best elk bugle for west side
« on: July 11, 2012, 11:04:06 AM »
What's everyone using for a bugle on the westside? If you jump back and for year to year and hunt east and west sides like me, do you use different bugles or just stick with one?

I really need to buy a bugle and start practicing. But every thing I know is rocky mountain elk.

I'm using Phelps Game Calls new bugle tube. :chuckle:
One bugle tube is all that is needed for either species.

Do you think a Rosie bull elk in the rut will know what a Rocky Mtn. Bull will sound like??  So those bulls that travel back and forth across the Cascade Range, will never answer each other???

Bull Elk:   Hey, that bugle sounds funny.. must be one of them west side boys... so am not gonna answer it..

By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Just use a tube and a mouth reed.
Technique varies a little but not much.

I use the Bugling bull game calls and have a lot of calling success.  I have been out with about 8 guys who each had their own favorite calls and I have always gotten more responses to my locator bugle then any others. I've let most of them call first & multiple times with no responses and then I let a locator bugle out and get an immediate response. Something about my call they love.  Mike

get a bugling bull diaphragm call like the allstar or raging bull and a grunt tube from elknut or bully bull grunt tube from bugling bull. learn how to use the diaphragm and before you know it you will be makeing cow calls and bull sounds.

Ok, now for my answer without the shameless plug.

Elk Calling = 90% operator / 10% call.  At least when it comes to bugle tubes.  Diaphragm selection and external reeds the call has more to do with the sound.

The big volume tubes (competition style like my tube, bully bull and elknut chuckler) will aid in volume and make a bad caller sound a little better and a good caller sound excellent.  Then there is the balance of backpressure and volume.  The proper backpressure will assist in working the diaphragm and getting the resonance out of the plastic tube.  Too big of an opening on either end and you will lose some, not big enough openings and it becomes difficult to get the high clear notes.

The smaller tubes are a lot nicer to pack all day, but do give up some volume and calling diversity.

I personally have had a good deal of success with the Primos Terminator.  I switch between the mouthpiece and and one of their triple read calls.  This combo has worked well all over the west side since 2001 for me. :twocents:
May that for which I prepare never come to pass.
