Should I glass bed my rifle?
«

I have a rem model 70 short action 7mm-08. Was about a 1.5 minute of angle gun new, free floated the barrell, worked up some loads, now shoots about 1/2 minute of angle, which I'm happy with. However, it seems every summer I go to shoot the rifle to verify zero its off an inch or two. The rifle has a leupold vari-x ii on it, sent it in last year to have CDS dials put in so its had a recent "check-up", scope tracks well when changing elevation or windage, works great with cds dials, really don't think it is the scope. The recoil lug is bedded, and the epoxy has a small crack in it...think this could be causing the rifle to not hold its zero? Also it only seems to do this after being stored for the winter(indoors, consistant temp), usually shoot 5-6 times before season and its only off the initial time. Also, do you think glass bedding the stock could solve this issue, and can you recommend anyone on the west side to do this? I'm by no means a gunsmith, is glass bedding easy enough to do yourself with good results or best left to the pros? Whew, that was a mouthful...Thanks for the help

Is the stock wood?
It is easy enough to do yourself. You can see it done online. A lot of prep work is what I found. I have used the Accra-Glass kit ($26) before. I also like to use the plastic syringes for better measurements. Another compound I hear good things about is Devcon1, but I haven't found any yet.

my best guess is that your chasing rounds when sighting in...in other words, your shooting a warm gun, get your zero and are very happy. then you shoot the gun later with a clean oiled and cold or cooler barrel to check your zero and its off. for me and i have a 7mm-08, before i was aware of this, typically i would fire a cold shot right before the season, and my bullet would hit dead center or half inch high. but it was originally sighted in at 1.5 inch high, so in other words my cold shot was low usually.
next time ya shoot, fire a shot, and wait another ten minutes at least before firing another. i know it sucks, but it should take you about 20 to 25 minutes to fire your three shot group. see where that is, then adjust your scope..wait at least 20 minutes and see were your next shot goes.
now when the season arrives, your bullet is going to shoot the same as last at the range, in other words out of a dirty barrel, i always pop off at least one round just prior to the season. consistency is as important as accuracy.
just my own 2cents of course, good luck.

Your gun likes it dirty.
You can certainly glass bed your rifle and it will help. But not necessary.

Thank you for all the replies, I had considered the warm/dirty barrel theory, and that very possibly could be the issue...thanks for the suggestion. Judging by the positive replies looks like I will be bedding the rifle as well, should be a fun project.
