What is a good utilitarian carry gun?

$139 Hipoint 45. Just as ugly and reliable as a Glock at 1/3 the price. 

  boy oh boy......  I've shot a hi point pistol and carbine in 40.  No way in heck I would buy one.  I'd save my mine for ten years to buy something else, and defend myself with a knife in the mean time

There is a big difference between high point and glock. Have you ever heard of a law enforcement agency using a highpoint brand pistol for duty carry?

One of my favorite revolvers was a Tracker Ti in 41 mag. What's not to love about a 24oz 41 mag? That gun came with me every where for a couple of years. Now I wish I could get it back.

Personally, I'm a revolver guy when I'm in the woods. A good 4" 357 is always a good choice. Most of the time now though, I carry a 6.5" S&W 610 in 10mm. Not sure why, but I just fell in love with it.

Have had a couple Trackers in .44 mag, one a 2", one a 4".

Although i have better and more expensive guns including Glock 20,i usually carry a charterms 44special-lightweight and shoots good.

Well I am the odd guy out. Because I carry in the woods every trip a Judge. Yeah ,yeah most people on here do not like them. But my camp,behind the seat,and on my pack gun is a Circuit Judge.
They both eat he same ammo, I like that.

Evert day for carry when not in the field I carry a S & W Sigma 9mm. 16 + 1 mag.

And every day tucked in my cargo pocket no matter where I am is a Ruger  LCP 380

I used to have a Security Six, which I regrettably sold.  My wife currently has an SP101, that she and I both love to shoot.  Never a problem with either gun.  The epitome of a trail gun.

A pistol for the pocket. Durable. Don't give a hoot if it get scratched wet and ugly. I would suggest a Charter Arms Bull dog/pug.

I always pack my XD40 SC.  Great gun, most of time I don't know I have it on me.

Hands down a Glock 20 in 10MM. In a pinch and with due diligance you can shoot 40 S&W in the stock 10MM barrel.

I do like my m&p I also like the ruger sr9 and sr .40.

S&W airweight 38special with +P loads.  Fits in a front pocket and has plenty of punch.

Any J Frame Smith is pretty hard to beat for concealed carry.  Slides right in your jeans pocket and disappears.  I've got one of the Scandium/Titanium ones, a 340PD.  It's not much fun to shoot but great to carry.
