Looking for someone to help with training hunting dogs
« on: February 14, 2024, 10:12:11 AM »
I’ve got two golden retrievers, and one of them (he just turned 3) has the instinct to hunt. I’d like to find someone he can train with so he can get that mental stimulation. I’ve never hunted, but would like to come along on the training sessions. I’ve found some trainers that take dogs for a month+, but I’m not interested in sending him away. Located in Woodinville and can drive up to an hour away.

This is my family's kennel. Had them train multiple dogs and they do a good job

Not an expert on Goldens but 3 is a little old to be starting.  For stimulation just take them on a good walk on a forest service road or trail where they are not a lead

:yeah: Conway Kennels is IMO the gold standard for retriever training in the state. Lots of others in the same tier that I dont have personal experience with.

I have a dog at Long Hollow near Ellensburg right now, they seem to also be solid, but require boarding.

Whistling Wings is a hunting / retrieving club based out of the Snoqualmie valley, which is probably more what you are looking for. YOU need to train YOUR dog, but they provide good structure and resources for doing so.
What country can preserve it's liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon & pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants.

Yeah, I bring them both to a variety of places and any trails I find where they can be offleash. But the 3 year old gets too familiar with them and can get bored.  I’d love to find some large open space where they can run, but it’s getting harder to find.

Yes, the 3 year old is very responsive off leash.

There's a lot of scent work you can do at home and other places on your own where it's safe to be off leash.  There's also some books you can reference such as Gun Dog by Richard A. Wolters.

If your dog(s) have the drive to hunt, they can be trained. If you can find someone that trains you to train your dog that's always helpful.

It's a long detailed write up to explain what I know about nose work, something we can talk through a bit over the phone if you want. I've been working with my GSD for a few weeks. A week ago she flushed two birds for me.

There is logic behind why they take your dog for a couple months

See if Pat at NW performance dogs is still doing training. He’s in Monroe area so pretty close to you. I know he was scaling way back a few years ago, but was doing ala cart training which it seems like you’re looking for. I wanted to fully kennel my dog at the time as I didn’t have the free time needed to participate in training.
