DNR News: Private landowner closes Mitchell Peak access
« on: July 21, 2011, 07:36:23 AM »

Subject: Mitchell Peak trail access closure

Hi, folks:

I just wanted to let you know of a developing situation in southwest Washington. As of last week, access to the northern trailhead for Mitchell Peak is closed. Mitchell Peak is located in the Siouxon Forest Block, south of Swift Reservoir. The forest spans Clark and Skamania counties.

While the forestland is managed by DNR, the only access road to the trailhead—10 Road—cuts across private landownership, and the new landowner has gated and closed access to the road just east of the intersection with the S-1000 Road.

DNR does not have a recreation easement for recreation access across this road. DNR land managers are working on a solution.

In the meantime, the only access to Mitchell Peak trail is from the North Siouxon Creek Trailhead, in the southern part of the Siouxon Block. The distance from this trailhead to the top of Mitchell Peak is about 13 miles.

I will keep you informed of any new developments.

There has to be plenty more to this. Landowners property getting trashed? People parking where they shouldn't?

Maybe they'll spend some Discover Pass money on a new access road for us. . . .

Yeah the more I read about this DNR Pass they can stick it where the sun never shines....when they make easements providing access to all state lands then I will buy one and if they confront me with the issue they can haul me off to jail, I just became an activist against government  :chuckle: Sorry about that !!

The DNR is not behind the Discovery Pass.....it is the result of so many people opting to NOT pay 5 bucks to parks and recreation each year when renewing vehicle licenses.   It is a political slight of hand , for sure, but Paks and Recreation get I believe 84% of the monies, and DNR and WDFW equaly slit the difference.  Make no mistake, this pass is as crooked as they get, but only e-mails and letters to distric Reps, and the Governor will be heard.   Look for it to be readily enforced by WDFW during any type of hunting season.

They can't even go after game violations what the heck makes you think they are going to go after Discovery Pass Violators.

They will go after Discovery pass violators and by they I mean State park rangers, their job sits on the shoulders of the discovery pass.  The state parks were the agency that had its budget cut by 84% DNR by 8% and Fish and wildlife by 8%.  The Discovery pass is meant to make up for the no longer existent state parks budget.  State parks have been given two years to become a self-sufficient agency, after that time frame the amounts that they have seen in revenue mainly from the discovery pass will either be sufficient to keep parks open or if it falls short closures and layoffs will ensue.  The projections for all parks to maintain the level of staffing and open areas they now have lies on every household in Washington purchasing one Discovery pass.  Something that seems to be confusing a majority of people is that DNR, Fish and wildlife and State parks are all one agency shareing a budget, they don't.

Shame that this got locked up but it totally makes sense. To many local crack heads destroying the land and poaching.

Great unit with a lot of other areas that are open and more plentiful with game in my opinion.
