Idaho 2011
« on: June 22, 2012, 08:17:48 PM »
Getting ready to go up the trail in the Salmon unit last fall.  The red gelding has been a ranch horse in eastern WA, the bay mare was my daughter's reining/cutting horse.  This was her first time in the mtns after I spent the summer teaching her to be a pack horse.  They both did a super job on a steep trail.
And I think God must be a cowboy at heart
He made wide open spaces from the start
He made grass and trees and mountains and a horse to be a friend
And trails to lead ol' cowboys home again

That is a beautiful pack rig you have. Cutting horses are good to use in the mountains.

She's a really athletic horse I discovered.  She went through and over all the rocks both up and then back down and hardly missed a step.  I was surprised and pleased.  These two horses live together and spend their life cheek to cheek eating their way across the pasture.  The good thing about that is they work together really well.  If something scares the mare she just hugs up close to me and the gelding and I don't have to worry about her running away.  I've worked with horses in the past when I was packing that just ran off down the trail when spooked.  That makes for a really long day.  My gelding isn't herd bound thankfully and I can just ride him away all by himself.  She whinnies a little but doesn't make a big deal of it either.

Was her cutting horse??? :chuckle:

Thanks for the ammunition. We've got two prospects coming up and I think it's time their dad learned a new trade.
