My kids were up shooting once with some high school friends. One of the friends was complaining his rifle was acting weird and wasn't hitting paper. My boys found that he was shooting 308's in a 30.06. The kid didn't even notice when he ejected the cartridges that they were now  straight wall cartridges..lol

I thought that was bad, but shooting a 308 through a 270 would be in a league of its own. Glad your okay, guns can be repaired.

A friend of mine had a 7mm mag rebarrelled.  Go to the range with him to sight in.  First shot blew all sorts of debris out of the breach. Spent shell wouldn't extract, but the bolt opened.  Found a VERY enlarged 270 case once we tapped it out.

Glad your OK,
You might think about getting it checked out before shooting it again... stress cracks cant be seen and it could be good for a while and then cut loose later.

I was shooting a USPSA match one time and one of the older guys was having miss fires and when it did fire (several times) it sounded really weird.   I walked over and picked some of his brass up and it was kinda pooched out... he got his guns mixed up and was shooting 9mm for his G17 though his G22 .40cal   :chuckle:

Was on the shooting bench about a month ago with a Mod 70 FWT in 257AI and a Howa Alpine 6.5 CM.  Was working up loads for the CM and fireforming brass for the 257AI, caught myself as I was closing the bolt, 6.5 CM in the 257AI.  Could have been catastrophic like your situation.  270 Win does go bang through a 7mm Mag, kind of hair raising, that was about 30 years ago.  Definitely have to watch what we are doing on the bench and in the field, glad you are ok.

I’ve seen this!  It just so happens that SAAMI 308 ogive will headspace on 270 shoulder in the chamber!  A guy I know put a 308 through a Winchester M70 in 270.  Good thing he was using soft jacketed bullets rather than copper.  Believe it or not, no damage to the rifle.  The case just turned into 308 super Improved.  And...the bullet hit within 2 inches of his group.

That's why one gun and ammo for that gun on the table at a time.
People get killed every year because of screw ups like that.
Good thing no one got injured or killed.
Hundreds of guns a year get trashed because of not paying attention to the task at hand.

Yup it was a 30 cal 150 gr hot cor ,traditional cup/lead core bullet. And a long jump between the COL difference probably help . I do believe the rifle is still good ,bolt needs some fixing or a new one.
Still very stupid on my part, and by no means proud of it ,that's for sure. Rifle was given to me by my parents.
And I've killed some of my biggest bucks with it ,so it was or is pretty special to me. I haven't had the heart to tell my folks I screwed it up like that. They would probably buy me a new one ,but that just doesn't feel right to me.
So I was more devastated about the rifle more than anything.
Yes I have changed some habits at the range and also reloading as well as a result.

It happens, glad you walked away from it. I sure would be curious as to the velocity of that shot.

I have crono my 308 rounds before ,2830 fps is a five shot average. My ar-10 with the same loads are 2690.
48 grain of blc-2 ,which is max in Hodgdon reloading book.
Sometimes I load them with a grain less.47 grain cause I have a two 308 rifles and one shoots better with a grain less.

So ya it should of been right around 2800 or just above on velocity.
That's just off the top of my head ,I would have to look in my data log on my reloading bench .

My buddy and I were getting ready for deer season years ago, he grabbed one of my .308 rounds accidentally and shot it in his .30-06. I still have the piece of brass by my reloading bench, I’ll try to remember to add the pic of it later. Primer barely stayed in the primer pocket, it’s hanging on by a thread

I'm so glad this didn't end tragically. Expensive lesson learned for sure.
