need some help for my pops
« on: June 24, 2015, 02:35:49 PM »
first let me start by saying I don't know if this is where I should post this. My dad would like to start bow hunting and though I have years under my belt with my rifle I've never gone out for archery. for Father's Day we went out and got him a 2015 PSE and all the gear he will need. the trouble is how to scout/lure early season bucks.. I hunt the rut so rattling and calling usually brings them in but I don't know what it is that you do to attract archery deer. we will be hunting our own private land and any advise will be helpful

I am gonna shift this to "Bowhunting", thinking you may get more traffic from other bowhunters there.

I would say that your best bet isn't to really attract them but to find their travel routes between feeding and bedding areas and ambush them. Learn their habits and rituals and be patient.  :twocents:

If you're property is timbered, perhaps consider setting up a treestand or two along (as vandeman mentioned) travel routes or potential water sources (if you're property is relatively dry).  Baiting may be an option also if treestanding.

You find the deer, then you sneak up on them.be down wind. Take off your shoes if it helps and sneak like a snake. I cant sit in a stand, I get bored or cold or cant sit still so I use binoculars and  go to the deer.

Private property in the early season can be a lot of fun! I have always wanted to be in such a situation.  I would start by putting cameras out, and see what you have for bucks on the property. And set your cameras  on   like others have said travel routes.  Find the route that your deer are using to access the food source. Without  a whole bunch of pressure they should main tain their summer routine till the velvet comes off, and that will be about the time to climb into that stand
I don't always shoot big mule deer, but when I do, it's with a bow tech!
