My Buddy Just Turned In His 3rd Poacher
« on: September 18, 2012, 10:12:09 PM »

I'm wondering how many points he gets and how that all works?

He may be on to something?   :chuckle:

I heard they don't need a conviction to receive the bonus point reward.

Apparently it's up to the discretion of the officer. I think you need to be sure to ask for your points.

They all saved the evidence so probably a done deal.

He knew of several guys that kept shooting animals (and bragging) and wouldn't use their tags or would get replacement tags.  He just got tired of it I guess.

Correct on both counts.

Werid I was told that the charges had to stick. Hell I could be at about 200 points by now. I need to start talking to a few more people I guess.

See that is what I mean. I call in trespassers and people that have broke fish and wildlife laws and never hear anything about a arrest or charges.

If the information leads to an arrest (a conviction is not necessary), then you are eligible, not guaranteed for bonus points. That's where officer discretion comes in.

I'd find an enforcement officer would is willing to give out points, and then follow up after you've provided information.

I'd guess points are not given for the more minor violations such as trespassing. It's probably more for actual poaching incidents where someone is charged with killing an animal out of season, or something of a more serious nature.

I wonder if when a animal is taken "in a not legal manner" like when a person is tresspassing. Is that considered poaching? If so then there sould be some point for me this year :bash:

Well to me there are different "degrees" of trespassing. Did the person know he was trespassing, and did it anyway?

We have an enforcement officer who attends all our hunter education classes. He gives out his own cell phone and begs students to call them if they observe illegal hunting activity, regardless of where they are. He talks about giving out points to anyone that reports. I know he's given out quite a few points. :dunno:
