Wyoming NR wilderness violations
« on: November 12, 2024, 11:00:13 PM »
I saw this posted on fb yesterday and found it interesting and left me wondering if it’s true. $150 ticket is nothing compared to a NR trip coming from outta state.

Ya it's a dumb rule. We hunted WY this year and were talking to some locals about the wilderness rule and they didn't even know about it.  Crazy they don't let you hunt public land.

pretty stupid and anything they can "designate" wilderness they do! there were pieces right out of a city with roads all around and couldnt legally hunt it. Yet if you wanted to hike, fish or grouse hunt thats legal

Just another way to squeeze more money out of non residents pockets. Just like NM has been doing.
The only man who never makes a mistake, is the man who never does anything!!
The further one goes into the wilderness, the greater the attraction of its lonely freedom.

Wyoming is very heavily influenced by outfitters. I'd say they benefit much more from this than the state does. Agree it's a ridiculous rule, but also wonder why killing an animal in a no-go area wouldn't be the same as say killing one in a different unit that you don't have a tag for

It is a bit weird that the state of Wyoming is regulating access to federal wilderness lands

Any law for which the violation is a fine is not a ban, it is a fee

Wyoming is charging a $150 fee for out of state hunters to access federal wilderness areas, and only if they are caught and cited by a game warden in the field

Seems like a law worth violating to me  :twocents:

What country can preserve it's liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon & pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants.

Yeah, I think they recently discussed this on a meateater podcast. They seemed to be under the impression it wouldn’t hold up in any court, just need someone to fight it. But, for such a low cost of a ticket might not be worth the headache.

Wyoming statute says nonresidents must have a licensed guide or resident companion to hunt big or trophy game in federally designated wilderness areas. The resident companion will need to get a free non-commercial guide license from a Game and Fish office

The locals and outfitters usually took care of out of state hunters in the wilderness. I’ve heard of and seen flat tires at trail heads on the wilderness boundary in G and H

Who?   The state of Wyoming?

I'm fairly certain only Congress can designate wilderness areas by passing Federal Law.

I'd take a $150 ticket to hunt and not lose my animal. Chump change compared to hiring a guide...
In reality my folks live in Wyoming and my dad goes and gets something from Game and Fish so he can take us into the wilderness area if need be. I think it's only cost him a few bucks to do so.
Politicians like Jay Inslee are the reason we have the 2nd Amendment

Is the hunting in the wilderness really THAT much better?

It’s probably worse than on private land down in the valleys. But if the law says you need to pay either way…
