Dog is killing birds
« on: July 10, 2012, 07:25:35 PM »
ok have a question for you guys.

I have a year old Catahoula Leopard, she is turning out to be a good dog (pet). But recently she is killing birds (wild ones) dunno how she is getting them I do know one was a baby the fell out of the nest but the other was a fairly decent size bluejay. She also loves to chase butterflies and bees. Any ideas on what to do?

Get her to go for Starlings and Eurasian Crested Doves and you've got a winner!  :chuckle:  :sry:

Seriously, I think she's just being a dog.  And with all the birds that are just getting big enough to leave the nest, there's a lot of stuff for the picking.
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

When Bernie Madoff did it, it's called a "Ponzi Scheme"
When Government does it, it's called "Social Security"

I think they call it prey drive.

well there lies a problem I am the one with the chickens  :chuckle: but seriously she leaves them pretty much alone. On a good note we don't have a mole problem anymore and she isn't much of a digger. Well thanks for the advise I wasn't thinking about prey drive.

HAHA---yeah she was pretty rough on them.  I got her broke of it though...all it took was some "therapy" in the coop with a collar on.

My little hound pup wiped a couple of mine out the other day... he'll be getting the same treatment.  Seems to work really well!!

I agree with the prey drive, if the dog wasn't killing something I'd be concerned, if it is used for hunting purposes that is. If it's not then it might be a problem but I wouldn't worry about it. Our house dog when I was young would kill all sorts of wild birds, I was just impressed that with how big she was she could catch them!

Our Setter always came home with newly fledged robins during the late spring and we chalked it up to a "bird" dog.  Never discouraged it.  Our Ruby does not hunt robins but lately since she has been fixed (hence put on weight)  we've cut back on her feed and she is so intent on mousing.
