candlewood is the shiz. I have seen a few candlewood dogs and they are nothing short of impressive.

Worn is a member on this site.  It looks like he has a batch of yellows coming in September.  I have a chocolate from his bloodlines that I got last year.  Not unhappy with my pup so far.  Lots of drive and willing to learn.  Anyways, might want to contact him and give the dogs a look.

I'm looking for a pup myself, but as a broke recent college grad im not looking for AKC Certs. Have u come across any of these "backyard breeders" that are selling for less than $400?
I hunt for peace of mind.

Thanks Goldeneye!

I have a yellow litter due next month. I just got a call from a guy yesterday telling me how impressed he is with his pup from this same breeding. Amazing in the water, (loves to even swim under water). Also, super driven in the field, (won't even stop for a treat), but very mellow and laid back in the house. I'm sure he'd be happy to talk to anyone about his dog. He's an avid hunter and lives on a big orchard on the Columbia.

This will be a nice combination of my English male and a nicely bred field Lab.

Short answer No.
But I would say to you this.
Get the certs, the AKC limited, dew claws off, and at least some remote hunting in the back round.
Why? there are a lot of designer dogs out there. You might not get a lab , you might get a hookiehoodle.
AKC is at least a good chance you are getting a purebred.
Health certs or vet bills.
Dew claws easier as a pup than as a adult later.
Some hunting/ Peice of mind.
These  things are all kinda standard even with the once a year breeder on the farm.
I think the 400.00 dog days are past. You can find a lot of nice dogs if you do not care about color for $600-$650 .
Someone you trust maybe on this forum might do you better and cheaper.

Good luck if I run across anything I will let you know. Check back often.

if $400 was the absolute ceiling on how much I was willing/able to pay for a dog I would get one from the shelter or a rescue. at least that way all your vaccinations and first checkups should be taken care of and in some cases the animal will already be spayed or neutered.  the initial price tag of a pup is just  the tip of the financial iceberg.

in many cases AKC registered doesn't mean much, in the absolute worst case scenario it just means the breeder went to a little extra trouble to make sure the dogs were registered ect. some people are under the impression AKC registration is the promised mark of quality, thats like saying you must be the worlds greatest dad just because your T-shirt says so.

these days there are so many good labs from decent hunting stock I would be concentrate on health clearances first, hunting background second in smaller sized breeding operations.

Your welcome.  A hunting dog is a big commitment.  A person needs all the info he can get to make the right decision for himself.  If you end up with one of his pups, I'd love to hear updates as it grows.

Who knows, if you hunt public land we may eventually cross paths.  I venture up your way a few times each year to knock a few out of the air.

Yep I put a deposit down on the next litter due next month.
He is very user friendly.

I have been hunting out of my boat last couple years because the old dog couldn't go, might have to start hitting the fields again.
Watch for my avatar it's every where I hunt.
