Compact flash input from our Photo gurus
« on: July 19, 2015, 05:22:59 PM »
Went camping with the Fam this weekend took My Canon 7D and "one" flash card. Had some great adventures that didn't get recorded as the camera didn't recognize the card  :bash: :bash: Had a  little mulie buck in camp every day as close as 10 ft, not to mention all the family stuff I missed.
I have been shooting digital for about 3 yrs and have never had a failure. I alternate 2, 16 gb CF cards. Unfortunately I only took one on this trip as they seem to have been bomb proof.
My computer is not reading it either. Ideas as to why they go bad. And for cost effectiveness vs usefulness what are your best choices for CF cards in the 16-32 GB range.

PS: the one that failed was a Delkin CF500X 16 GB

Some good info here:

http://www.cameramemoryspeed.com/

I don't see a test for the 7D, but I just picked up a 7DMkII and went with their recommendations for both CF and SD and am happy.

IIRC, the number one way to screw up your card big is to use a cheap card reader, or to use a cable from the camera to your computer, and have the battery go dead. The next best way to screw up your card is to delete images haphazardly or in total instead of formatting cards. I most recently purchased a 64GB & 32GB 1066x Lexar CF card ($100 & $50, respectively). Expensive for the size and speed.. they  are UDMA 7 compliant. I believe the 7D Mark I has a firmware upgrade that will enable the UDMA 7 protocol. I haven't deleted a single image on mine. Instead, I upload them all to the computer, delete them there, put the card back in, and immediately format it. Always, always, ALWAYS format your cards when putting them back in. This not only gives you a clean file allocation table, it maps out bad sectors on the card and remembers not to write there.

If you buy a Lexar card, it comes with recovery software. IDK if it will work on your Delkin or not but its worth a shot. Back in the day Lexar used to promise that if one of their cards fails, they'll not only send you a new card, but recover the data off your own card and send it to you also. IDK if they still do this.

If you ever F up your card or images, the most important thing to do is... NOTHING. take it out of your camera and figure it out later. Don't keep shooting on the card. If it gets wet, take it out and put it in a Ziploc bag with white rice. Usually images can be recovered after a quick format but the more times you rewrite, reformat, and then write again, the more likely it is to be gone forever.

HTH

I Always format " in the Camera" every time I use it after a down load.  Thanks for the input guys. I do have cheap Delkin reader, but have been using it since I started Dig photo.

I'm gonna bump this up to see if there are any other responses. I'm needing to pick up couple new cards and wanted some input. These will be for the first generation 7D

It happens with cards. I had a friend (now deceased) that took his camera to Alaska on his last cruise and none of the pictures where there. I sent the disk back to the manufacture and they did replace it but were unable to capture any images for him. If I buy a new card I test it by taking a series of photos in the back yard and review them in the computer, I then put the card back into the camera and re format it again. I repeat this process enough times to make sure the card is working. In my friends case it was wet and foggy and he was on a cruise ship taking telephoto pictures and my suspicion is the card got too much moisture on it and failed. We can not prove it but other cards of the same brand worked for him!
