Nice one!! I've got the Triple Secs also but haven't had the opportunity to use them yet. Headed back out on Monday for the last four days.

I haven't been out there in quite a while. I was thinking about making a weekend run out next weekend to nock down a deer. What's the fire situation? Many deer around?

You're OK near your place. Lotsa deer too and grouse. All of the fires were where we went bear hunting.

Well there is really not to much for a story. If anything this was all about preparation and persistence. I had put out game cameras on top of mineral blocks this year and had been checking them every couple of weeks up to the opener. I had my tree stand placed on the location I had decided was going to give me the best opportunity at the  spike or cow I was legal to take. I had seen around 7 different spikes in this location so I chose to spend my time here. I will say this is in the unit that everyone seems think is overcrowded and has no elk. It is crowded, but my cameras were telling me a different story about the elk.

The first 4 days of the season were pretty slow. I was in my tree stand before light, stayed to late morning and returned fairly early staying until dark. The cameras were getting no elk after the opener. I was getting deer, bear, and coyotes every night, but only one elk passed by my stand and she was on the move not stopping at the block. By Wednesday I was getting a little tired and thought about staying in camp for the afternoon, but decided I was not going to waste a day of the one week I had to hunt and went to the stand. After about an hour of letting everything settle I gave a single cow call and waited. I then gave a another call and thought I saw movement several hundred yards off through the trees. I had a lot of ravens around so I thought it could have been one of them flying around down the hill, but clipped the release just in case.

About 30 seconds later I saw an elk moving up the hill several hundred yards parallel to me, then he turned and came straight in at a gallop. It was all pretty fast. He was at my mineral block before I could draw and I didn't want to move and run him off. As soon as he hit the block he went down to lick it and I drew. The movement got his attention and he looked up at me. I'm positive he was somewhat confused or unsure of what I was as he just looked up at me. I didn't take the shot at first, because he was facing head on,  head way up in the air. I have heard nothing but recommendations against that shot. He started getting that jittery look and I was sure he was getting ready to bolt so I decided at the angle I had, just above the collar and down into the chest cavity would catch a lung. At 18 yards I felt confident I could hit the spot and released the arrow. He dropped instantly and was kicking like he was finished. I reached for another arrow and he got up and bolted downhill for some thick stuff. I was sure I would have to track him down with all the crashing around I was hearing.

I sat in the stand and let the rush pass for a minute before climbing down. Once on the ground I went to the area where he dropped to look for blood. I glanced to the left and the search was over. He dropped in a pile of dead limbs about 20 yards to the left. That turned out to be an extremely deadly shot. The arrow buried 29" in leaving about an inch out. The thrashing around tore the wind pipe and artery. I hit the lung I was after and also caught liver.

I was able to get in touch with my dad who brought in the game cart and we were able to cart him down a game trail I had found.

The hunt pretty much worked out as planned. Best advice I can give is get prepared and stick with it to the end. If that doesn't pay off at least you gave it your best shot. Good luck all!

I will add, after recovering the broadhead it was in new condition. I will be using these if not that same one while out chasing dear around. After last years disappointing performance with my broadhead. I believe I am a convert.
