as this is my biggest blacktail to date.
(I can't figure out how to rotate the pics)

Nice buck congrats
