Hornady 175gr RN
« on: July 23, 2012, 02:44:50 PM »
Any on game experience with this bullet?  I've got a load that I like, but it certainly pokes along (2284@12ft).  I feel comfortable shooting out to 200 yards with this rifle, but that is putting impact velocity @ about 1700fps.  Do you feel that this bullet will still expand on a soft-tissue only hit (I.E. no shoulder/rib bones)?

What is it a 30-30 or .300 Savage?

I think it would still expand at 200 yards.......... ???

If the RN in question is the same most use for lever guns then it should expand fine at lower velocities. The front end is exposed lead and will expand rapidly. If we're on the same page then you don't want that bullet pushing too fast on game anyway, you may end up with just a devastating bullet splash instead of controlled expansion.

I guess I wasn't specific enough.

Hornady 7mm 175 RN.
Rifle is a Ruger M77 (Tang safety) 7x57 Mauser.  Barrel was shortened to 20" by the previous owner.
Game would be deer/bear/elk

Used that bullet in my 7mm Rem Mag for deer up in the Northern MN, never had a splash and it plowed through deer even the long way.  My B in L loved them in his Mauser.  The bullet was designed for the 7x57, it's been around a long time.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Make mine a Minaska

Thanks, that makes me feel better.  Would still be happy to hear anyone else's experiences.
