Gun Safes (what to watch out for)
« on: February 13, 2012, 01:41:26 PM »
We started talking about Winhester, Sentry, Stack-on, and Cannon entry level gun safes in another thread. I didn't want to hijack the thread, but wanted to get this info out there on them.

It is pretty easy to break into stitch welded boxes, or entry level safes with no door re-enforcements for that matter. You can beat open or pry open most of these safes while they are bolted to the floor. Some can actually be ripped out of floors pretty easily by rocking them if it is just through bolted to wood. Here are a couple beat open, pried, and dropped Winchester, Remington, and Heritage safe pictures below. All these safes were breached.

The fire protectiuon in cheap safes (under 60 minutes) is also not enough to actually survive a total involved house fire. Another key is, safes rated 60 minutes or above, but with tack welded bodies will never actually make 60 minutes if they are tested.

Remeber "Cheap", and "Good Safe" cant exist in the same sentence.

Thanks for starting this and posting these pics. Thats pretty interesting. Compelling photos for sure. What have you found are good brands from a security standpoint and what price range are the safes where you start to become more confident in their security?

BTW - where did you get these photos? Are they from personal experience, like job related or something? Looks like the top safe was just beat at the welds and pried open! :yike:!

Liberty safes any good?    Got mine hidden to boot... figure they have to find it first
Hoping most burglars won't hassle with a safe and find someone who doesn't have one.

Old enough to know better.
Young enough to go for it.

those pics are worth 1,000 words.  :yike: I myself own a Sentry Safe, and got it just to have peace of mind that the kids wouldn't be able to get into it. After seeing those pics. Now I want something that I know is bullet proof.

They are from experience, some of that stuff I currently have in my showroom and in my warehouse. The top safe was beat at the welds and pried open. On both those winchesters with the open lids, they were both breached the same way with a small hand held sledge hammer.

Liberty makes a good product in the mid and upper price ranges. You can't really get something considered secure or with good fire protection with any brand until you get to about the $1,500.00 price point.
