Need help finding a good gunsmith
« on: July 15, 2012, 12:27:32 PM »
I am looking for a good gunsmith. Some stuff is beyond what I can do. I need a good shop I can trust and send my stuff to. I would love to hear some feedback.

I have a build I will be working up and need a knob installed and a brake added to the rifle.

Thanks...

Thanks for the leads!!!! I love to get feedback on stuff like this from people I can trust. That way my gun does not end up in some basement with a hack saw and wire feed welder :chuckle:

Hey bullblaster did you have the  Shrewd Precision brake put on? I tend to favor the gill style brakes over the ported brakes. If you did how do you like it?

Benchmark in Arlington for a local smith(360)652-2594

I also use Bryant Custom and McMillan, both have built rifles for me. When it comes to some of the best work I have had done, it would be Kampfeld Custom. Kampfelds work is flawless, especially his metal work.

I found the last set of bottom metal for this rifle in the country and told mcmillian I will be ordering there a5. They said they won't put the metal in the stock for me since they did not sell it to me :bash: They will inlet the stock and ship it to me but that is it! I am pretty sure I should be able to handle that. If I can't I will send it to whatever smith I have do the brake and the knob. I am wanting to do more of it myself but I want it done right. So if it needs some tweaking I will let someone else play with it.

Kampfeld is only taking small projects, most on remington actions only :bash:

I really thought that is who would be working on this gun. Then I READ HIS LIST.

http://www.kampfeldcustom.com/index_009.htm

Hard to find anyone that wants to work on anything but remington :bash:

For a bolt knob and a muzzle brake, I can't believe anyone is only willing to work remingtons. This sounds pretty fishy. What's so crazy about these that any good gunsmith wouldn't do the work? Is there something special I don't know about bolt handles and muzzle brakes? Just give them the bolt and barrel and tell them it's for a custom remington.  :dunno:  :chuckle:

Everything is kinda built off a 700 now days :bash: So all there tooling and programs and such are wrote for the Remington stuff. At least that is what I have come to think. A brake is easy and almost any smith can do them. It's find it all at one shop that I am having trouble with.

Sounds like you need to find a new smith that you can trust. That way he isn't stuck on remingtons.

Indeed!!! I want one with good feed back. If they are going to start choping and cutting on a rifle with a 1200-1500 value. I want to make sure they are a good shop :chuckle:
