lets see some

8 weeks to go before I even start. :chuckle:
-
There was a dandy posted somewhere. Either Facebook or here, super nice velvet buck.
-
Not a monster but will be good eating. Only my third archery buck and my first in velvet. Anybody have a trick to getting it off easy? If I was doing more than a European mount I might want to preserve it but it is in pretty rough shape already.
-
Nice buck and meat in the freezer
-
Nice work! Velvet looks cool inject formaldehyde to preserve it👍🏻

Nice shot!

Congrats, nice buck.

nice buck! Congrats. As for velvet, maybe look into finding a tree from the are, take some of the branches and start rubbing the antler down like they would. Will pee the velvet and add color to the antlers

never would have thought to pee on the velvet. Don’t really want to know how people figure out things like that

So are people just not shooting deer this year? What’s been going on?
-
I went out the 1st-3rd and saw three does. The bucks we have been seeing on a fairly regular basis have yet to show themselves. Going back out this weekend
-
No shooters this weekend but did see 2 does and 4 fawns. 1 of the does had 3 fawns, all 4 were awfully small for this time of year.
-
Nice work!

nice deer everyone

Right on!

Only had a few days to hunt deer this year so no time to be picky. Happy to add this guy to my freezer next to my elk.
-
You’ve got a freezer full knock !!!
-
We had to wait out a LOT of rain and climb wwwaaaayyyyy down into the nastiest country I've ever gotten into to get him. We ended up spending the night away from camp because we couldn't figure out how to get out of the canyon in the dark; thankfully we found a spot with firewood and my buddy had his tarp.

Took this mulie on Sunday with my .62 T/C Hawken and patched round ball. I sneaked in and sat on the rock bluff right above him. I had to wait over 3 hours for him to stand up. I shot from about 25 yards and he fell about 30 feet below his bed. The second picture shows him as he lay, his bed at the middle right side of the picture near the shade, and where I sat near the edge of the rimrock near the center, just to the left of the bushes. He is a 4x4 with short eyeguards. Another fun solo hunt!

Passed on a spike at first light, couldn't pass this one up at last light. Shot it with my rifle, could have used my bow.

Only had 2 days to hunt and got it done this morning.
-
Little ground shrinkage on him but I’m happy. Was shooting backup for a buddy and just couldn’t let him get away. Ol buck fever will get ya :chuckle:
Now I get to help others find bucks and have 0 stress. Going to continue being a great year!

Oh for sure haha, i was a little bummed it was over so quick, but i also have a second deer tag, and am trying to get my girl and dad a buck, so it was a bit of a relief so now i can focus on them

Opening morning success! A 350 yard cross-canyon heart shot and a 3-mile pack out off the mountain made this an unforgettable hunt.

Nice shot, cool looking buck. Left handed tikkas are known to punch hearts from decent distances.
-
Slim Pickings this year. Figured I'd better fill the freezer as soon as I got the chance... the only deer we saw opening day.
-
PathfinderJR got it done yesterday morning. Watched him sneak into a draw right at first light, stalked him and killed him in his bed. The bed was so deep all you could see was his face. He stayed on him until he stood and let the 6.5 do it's job.
-
My son filled his tag opening morning. It was his last youth year and didn’t draw crap so I was glad he filled his general deer tag. And his best one yet, a bit bigger than the does and spikes he has got in the past. He was glad he decided to get up at 5 with me

He was really stiff by the time I got to him and was by myself using my camera timer, so I didn’t get any decent front field shots.

Wife filled the freezer opening morning. Her hunt lasted one hour. Her record in previous hunt 10 min. It was a hard pack out, had to roll it into the tractor bucket. :chuckle: :chuckle:

Wyoming last day buck, 320 yard shot. 6 mile pack out. Luckily there were 4 of us to split the load. We use the gutless method taking off the quarters, back straps, tenderloins and neck meat. We deboned the quarters to keep the weight down and to help the meat to cool.. Thanks to my sons and friend Gregg for
all of the help.
-
Wranglers and a flannel, reminds me of most my ol mans hunting pictures!👍👍
-
Lewy, Hahaha, how I roll!
-
(http://)
450 yard initial shot with the -06. Longest by far from me, I am more the 50 yard guy...
Hopped up when I got up to him. My coupe de graw was a little high... For giggles looked for about 15 minutes for the other antler and never found it. The other side had a much larger fork which is what I saw. Real happy he was forked on both sides considering the situation.
-
Son got his first BT last night! Rutted up 2x2. Great deer all, now that my sons done, hopefully I can post one soon too. If you're on whidbey the deer are chasing.
-
Daughters opening morning buck.
-
Tagged this guy with 5 minutes left in legal shooting hours on opening day. He's no monster, but after seeing 26 mule deer, 3 Whitetails, 25+ elk, and a monster black bear, tagging a deer a few hundred yards from camp seemed like a fitting end to a pretty eventful day. The short deer season just means more time to focus on elk and birds.
-
that is a nice muley!
-
Not looking good for the whitetails this year is it...
-
Wife I doubled up second day.
-
This guy stepped out at about 75 yards when I was working my way in on another buck so when opportunity knocks ……. :chuckle: The 140 grain berger hybrid out of my .270 absolutely re arranged his lungs and unfortunately blew part of the backstrap and spine but he didnt take a single step and my tags filled .
-
Well the EHD outbreak really slimmed down the herd in 139 but I was able to find a good one. 340 yards bedded and that was all she wrote. I drew a late buck tag so I hate to end in Oct but I'm not sure I'd do much better. This boy was a brute and a bitch to pack out but got a real good haul of meat of of him. I do love Palouse country whities but I'm sure sad I have to wait a year to do it again.

Unit 633 Mason. One night to hunt. Had 7 year old son along for first hunting trip. Turns out we shoot the biggest blacktail of our lives.

I filled a doe tag this morning.

Only have one of the head. It was an amazing time. One evening to hunt with kid this year. Had two does feeding for about 20 min. Paxton had to stay still for 1.5 hours. And he is 7 so not an easy ask. About 45 min later big boy came through. His first attendance to a kill.

Wife and I slept in the truck Friday night, we hiked in the pouring rain amd after a missed opportunity early in the morning, we spotted this buck bedded at 250, fog rolled in amd we had to wait for 40 minutes and for a break and he was still there, she shot amd he only went 15 yards. So proud of her for sticking it out and getting a nice Olympic peninsula blacktail

There's a whole story here that I'll probably have to post on a thread of it's own, but this was Little Pathfinder's first trip to Idaho. Smallest buck he's ever shot, but he packed the entire thing out on his own. 7 miles packing meat uphill, walked a total of 21 mountain miles that day.

Wow! Some amazing bucks! Congrats!
-
Bigbore40 - are you cutting up your own deer?
Is somebody else doing it?
I'm curious....how many pounds of meat are you getting off that buck.
It's a huge buck. I assume at or over 100lbs of meat.
We would love to know.
Thanks a million!
-
Yes doing it myself. I tend to get less than the butchers do to the amount of trimming I do . But I'll let you know
-
This is my first decent buck. Caught him sneaking in the oaks while I was sitting. The shot was 75 yards and I recovered the bullet which mushroomed beautifully. Second to last day of modern general and I could hear my empty freezer humming. He smells rutty and I must have caught him cruising. 5x3 with eye guards benchleg for sure

Lots of good ones taking a dirt nap....Congrats all!!

Smoked this 2 point at 310 yds. Made a perfect shot in some nasty wind and rain. He ran about 25 yds and fell over. 143 gr. Eld-x performed flawlessly once again. Complete pass through with a nice sized exit.

Plenty of tags being filled this year. And freezers are even fuller. Oh yeah. Group is running out of tags this year. Another great season and great memories.

One of my customers lives in a magic spot. Always bucks cruising and bears too. She shot this buck last Saturday chasing a doe in their pasture. He went down on her trail camera. Pretty cool sequence of pics bit I don't have those to show. Her biggest buck so far.

Nice black tail

Best buck yet! Got into the woods late with only an hour until shooting light. Raining and blowing so hard I could barely see. Got lucky and found this guy at the edge of a cut.

Well someone had other plans for me..God works in mysterious ways
The gate my target buck lives behind had 4 truck's including my buddy that was there super early....So off to a new spot I haven't hunted for 20 year's. Not expecting much it's not a real deery area..bee bopping along, y in the road, I choose right. Ten more steps and through the morning haze I see buck in the road. Nose down heading for the edge. Scope up and two things I'm a sucker for with blacktail, dark antlers and character....well my season is over . :chuckle:
Side note my buddy jumped the masher today. He's going after it all weekend and I'll post pics of it later...
-

Thanks! He was so excited. It’s crazy, six years ago was his first hunting trip. Now today he has done everything himself. From harvesting the animal, gutting, skinning to butchering it. I’ve done maybe 1% of the work.

Has this been the best black tail year ever?
I feel like this has been a pretty good one. In the last 5 years there was a pretty good one too IIRC.
-
Its been an incredible year for my group. Not only blacktail, but mule deer, bears and elk. We have never seen so many elk and bears before. And mule deer numbers have been very solid at least with bucks. To my surprise the buck to doe ratio was 5 to 1 bucks to does in areas we have been. And although number of bucks shown haven't been super high for blacktail the ones that do show up don't get away. And others seem to be having an amazing year for blacktail as well. One thing I have noticed for us as many others is a minimal amount of whitetail so changing efforts over to mule deer and let whitetail recover a bit was a good move in my opinion. Plenty of tags filled this year. Great memories made. Freezers filled. And yet more seasons to come for a couple last tags. Best season yet.
Congrats all. And this state still has some good opportunity with a little extra effort to get er done.
-
Grandsons got it done!

Holy crap how I love big forked horn blacktails. Nice job

I punched my multi-season tag last Friday. I didn’t want to on a buck this small but I had to when I saw the tracking collar!

That's cool. Will be interesting to see what bios tell you.

:yeah:
OP, I would of lowered standards too for a collared one. Cool

I punched my multi-season tag last Friday. I didn’t want to on a buck this small but I had to when I saw the tracking collar!
Very cool  We killed one back in the 80,s that was collared over in the valley. Ours had a brass plate on the collar that said if this is found or this buck is killed to please report to the Game Department, we turned it in and a couple weeks later got a letter telling us the history of the buck, from the time and location of his collaring by the bio and his crew to the bucks movement over the years they tracked him until the batteries went dead. It was all really cool, they tracked him way up into British Columbia for his summer range then back down into the Methow for the winter, we killed him within a mile or so from where they tranquilized him and collared him, it was this particulars Bios first collaring. There was much more to the letter but to lengthy to tell here. Once again, congratulations
-
nice deer everyone
-
This is my muzzleloader quality tag deer, took me 5 hours to get within range of him and his doe, and when I got to 85 yards I was able to double lung him.

Wow, it looks to me like you put that poor buck out of his misery robescc given how tight that collar is. What general area if you don't mind me asking? Curious to hear what you learn about this.

No doubt - hopefully your next BT will be a monster. The collar looks tight and constricting. Poor guy!

He was taken in Skagit County. The collar looks tight in the pic but actually has tons of room and hangs fairly loose when he was standing. I think there was even enough room for him to slip it off once he shed his antlers. I was expecting some wear on his neck but there were no visible signs of injury.

Blue tongue didn’t get all of them in 121.

Nope you killed the last one.... jk! :chuckle:.
Congratulations on finding one of them buggers up there! I've seen plenty in certain areas. They will just have to fill in the gaps in the next few yrs like they always do. Sad part is my area was just getting them back and they are all gone again.

My ten year old son got lucky this year and drew the blue mountains west buck tag, we passed on three smaller bucks during the general season, and had several close calls on his draw hunt before we were able to put it together on this guy. He’s not the biggest buck we saw on our trip but he couldn’t be happier to have this guy as his first buck!

My first blacktail. My mindset was to wait for one of the big boys that I knew were somewhere in the area, but when this guy appeared from behind me chasing a doe I changed my mind. They were so close, maybe 18 yards that I had to wait till they got about 50 yards away before I could move. I love that little 6mn model 788. I walked a mile back to my truck to get my cart, and was blessed again when a vehicle drove by, and three unknown hunters to me offered to help another stranger out. If any of you three read this thank you again. I should have the meat in about 3 weeks.

Great buck! Learning a small productive piece of ground is one of the best ways to consistently kill blacktails, and itnseems like you're well on your way.
-
Thanks, guys! I learn something new each season.
-
Tagged out on Saturday as the sun was getting low. To echo what HunterofWA said about his. Washougal unit and in a smaller area I have committed to getting to know well and that has a lot of activity. This year was the easiest elk season I ever had, so to even things out this year was one of the hardest longest roughest deer seasons I have had in a long time. Shot bigger but for some reason I was more jacked on this one than any other deer in a long time. Missed the first shot but luckily he stood around long enough for a second.
-
Another quality Blacktail. Well done!
-
It’s taken me five years to get my third blacktail and it happened on the same date and same property that I got my first one on.

I had a tough season, saw very few deer early gun season then passed a small doe. The action was non existent after that and only saw a few does all running away from me. The island had a cougar on it and when that happens it always goes to the property I hunt. I am blaming him or her for the lack of action. I saw one big boy and a smaller boy in the yard but not shooting a yard buck ever. Finally on the last day of late season I ran into this big girl and got a shot at her moving by, second shot and she is in the fridge right now.... Very luck as usual, I get a buck or doe every year on this land as it's full of deer moving through....

I feel incredibly blessed to have gotten this tasty little Idaho spike! I wasn't able to hunt at all last year because my dad was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in September. We lost him two months later. This last year has been incredibly difficult trying to help my mom as much as possible and keep running a business with my husband. Life being what it is, I was unable to fill my WA deer and elk tags, and my ID elk tag. Finally I just took a 3 day trip to ID by myself, slept in the truck and hunted from a pop up blind. These were the only antlers I saw all season but I am so grateful to have at least one tag filled and some venison in the freezer again! PTL!
-
Congrats, kellama2001. Sorry to hear of your recent loss. Best of luck next year. You always kill deer.

Your whitetail kind of looks like it had some type of pedicel injury on the right side, a bit asymmetrical.

I love seeing these big bucks. It gives me hope that one day I'll get a big one too. So far, all the spikes still eat good!
-
My best WT and Thanksgiving Day buck. A lot of time in the stand with MS tag. Maybe somebody smarter than me can flip it.
-
Rotated and congrats on a great buck

Great whitetail Ghost!!!!!

Definitely a smasher WT there GH .

if it grows it I count it ! Again nice buck
-
Dang, Congrats on a masher WT
-
Nice Buck.
I personally don't count nubs if they are less than 1" since that is the state definition.
But whether you count them or not it is still a very nice WT. Congrats.
-
my first 4x4 very happy about it i’m doing a euro mount with it.

It was muzzy. Most the deer I saw were bucks. Only saw 3 does. 3 fawns. About 15 different bucks. Lots of 2 points. 1 4 point. And this guy. Had the 4 point bedded with this guy at 158 yards. Passed the shot on him as that distance is pretty far out there for me with open sites. Took this guy when he got up and started feeding away. Was laying prone on a bipod. Had plenty of time to be confident in the shot. I practice at that distance more than shorter distances. And that is where my gun is zeroed. Although I keep my max shots at that distance as well. Just to be safe. But for sure am plenty accurate there. 250 grain bloodline bullets. After the shot the 4 other bucks just stood there for about 20 minutes looking at my buck. Super cool experience. Used this season to hunt some new country I've never been in. Was happy I did.
I did notice whitetails were non exhistant in areas that should have held good numbers. Found carcasses in every basin. Only saw 1 whitetail fawn all week. Also lots of carcasses in mule deer country of does. Covered a lot of different country during the season and it was clear that predators are way up and disease hit the whitetails. In the areas I was in.
