I've got a Savage Model 10 20 inch barrel that's a 1000 yard shooter. You don't need these overpriced guns when a Savage will get it done. Who cares if it's fugly !!!!!

sako for the money , the 300wsm with 180 accubonds will be hard to beat for a one gun dude . for a lil less I like the t3s i have one that shoot well and hasn't had any issues ejecting shells?

Savage or Remington in a .308, you can almost buy ammo anywhere, it has almost the same performance as 30-06, and is a short action rather than a long action.

What are the advantages of short action over a long... are there any?

Yep weight.  Some will also say shorter bolt throw and stiffer action, but probably not anything most people would notice unless they are super serious shooters.

If one is concerned about weight, even 4-6 more pounds. Then they better lay of the twinkies, Ho-Ho's and Ding-Dongs! If  ones worried about the pack weight of a rifle, then maybe one should consider shooting smaller animals so there is not as much to pack out.

I disagree with this sentiment.

I bought my tikka due to it's light weight, accuracy guarantee and price point. The fact that it fit well was an added bonus, the oversize palm swell makes it confidence inspiring to shoot due to the very natural feeling grip.

I have heavy rifles and they spent the majority of the time slung on my shoulder, my tikka spends 99% of the time in my hands; much closer to my shoulder and much quicker to fire. The stock is ugly for sure but it fits the barreled action and me well, it's accuracy has been nothing short of stunning. I've never had a feed or ejection problem and I have never seen one, the magazine design is extremely simple and seems to function without fail. I even use the factory rings that everyone says (that doesn't own a tikka) won't work without issue.

I was dubious initially but after carrying and shooting mine I am sold on the t3's, mine shoots sissy ammo (factory bullets) into 3/8" groups; pretty tough to complain about that!

There ya go! That sissy factory ammo compliments that sissy rifle perfectly. :chuckle:Going without sox will save you a couple ounces.

Marlin 45/70 xlr......OH yeah, you are on a budget    Don't count out the 45/70 as a great west side gun.  It will take deer, bear and elk with no problem.  If you shop around you can find some used guide guns for fairly cheap.  I personally like the XLR as it has the longer barel and it is a 300 yard gun all day long with the leverevolution bullets.  It is a lever gun which you are familiar with beings that you have a 30-30.  Fast follow up shots and not alot of recoil either.   

Ah another Marlin fan...got an 1895 LTD III   Have you looked at the Happy Trigger kit from Wild West Guns in Anchorage?  I wont own a Marlin lever gun without one.
