Best Do it yourself Retriever Training Book.
« on: July 17, 2012, 03:39:43 PM »
ok now that I have money down on a unborn pup it is time to bone up on my training program.
So on my first dog I followed Game Dog by Wolters and it worked well for me.
But that was 13 years ago. I am re reading it ,but who thinks their is a better book out for the Hunter to train his own dog now?

Lets hear them. I have about 25 training books but all are old . Whats new? I am a fast reader. Give me you top picks.

I have both Gun Dog and Water Dog.  Some of its repeatative, but I love those books and I can only guess that Game Dog is as good as his other books.

IMO there are better resources available than gun dog or water dog.

I am all for reading, but sometimes a DVD is worth a thousand training books. total retriever training by mike lardy or the fowl dogs series are great ones to utilize.  the most important thing is to find a program that works best for you and stick to it.

yeah that
I followed Game dog to the letter and when problems came up I pulled out the other books for so loution to the problem I was having. Dogs are all different what works for one sometime may not work for another. i kept notes of training on my first dog and i have gone back and read them.
One area i had problems was she was fine in the blind with me when birds were coming in, but at a hunt test where you had to move up through all those screen blinds she would just go nuts waiting for her turn. By the time she got to the line she would have taken out a brick wall on the way to the bird. She was a sight and everyone who saw her go talked about it. Flat out hit the bird recover and scoop it up.
Guess I spent to much time getting her excited to retrieve.

Already came up with a plan to use cardboard blinds while training ts I don't repeat that problem.

tri-tronics Retriever Training by Jim And Phyllis Dobbs.  Do you have or plan to use an e-collar?  Not sure if this book is the best or easiest, but I did follow the chapter on the trained retrieve closely and it worked beautifully with my Lab.

Congrats.  Glad you were able to find a pup.  Didn't seem to take too long.  I also have a deposit down on a pup yet to be whelped.  I have a 3 yo male now so I'll soon have two Labs.  Gonna have my hands full.

Great well if you want to get a little trainingg group going let me know. Nice to have others throw bumpers for you. I am in Mount Vernon.

Well I sat down two days and looked at every web page i could find in the lab breeders list. Than I made a list of the ones that had dogs like I wanted, than I looked at puppy contracts and that knocked the list way down. Because I will not buy from a breeder with a intrusive puppy contract. Like you will never put the dog in a open bed truck. Well I dont own a open bed truck. But I still am not going to agree to that. Or How many people live in your home, what are their ages, where will the dog be when you are not at home? Give me a break. You have to feed it this food for the rst of its life? And oh ya my favorite, We will pick the pup for you and name it. Forget it.

A contract should cover the breeders ass and thats it. Not dictate what I can or can not do with a dog I paid good money for.

I've been reading "Training the Pointing Lab" by Julie Knutson for when my pup gets to come home. He'll by 8 weeks sept. 11th.

Try- The Labrador Shooting Dog by Mike Gould. It is my best reference for 3 generations of bird dogs.

I would second "The Labrador Shooting Dog" by Mike Gould. Great training as well as anecdotes! If you do end up purchasing this book, I will say that Mike has moved beyond "force fetch" training and the "power bar". Everything is done with a waist cord.
