Ramrod tip for CVA Optima
« on: September 30, 2014, 08:28:17 AM »
I must be missing something...

On an CVA Optima NW, I'm going to shoot Hornady SST sabots with the flex tip. What ramrod tip can I use that will allow me to put the ramrod back in the stock guides without taking the tip off?  :bash:

There must be something because it doesn't make sense to take the tip off to store it.

Thanks,
Carl

I am shooting the same bullet.  without a tip on my ram rod the ballistic tip portion sometimes got stuck in the ram rod and pulled the bullet out of the sabot.  Hornady makes a short tip ( about 1/2 inch long) that doubles as a cleaning jag.  I tested it at the range last weekend and it works fine.  I have a TC northwest explorer and with the loading tip on the end the ramrod sticks past the end of the barrel about a 1/4 of an inch.  But the ram rod still locks in place on the rifle.  Hope that helps.  If the tip is below the barrel but protrudes past the end  of the barrel I don't think that is a problem but would be interested to hear other opinions.

Any jag designed for tipped bullets should work fine.  Here is a specific one for the SST's at Cabela's.  The diameter should be the same as the tip on the stock ramrod so it shouldn't interfere with the barrel.  It will most likely stick out past the end of the barrel but there is nothing you can do about that.

http://www.cabelas.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=735140&categoryId=0&parentCategoryId=0&subCategoryId=0&indexId=0&productVariantId=1377468&quantity=1&itemGUID=&WTz_l=SBC%253Bcat105591780%253Bcat105649380%253Bcat105651180&destination=/user/wishlist.jsp

They make ones that are Barnes specific but they work fine for the SST's as well (this is what I use and I shoot SST's as well).

Thanks, Gentlemen.

I don't mind it sticking out a bit.  I looked at the tip on Cabela's web site, I just didn't know if it would fit back into the guides.

Thanks again,
