New Muzzleloader Sights (Lyman 57SML and 17AEU)

So, I finally made the custom riser for my tang, tapped a new hole in the tang (on my Cabelas Sporterized Hawken .54) and installed my Lyman Peep 57SML on the tang and a new 17AEU front sight.  The peep didn't quite fit over part of the stock, and the wood around the tang rose slightly higher than the tang itself, mandating a riser or modifications to my stock (which I preferred not to do).  So, I made an aluminum riser, found a brass screw that would fit (since I don't know where to find a blued screw anywhere in normal land) and broke my tap after I finished threading my new tang hole.  The front site came off easier than I thought it would (kind of scary easy) and now we're good to go.  Elk beware (I hope).  Now I've got to go practice.

Looks great, stang!  And I hope it does help connect you with a freezer full of elk...    I went to peep sights a few years ago, with great results at the range and on deer.  The elk have eluded me, though...

Check this out.  I found a guy online that makes Lyman 17 inserts with a fiber optic insert!  I'm very excited.  He's making me a green one and a yellow one that I'm super excited to use in my gun this year.  I'll post a full review when I get them, but these look awesome.

Wow, nice looking rig, Stang.  I just switched to peeps myself.  Can't see very good & can't hit the broad side of a barn.  But next year, I'm going huge.  That Lyman sight looks great.

I have been considering the same setup on my T/C Renegade concern is very low light.  How do you think the very first and last light performance would be with that closed target sight?

Never seen that one before.  I'm sure it would be fine.  Looks like it is tang mounted as well.  The Lyman does seem well built and seems to have a good following.  It has a nice little set screw for a zero stop for elevation, which is kind of nice.  Not sure I'll use it though.  This was the only one that I found that mounted on the tang that I liked, but I didn't see the one you mentioned when I did my search.

Lymans 57SML on my .54 Great Plains.  Needed the open fiber optic front site for my eyes.

Thanks for the info on the Lyman, stang.  Sounds like a good sight.  Yes, the Williams is a tang mount as well.

The Williams is an aluminum sight.  The Lyman is an all steel.  I just took the Lyman off my .54 Renegade.  Just didn't like it hanging off the side of the gun.  Stumbled across a couple of the discontinued TC tang mounted peep sights.  Real streamline.  I would be curious how that  17AEU would work with the TC sight.  I would think it would be fine.
