Solo backpack hunt ends well
« on: October 21, 2012, 11:06:42 AM »
Picked up a rifle for the first time in 20 years.  Always been archery, but with the kids getting ready to hunt and the multi-tag, thought I would wash off the rust.  Packed into an area I hadn't hunted in 20 years alone.  Pretty rough getting in there.  If it wasn't for the two guys from Wenatchee and a chainsaw, I would have been scr%$ed.  PM me if you are on here.  First day got me to camp around 1pm.  My water filter broke and I needed to search out some springs.  Hunted that night and all the next day with out seeing hair until an hour before dark.  Out of the corner of my eye, I caught a cougar staring me down at 25 yards.  Put his face in my scope, flicked the safety off and he ducked.  Didn't see him after that.  Lots of grouse everywehere.  Next morning I had to pack out, went to get water one last time.  Figured I would hunt for a few hours on the way.  Heard a bunch of clacking.  Investigated.  Saw horns everywhere.  Couldn't get a point count on any of them cuz they were sparring(5 bucks).  Finally saw mine and thought "I don't need to count that sh$t".  They funneled down a steep hill before I could get a shot off. I pursed, saw the does they were trying to impress and then saw them heading down.  I set up on a rocky outcrop, and watched  as they passed.  The biggest one was moving the slowest with a swaggar and paused in my shooting lane.  All I saw was legs in the air and the rest of them just stood there and watched.  A 12 hour packout later by myself, and I was done.

Heck of a buck. Dandy. You should definitely write a caption for that pic with the buck on your pack. Your face tells quite a story, though.
