What dog food is everyone using??
« on: February 03, 2013, 10:14:40 AM »
I was wondering what dog food people are using for their dogs in the off season. I recently found out the dog food i used isn't made anymore. There are a lot of options and just trying to get some info on what is being used.

Thanks

We got everyone here on the costco kirkland "Chicken and rice", when looking at the ingrediants label and comparing it to pro plan performance and eukanuba premium performance it is superior in ingrediant and the dogs look killer on it and the consumption rate is down a cup and they are still gaining weight. Best value in price and performance IMO.

Not an expert and haven't tried alot of different ones but Blue Buffalo Wilderness seems to be working well for my dog. He has gotten to a nice weight and his coat has gotten nice since he has been on it. He doesn't seem to go through as much of it as the cheaper stuff. Probably has something to do with the high protein content.

Breeders Choice active care here.  My dogs have always had good coats, and arthritus free through their old age.  Got a 13 year old that still got in some bird hunts this year.  It seems to work well for my labs.

Do most stores carry that brand?

Usually at pet supply stores.  Near me I can get it at either Bridges pets or Pet Pro's.

So what's it run $ for a 35-40 pound sack?

I believe I'm paying a little over $40 for it.

I don't have to feed as much of it as you would with other brands.  My old dog gets a cup of it a day and my younger lab gets 3.

Breeders Choice has  another product line also if a person would like to look into it.  This line came along after the original.  I've stayed with the active care which is the original.

Purina One. Kola's vet likes that kind, and Kola LOVES that kind so..... :dunno: :chuckle: And it is not nearly as much as the other high quality stuff

natures domain at costco. its the same thing as taste of the wild made by diamond. I was doing pro plan, but the price is hiking and it wasn't that great a dog food to begin with.

We feed Pro Plan all year, adjust quantity for cal needs.
I like Pro Plan because I can always find it and it's a high quality feed.

Learn to read the ingredients label, it tells you what is in a feed.
Spent most of my $$ on huntin, fishin & retrievin dogs, the rest I just pretty much wasted.

Loyal brand from Big R... cheap and good stuff. I run my hounds pretty hard and they look good on it.

:yeah:
That is what my vet feeds his dogs, so it's what I go with as well.  Also recommend supplementing with fish oil and glucosamine
