WDFW seeks nominees for new
Puget Sound shrimp advisory committee

OLYMPIA - The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is seeking nominations for candidates to a new temporary citizen committee to advise the department and the Fish and Wildlife Commission on Puget Sound recreational shrimp fishing issues.

Those issues will likely include recreational harvest allocation, structuring sustainable fishing opportunities and designing fishing seasons, said Rich Childers, WDFW shellfish manager. Up to 10 individuals will be chosen for temporary appointments, which begin July 15.

"The Fish and Wildlife Commission recently decided to review and update the Puget Sound Shrimp Policy, which includes catch allocations for sport and commercial shrimp fisheries," Childers said. "That will be a major focus of discussion for the advisory group in the months ahead."

The appointments will expire when the Puget Sound Shrimp Policy review process is complete, most likely around the end of the year, he said.

Nominations should include the following information: Name, address, telephone number, email address of the nominee; specific experience; the marine area of Puget Sound where nominees harvest shrimp; the reasons why they are interested in being an advisor; their views on how an advisor should work with other advisory groups; and the methods they would use to relay information to regional constituents and to assist in productive communication with WDFW.

Nominations are due by 5 p.m., July 3, and may be mailed to: WDFW La Conner District Office, PO Box 1100, La Conner, WA 98257 Attn: Mark O’Toole. Nominations can also be emailed to mark.otoole@dfw.wa.gov

Nominees need not be affiliated with an organized group and any group or individual may submit a nomination. Appointees will be notified by July 10.

Nominees should be available for advisory committee meetings three to four times through the end of the year. Additional conference call meetings may also be held to discuss management issues.

For more information, contact Mark O’Toole at (360) 466-4345, ext. 241.
