Any info on a remington 74 auto 30-06?

My dad just recieved this gun and he was asking me if I knew anything bad about the gun or model. I've heard of one remington having problems with the trigger but I've look online and can't find out any bad things with this model. Do any of you guys know much about this gun? It is a model 74 semi auto in 30-06. Thanks for any input.

These guns are ok.. however, they are a nightmare once they start breaking down, or corroding in the gas tube/port... It will start jamming for no apparent reason... You would be better off selling it and picking up a 760 pump if you do not want a bolt action....
forgot one other thing.... they will ruin the receiver over time.. the bolt will just eat away at the receiver until it is not any good anymore..
Of course if it was free, then no worries.. lol..

I have had that model in 30/06 and liked it ok. It was no long range gun but it killed a few critters. I have a pump in .270 now and it is a shooter.

Thanks guys, I should have metioned that he said very few rounds have been fired through it. I will let him know what you guys have said, I'm glad it's not one of those remington guns that just fire anytime that was my main concern. Thanks again.

The model 74 must have replace the model 740. I have a 740 Woodsmaster .308 probable the very first model made in the 740. Looks just like the model 74. I have never had problems with it. It was passed down from my grandfather to my mother then me.

I am 43 and my grandfather gave it to my mom when she was pregnanat with me so I would say 50 or more years old. I think it was the first year it was made 1955.

My granddad had his in the 70's. I was just thinking about the rifle a couple weeks ago. My granddad really like it. It was kind of the the show piece around the campfire.
Nice rifle.

I have shot a few deer with it. Sits in the gun case. I got plenty of other guns to use.

Auto's are not known for accuracy.........beyond 200 yards, accuracy folks out west excpect....hence why Remingtons, 700 action is so popular out west..................if our hunting the westside go flipping nuts! It's what the gun was disigned for................why people think they need ,06 power, for close range buck busting, is beyond me.....ya I know about bear plugging.....still..

I agree. I think all the rest of us had were Rem 700's Win 70's and one guy had a Weatherby 300. I personally never liked it but.................... maybe people were just being respectful it was new to gramps.
For the life of me I can't remember what he shot before. On the Wet side I use a Rem 300 35.
