Mexico Goulds Hunt
« on: May 03, 2016, 12:15:13 PM »
A few years back I decided I was going to go hunt for Goulds turkeys, so I went ahead and booked a hunt with an outfitter. After a long wait, I was on my way to Chihuahua, Mexico. Wow. What an experience. I was able to harvest two outstanding gobblers in the high elevation Sierra Madre mountains. If you think Merriams are a pretty bird, Goulds completely blow them away. They are just stunningly beautiful with their snow white tips and shimmering body colors. The country they live in is spectacular as well. Pinion pine, oaks, mesquite, and juniper dot the rugged mountains these birds call home. They are true mountain birds folks. I called in both of my birds on the first and second evenings of the hunt. We had some really windy weather on the first two days that kept the birds pretty quiet. I was tagged out and hadn’t even heard a gobble! The next two days the wind laid down a bit and I went out with the other hunters to catch the action of their hunts and try to get some footage. The last two days the birds gobbled hard off the roost in the mornings. Their gobble is similar to a Merriam’s, except a lower pitch. Everyone in camp tagged out and had great hunts. Overall it was an amazing experience and one heck of a hunt. Made some great memories, met new hunting friends from all around the country, and am definitely planning on doing this hunt again in the future!

Those are beauties....congratulations!

My buddy went down a few years ago and killed several Gould's, then he went to Guatemala I believe for the Oscelated.
