Your Pick Elk & Deer
« on: June 25, 2012, 05:45:08 PM »
Well in the past we have always hunted 342 for black powder elk & Twisp for Mule deer modern.

Since the elk season ends and the deer starts next day i am thinking about just staying around the elk area for the deer season. Now I have seen a few deer in 342 around the cow canyon area but not a lot.

So If you had your choice of units down there to camp the entire muzzy elk season and modern deer season, what unit would you pick??

We have people going down there to scout in August. Ive hunted,Bethel,Nile and Manashtash.

Manastash would probably be one of my last choices in the state to hunt deer in. There are a few good bucks around, but just a few. I stayed in Kittitas county for the first part of the season lat year but not the Manastash. I've never hunted the other units you mentioned so no advice there. I was out in the Manastash today scouting for elk and saw a few deer. To keep clockum happy I'll say I saw no elk. And add they don't exist in this county period.

The deer seem to be slowly coming back from the hair loss but they don't seem to be fully recovered yet. Just my opinion of course.

5000 plus feet for deer ! if you want a good buck . I'd say travel or at least head west after your elk hunt a few miles . We saw quite a few bucks in 342 while scouting for a good bull none got me to excited . So it depends on if you want a good camping trip with minimal effort or a chance at a stud buck ?

Legal deer is all we are looking for.  Thanks for the advice.
Last year I hunted 231 for deer as we always have. Never saw a legal buck and I hunted every day dawn to dark. So I am ready for a change. One of my buddy's drew a any deer tag close ;342.

I always see nice legal bucks in the 340 ........as long as the season is closed. but we usually get a couple in there during the season. no monsters usually but decent deer and some nice benchlegs.  and there really isn't as many people hunting especially compared to twisp  :twocents:

Last year in 231 I saw three hunters the whole season. The weather was 70 every day but one. On the last day I had a string of 21 does walk by me.

No bucks
We have gotten one or two bucks very year there until 2010 than it went south.

342 is good for me. there are good deer in there. you just have to find them. shot my deer in the southern part of 342 last season. I have seen more bucks in other units around here but shooting a nice 4 point just two miles from the house is hard to beat .

I would say work your but off if you want a decent buck in the 342. just stay out of the wenas during modern :twocents:. too many pumpkins.

Yeah my buddy emailed me last night he got a any deer tag good for GMU 330-362 & grayback, klititat. So last year everryone went home after elk except me, so thought instead of moving camp north just stay where I am after elk season. And hunt with him.

Thanks for replys.
