300 blackout vs 6.8 spc? Wanting to use for hunting
« on: November 30, 2013, 06:48:37 PM »
I have a complete ar lower and am now trying to decide on what caliber I want to go with.
I do reload and there is a chance I will get a suppressor in the future.

I have heard that the 6.8 is better for longer ranges but have bit seen it for myself.

Thanks for any info

6.8 has a pretty good range of bullets available. Everything from 85 gr. going near 3000 fps to 120 gr going 2600-2800 fps.  It is pretty much right in between a 5.56 and .308 in terms of power.  it is realistically 300-350 yard max ethical hunting range.
300 blackout im not too familiar with, so I wont speak about it.

6.8 for sure if big game hunting. The 300 blk is the ideal subsonic gun. Not a long range shooter.

300 black out is an ideal 100yrd under sub sonic round. have a buddy that reloads it and loves it for what it is.
In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

Sounds like the 6.8 will be a better round for what I'm wanting to use it for.

I agree the 6.8 is better at longer range, but you guys are missing the point of the 300 Blackout. It's essentially AK (7.62x39) ballistics in an AR platform, that can also run subsonic loads without modification. It's not a long range caliber, but is certainly capable of more than 100 yards; the ballistics aren't that far off from a 30-30.

The .300 is going to drop of more with distance, but should be good out past 150yds.. advantage of it is its the same mags, bolt, everythign but barrel- as 5.56.. so to build one all you have to change is the barrel- also brass can be made from 5.56 brass. as a hunting round that might be used beyond "woods" ranges, 6.8 is better, and 6.5 grendel/sporter is better than that (if you can find one)..

Never owned either, but you would be better suited to go with the 6.8 SPC. Or just cover all your bases, leave the 6.8 in the rear view and purchase a 6.5 Grendel/ 6.5 LBC barrel with a matching bolt, along with a couple magazines and your off and running. We have taken Mule deer clean out to 496 yards with the Grendel chambering and a 16" M4 barrel on a AR.

Just another option, it's all personal preference.

:yeah: Another great and better choice yet.

I have a 300blk and with super sonic bullets I would have no problems shooting a deer out to 200 yards or so. That is not what I bought it for. I had a 6.8 for a little while but there is no comparison to the Grendel.

It is a beast in the ar-15 platform. The only cartridge I like more then the Grendel for big game hunting is the 243wssm. Another monster in the ar-15 platform.

Carp,

Did you do a gas gun in a .243 WSSM? I've always thought about it but never made it happen. :(
