silencing a hunting rifle
« on: December 09, 2012, 11:56:53 AM »
I have really bad tinnitus (years of driving semi with straight pipes) and am now scared of pulling the trigger on my rifle without hearing protection.i just was wondering if i could quiet down a .270 enough to be worth it.
The past couple of years i put ear plugs in halfway and push them in before the shot but this takes time and i would rather not do this anymore .I thought about expensive hearing aids with loud shutoffs but i really like the idea of having a quiet rifle.

A quality suppressor will cut the muzzle blast down to manageable levels. You will still get the ballistic crack. I never shoot with out plugs and muffs including hunting UNLESS I am running a can.
I've been hunting with a can since July of las year and will not hunt any other way if at all possible.

I guess what i really want to know is if i can quiet my .270 down enough to  shoot it without ear plugs. The recoil does not bother me  just the loud report which can do damage to my already ruined ears.

That's what all of us are talking about. A suppressor cuts down the noise...

Does any one on here use one on a hunting rifle ??? and if so was it a huge reduction in report or is it still going to ring your ears?

This last summer I got to shoot a few diffrent rifles with cans on them. I wish I could put one on every rifle I have. The only guns that I shot that were realy quiet, a .22 rf and a 45acp, both shooting subsonic. The larger cartriges still had the "crack" about like a unsilenced 22 mag. I'm waiting on the tax stamp to come back for my first can, a gemtec .22rf thats going on my 22/45 lite. Should have it in a couple of months.

I would get a .308 can  for your .22/250. When i bought the  my Gemtech can (still waiting on the tax stamp) for my AR my thought was to get my .22/250 threaded and use one can on 2 rifles. After talking to my dealer and others on here they all say yes a .22 caliber can will work on the .22/250 it's better to go to a .308 because of the speed. I will be ordering a Gemtech .308 for my .22/250 after x-mas

Definitely consider getting the 30 cal can for 22-250 and up.  The extra volume will help out.  I run my 30 Cal Thunderbeast can's on all of mine from a 22-250AI up to 300WM's.  They spend most of their time on the 22-250AI, 6mm's and 7 Rogue.
