Camo

I don't have much in the way of good (as in technical = fast drying, performance fleece, merino wool etc.) camo clothing for the high hunt, but I do have a plethora of non-camo.  Seems from what I've read a typical high hunt shot is 100 - 200+ yard shots, and scouting from more than a 1/4" mile away or further in both regards is norm.  Add the required blaze and I'm inclined to think I don't need camo.  Especially if deer are color blind and the only thing camo does is break up your profile; which at 200+ yards is this really an issue? Obviously out of the clothing that I do have I'd stick with greens and tans...although my 80's fluorescent ski coat is the bomb and might be making a come back?!  Hate to spend the money if not entirely necessary...

The only real reason I have camo is because most technical hunting clothing is camo. I wear solids all the time while hunting, and unless you are a bow hunter, it shouldn't make much of a difference. Just stay away from cotton, especially denim.

A few years ago I switched from wearing camo in the high hunt to hiking type clothes that I bought from REI. I wear earth tones in green or brown but the clothes seem so much better than the camo I was wearing.

From what I understand, deer see colors around the violet end of the color spectrum.  They can see blues and also some yellows too.  Everything else is pretty much greys...  For a rifle hunter, I dont think it makes a bit of difference as long as you stay away from blue.   I wear the best technical gear I can afford in natural colors, green and brown..

They can also see any thing that Flouresces??  I was wearing one of those road worker vests with the Glow in the Dark bright yellow lines on it... damn elk had me pegged, not just looking in my direction, but ignoring 2 other hunters that were making noise, but wearing normal blaze orange, and giving me the evil eye....  I went back to a regular blaze orange jacket/hoodie/vest that very day.

Thanks all this is exactly the response(s) I was hoping for!  I have cotton camo BDU's and just hate the thought of bringing those out there if not necessary.

if you search high hunt threads and look at success pictures not many peole are wearing camo. heck i think ive even seen someone in some board shorts...

Wait....Does this mean my $200 dollar technical hunting pants in the latest digital break up along with my $90 shirt also in the latest digital breakup that I just bought are useless  . I tell you I think I've been vamboozeled (spelling) with all that advertising  . Plus one on REI and their gear in solids, it will save you an arm and a leg and is just as good especially if your rifle hunting. Just make sure to use camo face paint and you'll be golden.

Well said.  You don't need to spend extra on camo if you already have quality gear in solids.  However, when buying again, I'd recommend camo, because then you have it if you need it.

I've been moving away from the synthetic stuff for base layers.  Icebreaker, smart wool, kuiu, make nice stuff.  All pricey but they last a long time.  I use camo, but am not sure a good plaid wouldn't break up my outline just as well. 
I bow hunt so camo is probably a little more necessary than if you have the reach of a rifle.    (my first elk came within 4 feet).

deer can an while pick up your outline at those further distances..but mostly cuz they saw you move...i had a nice buck that i had been watching for the last three hours sudenly pick me up out of no where..i was 300 yards away with the sun to my back and i hadnt moved an inch..kinda makes that 6th sence thing seem kinda unfair

camo is just another thing that could make your hunt end with a kill..you def dont need it but it could help someday..esp that digi camo from sitka...
